When the smoking ban in Spain officially came into force on January 2 this year (oh-so-conveniently the day after DC-10’s NYD party!), there were plenty of doubters who thought it would never work. After all there have been many other bans here that have had little success, and sometimes it seems absolutely everyone in Ibiza likes a puff, especially after a few mojitos! The good news (for our eyes, hair, lungs and leather clutches) is that the ban is now in full effect. It seems there’s hardly a place indoors you can smoke anywhere in the world these days!
Aside from Paris Fashion Week 2011, that is.
It wasn’t the celebrities in the front row lighting up (even they wouldn’t dare defy the French authorities), but the models themselves… and we’re not talking about some casual backstage chain smoking (that’s been outlawed for years) but actually live and direct on the catwalk!
The undisputed queen of fashion, Kate Moss (who we all know loves her ciggies) closed the Louis Vuitton show, puffing away on a cigarette as she strode down the runway. To rapturous applause I might add (it was a rare catwalk appearance for the supermodel) – she was s-m-o-k-i-n’ in more ways than one.
Any other year, this would have been the scandal of Fashion Week. However this year, Paris Fashion Week 2011 was not about the clothes one iota, in fact it seemed it was only about scandal and gossip! Without doubt the Main Scandal was the downfall of John Galliano at Dior, who was unceremoniously stripped of his title of creative director after allegedly making racist comments in a Paris bar. I say allegedly… except it’s all over You Tube, you be the judge!
Perhaps the smoking stunt was planned a long time ago, but I suspect it was probably to detract attention from Kate’s strong link with Galliano. Just one week earlier it had been reported he was to make her wedding dress, and last month, Moss gave a very rare interview about their friendship to a UK magazine, while promoting the latest Dior beauty products (of which she is the face, of course). Oops.
Whatever the reason, the other hot gossip from the week was whether Alexander McQueen’s new creative director Sarah Burton will be the chosen one to design the other (future) queen Kate, Miss Middleton’s wedding gown. Her collection was one of the stand-out shows of the event and was mysteriously titled ‘The Ice Queen and her Court’. Funnily enough, it featured lots of wedding gowns too. We’ll find out in just a few weeks… place your bets!
But back to the smoking ban. As with other countries, Spain is discovering that many other dubious odours previously masked by the horrible smell of cigarette smoke, are now becoming more prominent. Imagine: a crowded Ibiza nightclub in the middle of August…
So, Kate Moss, you may not be able to smoke indoors in Ibiza anymore, but let’s hope lots of people are wearing all those perfumes you’ve been ‘the face of’ in the past! And if you happen to have had yours swiped by customs on the flight over, you can always pop by reVOLVER and have a spritz of some luscious Comme des Garcons before you head out… it wouldn’t be the first time it’s happened! And if you like it… well, you know where we are the next day if you want to come back for more!
