Introducing ‘Manscara’

Over the last couple of decades, male grooming has become quite the boom industry, proving it’s not only women who are passionate about appearance and self care. What began with a niche range of male skincare products created by savvy beauty brands in the 90s has expanded into every area of the previously female-oriented domain. Here in Ibiza, advanced eyelash extension technician – and self-confessed eyelash obsessive – Jayne Brami of Lash By Jayne has seen her clientele grow to include men in recent years, from shy guys looking for a subtle face enhancement to those looking for a total OTT transformation. Guy-lashes are for everyone.

Manscara, guy-liner, guy-lashes – whatever you call it, eyelash extensions for men are a natural evolution in the world of male grooming. Metrosexual, image-conscious and gender-fluid men all over the world are no longer keeping their beauty habits in the closet; after embracing skincare rituals, self-tanning, and indeed, fashion, following their sisters into the world of eyelash extensions makes perfect sense. As women have learned in recent years, investing in high quality eyelash extensions from a qualified professional like Lash By Jayne can completely enhance or transform your look, depending on what you’re going for, eliminating the need for mascara and giving you a bright-eyed look that can last for between four and eight weeks. It makes perfect sense for men to seek this convenience in their beauty regimes too.

“I can design eyelash looks to suit whatever anyone needs – male or female,” says Jayne. “I see so many transvestite or transgender people in Ibiza wearing strip eyelashes every day – eyelash extensions takes away all the time and hassle fiddling around with glue and you can look fabulous 24/7. Some guys wear mascara when they go out – for the same reasons as women, to draw attention to their eyes – and this way they don’t have to worry about smudging or washing it off when they get home. And there are some guys who, like many girls, just don’t feel confident with their appearance – eyelash extensions for extra thickness can give them a huge confidence boost.

What I do at Lash By Jayne is all about making people feel good.” Student and part-time make-up artist Leon Cairo [pictured] is one such guy in Ibiza, who says his experience with Lash By Jayne has been nothing short of life changing. “I wore mascara whenever I did my own make-up,” he explains. “But I don’t wear make-up every day because I like my skin to breathe. When I put on even just a little bit of mascara, without the rest of the make-up, I found it looked too heavy. I was drawn to the idea of lash extensions because they seemed like a practical solution to every day glamour while still being able to look natural.” This is where Jayne’s expertise comes into play: the artist takes the time to really understand what kind of effect and look her clients are after before starting the process.

“I’ll always ask about my clients’ day-to-day style, because their idea of ‘natural’ might be different to mine,” says the Lash By Jayne founder. “I ask them to send me photos of lashes that they like and then I look at the shape and size of their eyes, whether their lashes grow to the side or are naturally curly, and I ask that they listen to my advice before going ahead.” With over a decade of experience – not to mention 22 years of experience with having lash extensions herself – Jayne is a bona-fide expert when it comes to eye shape, lash length, width and style. “So many people think the cat eye look is what they want but really, in many cases, it’s better to do longer lashes in the middle of the eyes as cat eye can look droopy,” she explains, noting that on certain face shapes and sizes, biggest is not always best. “I’m always completely honest, and everyone who listens has said they prefer my style in the end.”

When it came to Leon, he was happy to leave himself in Jayne’s expertly trained hands. Jayne assessed the size of Leon’s face and decided 14mm extensions were needed for the desired result. “I wasn’t sure what to expect,” he says. “I went in prepared to let Jayne work her magic. She was so funny and charismatic from the moment I met her; she made the experience fun and relaxing. The actual process was super gentle, and felt almost therapeutic too.” After the experience, Leon was so in love with his new lashes he spent the night taking selfies and sending them through to Jayne, who could sense his genuine happiness with the results. “I’m in love with them!” he affirms. “I think Lash By Jayne did an amazing job and she really catered to my eye shape, opening up my eyes which made a massive difference. I definitely feel more confident. Now that I’ve done it, I would 100% do it again. In fact, I don’t think I can stop now!”

