The motive is the moment
To accurately portray the colourful characters, clubs, nightlife and spectacular scenery of Ibiza in imagery requires a skill more difficult than meets the eye. On the island, there is one man renowned for such an eye - German photographer Frank Weyrauther, known amongst the clubbing fraternity by his professional moniker, as Phrank.
Rather than set up complicated shots, lighting and equipment, Phrank watches moments unfold before him. His ability to spot a great shot combined with a knack for being in the right place at the right time and an affinity with his subjects means he candidly captures the rapture of a crowded dance floor, camaraderie between glamorous dancers or the intensity of a laser light show and more.
Inspired by club imagery and reportage in UK music magazines such as Mixmag, while working as a graphic designer, Phrank originally began using a point and shoot camera to preserve his memories of nights spent in the early German techno clubs in 1992.
After an initial holiday in 1996, he relocated to Ibiza in 1998, smuggling small cameras into the clubs in the name of art and people watching, subsequently and ironically selling the photographs back to the clubs.
Fast forward 10 years and he is the trusted photographer of many famous club promoters including We Love… Sundays, La Troya, Cocoon, Ibiza Rocks and Manumission plus private villa parties and events, taking over a thousand photographs on his trusty Nikon each night for clients and media around the world.
Constantly striving for that new angle, subject and technique, Phrank - who is also the creative director for island publication Dub magazine - has truly seen it all and knows when to start snapping and when to use his finely tuned powers of discretion. Quite frankly, we’re pleased about that!
