Seeing pink elephants
When you spot bright pink elephants elegantly perched outside a gorgeous, white 17th century finca on the road to Santa Gertrudis, there’s no need to pinch yourself. You’ve simply arrived at the cornucopia of colour and style that is La Galeria Elefante.
The quirky yet chic concept store – dreamed up by Sharon Bar and Victoria Durrer Gasse – opened in 2010 combining furniture, homewares, antiques, fashion and art. Multiple rooms, cosy corners, alcoves, cabinets and giant Oriental armoires display a plethora of unique wares from all corners of the globe, catering to all tastes and budgets.
Pick through piles of brightly coloured bags; marvel at exquisite trinkets ranging from costume to elaborate fine jewellery or rifle through railings of Victoria’s unique customised clothing, then pick the perfect greeting card from the island’s very best selection.
Homewares range from sweetly illustrated kitchen towels and vibrant hand-stitched cushions to elaborate tea sets, tiny teddies, wacky hand painted metal animals, fine china and scented candles to the most elaborate armchairs, tables and deluxe rabbit-fur beanbags!
A back room houses a jaw-dropping collection of primitive African art, while other walls throughout the space are adorned with more light hearted art, like beautifully framed butterflies or mosaic elephants. Well, there had to be an elephant in the room somewhere!
