Sometimes kitsch, often tongue-in-cheek and always with an element of elegance, Berlin-born, Ibiza-based photographer Maria Simon’s distinctive style fuses high glamour, pop culture and fast fashion. Inspired by movies and paintings from an early age, photography became the tool to give her stories visual form.
Maria – who is also an accomplished stylist – loves the contrast of architecture, beaches, nature, water and light in Ibiza. First arriving in 1992, she instantly knew the island was a place she could develop and further her creativity. Opting to assist photographers, experimenting and learning in their studios, it wasn’t long until she was shooting actors, models and catalogues.
Inspired by legendary photographers Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin and modern heroes such as Mert and Marcus, David LaChappelle and David Drebin, Maria developed a fresh, unique style fusing vivid colours, sensuality and a touch of humour. Think provocative, sharp, powerful and sophisticated.
Her versatility across all genres is appreciated by a range of international names including Elle, FHM, ASOS, AngelikaLondon, Natasha Collis, Rise Fashion, Dirty Pretty Things, Universal Music and Holland’s Next Top Model. But whether it’s a model, actor, mega star (the inimitable Lady GaGa and Damon Dash are among her famed clients) or real-life character in front of her lense, Maria’s easygoing nature instantly puts her subjects at ease, allowing her to capture their true essence.
Along with fashion, portraits and advertising campaigns, capturing candid wedding moments is Maria’s specialty. You won’t find stiff, posed portraits here, rather, observant moments, emotions and situations. Maria– who works between England, Germany and Spain - intuitively understands her clients’ visions, for picture perfect results.
