‘Fashion is a really personal thing for me,’ says Ibiza designer Victoria Durrer Gasse, who was brought up between the white isle and England from the tender age of 11. ‘I love it, it’s a passion… more like a hobby.’
It’s a hobby with a heart, as the talented textiles queen works very closely with NGOs in Bali, Laos, Nepal and India to ensure money made from her creations always goes back to the women in the communities who helped produce the beautiful handiwork, from textile weaving, to traditional hand embroidery, appliqueing and more.
‘I’ve accumulated so many things while traveling,’ she tells us as we peruse her amazing design studio in the north of Ibiza. ‘It’s when I get home to my studio that the real inspiration comes – I’ll see everything on my shelves and start to think what will work or contrast with each other, what I can dye and customise…’
Thinking of herself as a ‘global designer’, Victoria takes traditional designs – such as a mogul jacket, a Chinese emperor’s gown or a dress from outer Mongolia – and puts a modern, Ibiza spin on them to make them wearable for westerners. ‘It’s very Frida Khalo gone to town!’ she laughs.
