Ibiza’s very best DJs speak out!

Main-Dance-Floor

As of yesterday, the Ibiza clubs are officially closed for summer 2010, but we can’t help but reflect back on the DJs and the music that gave us so many good times and pure moments of dance floor bliss. Over the course of the summer, White-Escapes caught up with some of the island’s most revered DJs, to talk about their music, the season and most importantly, their love of the white isle. See below for some of our favourite words of wisdom…

2010 DJ Awards at Ocean Drive Hotel and Pacha Ibiza: 28/09/10

Luciano: Leading the Pacha revival this summer, the Chilean Swiss DJ and Cadenza head honcho spills his secrets to a successful summer and talks about the importance of doing it for the people.

On Ibiza: ‘I think for me, as a Latin guy, it’s like my culture from South America. It’s the weather, the people and the vibe – Ibiza is a magic place. This is what always keeps me always coming back. And DJing of course!’

On summer: ‘It’s always a pleasure to start the season, but it’s a pleasure to end it. It’s hard work – it’s been 19 Sundays… and that’s a lot!’

On music: ‘I always try not to put too much importance to things like award but at the same time, it’s having recognition from people that also helps you in this industry. I do this for the people.’

DJ Sasha

Sasha: After experiencing a successful return to Ibiza weekly residencies with his Never Say Never beach parties at Ushuaia, the dance music icon talks us through his love for Ibiza

On Ibiza: ‘It’s a special place. You keep peeling off layers. The longer you come here, the more things you find. I’m always finding new restaurants and bars to go to. For such a small place, it’s buzzing – people bring a lot of energy to this island.’

On summer: ‘Musically, it’s the epicenter of dance music. I think it’s still relevant, if not more so, than it ever has been. It’s amazing, what you can absorb in just a few days here.’

On music: ‘The records that excite me the most are these unknown producers, they’re usually 19 years old, and you think, where’s this come from? Digital has definitely made it easier to discover new music but it’s made it harder to keep things exclusive to your own set.’

Tiesto - DJ Hero 2 launch at Aguas de Ibiza: 06/09/10

Tiesto: Having recently been immortalised in the all-new DJ Hero 2 game, the legendary Dutch DJ tells us what it’s like to be a role model and world’s number one DJ

On Ibiza: ‘The problem in Ibiza is I can never stay in. Last night I was supposed to have a dinner and some red wine, then go to bed, but I went out with Eric Prydz and Sebastian Ingrosso and we went to see Luciano and stayed up until six in the morning, it was amazing!’

On summer: ‘I’m here every Monday and every week there is a new crowd, every year there are people coming here for their first time, so I can always play differently. It’s here I develop my sound for the future.’

On music: ‘Last year I changed my sound, so I don’t play trance anymore, it’s now very eclectic, fresh and people really enjoy it. If you time everything well, the songs sound bigger and better, but my set is still very spontaneous – if it’s the same every night it just gets boring.’

carlcox SANDS

Carl Cox photographed by Ana Lui

Carl Cox: Closing the doors of his ninth consecutive season at Space, the king of techno talks us through his relationship with the super club and the many reasons he returns to the island each year

On Ibiza: ‘There’s nowhere else like it. I’ve been everywhere in the world and Ibiza has a really big heart and spirit. It’s a blessing to be able to go to these clubs and also feel so connected with the island – I don’t feel that in Tenerife, Magaluf or anywhere else. Ibiza is the only place.’

On summer: ‘It’s nice because it’s not just for people who want to go clubbing. You’re on the beach, everyone’s in bikinis and shorts, you’re feeling the sun and the music’s really nice…’

On music: ‘The music’s changing, but it’s pushing things forward. It’s nice to see how positive people are, about being here in Ibiza. I’ll tell you what I think is going to happen this year – it’s gonna go off!’

Roger Sanchez: 15 years after first discovering Ibiza, the American superstar DJ explains how he stays ahead of the game and gives us some insider Ibiza secret tips

On Ibiza: ‘From the first time I came to the island I fell in love with it. The natural part of the island really reminded me of my parents’ background (from the Dominican Republic). It’s got its own unique spirit.’

On summer: ‘I have a good, older VIP crowd who continue to follow me but the trick is, to change sonically and bring in a younger crowd to rejuvenate it and keep it going. ‘

On music: ‘I love what I do. Every year I change the look, the theme and the feel of Release Yourself, plus there are different sounds that emerge. I constantly allow myself to be influenced by up and coming DJs and producers and integrate with them.’

DJ E.A.S.E, Nightmares on Wax

DJ E.A.S.E. photographed by Gypsy Westwood

DJ E.A.S.E: Champion of the Ibiza urban scene, George Evelyn of Nightmares on Wax has mastered the art of creating intimate, ambient parties in Ibiza, and talks through the magic of the island

On Ibiza: ‘When we first talked about moving here, everyone thought it was because of the music and clubs, but it had nothing to do with that. I was moving here for quality of life and to make music in a different space. Now I don’t envisage being anywhere else.’

On summer: ‘Kumharas is the only sunset spot in Ibiza that’s still got the kind of magic that was there years ago. It’s got the hippy element, it’s rustic and we have to remind ourselves how amazing it is to play in front of a sunset each time!’

On music:
‘It’s definitely full of soul and I don’t think that soul is a genre of music – it’s a feeling you can get in any kind of music. I’ve gone full circle and I think the music I’m making now is the music I really want to make.’