Seeing the satisfaction of clients like Leon is what keeps Jayne inspired. “He looks absolutely amazing,” she says. “People often have this perception of eyelash extensions – maybe they’ve seen jobs that weren’t done well in the UK – but most of my clients have such beautiful lashes people don’t even realize they’re fake. I try to make them look natural – they don’t have to be huge to be noticeable.” Using her own gorgeous lashes as an example where size doesn’t matter, Jayne explains that the size of your extension should be proportionate to your face. “My lashes are 11mm but I have a small face,” she explains. “Lash By Jayne clients often say ‘I want really long like you’ but they don’t realise that what looks long on me may not work for them. I met a girl from Tokyo this year who wanted 15mm lashes, but because of the naturally flat shape of her face, I suggested a different style. It just wasn’t going to look right.” Men and women of all ages in Ibiza – and indeed, those coming to Ibiza from all corners of the globe – look to Lash By Jayne for advice.

Her youngest client to date was 12 years old, and her most senior is 83. “Eyelash extensions can be adapted to anyone,” she says. “For older people, it’s such a blessing because they can’t easily see in the mirror anymore. I can give them a 7mm extension and they wake up every day looking amazing. That’s the smallest extension, which I can apply for extra volume or a natural, darker look. The longest is 16mm, which I would only apply on someone who had a larger face. With the Russian Volume lashes I use, we design with volume as well as length – 2D is super natural, 3D gives more volume, 4D takes it up a level and 12D Mega Volume does what it says on the tin!” Semi-permanent eyelash extensions are no longer the domain of the rich and famous, or models, actors and rockstars, thanks to artists like Jayne, who make the entire personalised process as relaxing as possible. As the old saying goes, the eyes are the window to the soul so it makes perfect sense for anyone to want to enhance them as much as possible. Man, woman, adult, teenager, senior citizen, gay, straight, don’t know, don’t care – the Lash By Jayne studio (in San Jordi, just a few minutes from the airport) is a safe space for one and all to make their lash fantasies a reality.

Aladdin’s Cave

There are some people in life for whom mundane simply isn’t enough. These people seek the magic in the ordinary; the rare in the everyday – they push beyond horizons when reality starts to feel like traipsing through sludge. Nicky Le Boedec-Lambley is very much from this ilk. Owner of Skandish, a chic Santa Gertrudis concept store that’s an ode to all things beautiful and stylish, the feeling to up sticks from the UK and move to Ibiza to start a fresh life was irresistible to her. “I’m a great believer in the idea that you only live once,” she says. “So we thought, you know what, let’s do it.”

To many, this may seem like a brave move, but Nicky has lived a life that’s threaded with the cultures of many places – from Japan where she was born, to Hong Kong and the UK, where she lived over the years, and Mallorca, where she spent sun-kissed and happy holidays with her family growing up. Drawing on those special memories, but wanting somewhere more intimate to lay roots, Ibiza seemed like a natural fit. “We wanted somewhere small so that in winter it felt more alive,” the Skandish founder explains. “We’ve been in Ibiza for over seven years now.”

Once settled on the white isle, Nicky started crossing off additional criteria, namely, fulfilling her desire for creativity. A potent presence throughout her life, she studied art foundation and textile design at university, and always displayed an uncanny ability to identify striking aesthetics. When looking for work in Ibiza, the next logical step was to combine all those talents. “People used to love the personal things I had in my home, and while that kind of creativity is very different to buying things for retail, I thought perhaps I could put that skill into a shop,” she says. “I knew I had an eye for nice things so I trusted in that.” And so, Skandish was born…

The store is an emporium dedicated to Nicky’s favourite international styles – one that has proven popular with the current Balearic aesthetic. “Essentially Skandish is a collection of all the things I love,” she explains. “But almost everything has a connection to that British or Scandinavian look. That’s what I connect with.” At the start, Nicky travelled extensively to cities like Copenhagen and Malmö, handpicking the items that she liked, but these days it’s more of an organic process based on the labels she’s discovered and knows she can rely on. That said, whenever she returns to London she can’t resist a day spent wandering the streets. “I love to see what’s new and contemporary, whether it’s clothes or furniture or art,” she adds. “I love shopping so there has to be an element of that!”

A slew of stylish designers sit alongside one another at Skandish, creating a treasure trove you can dive into with gusto. “It’s an Aladdin’s cave,” says Nicky. “People don’t really know where to start looking – because there’s a bit of everything, it can be hard to choose!” But as any avid shopper will attest, that’s a good position to find yourself in – whether you know exactly what you’re looking for, or if you came in for a browse and got caught off-guard and spoilt for choice. “The store is designed so that you can treat yourself,” she says. “But it’s also really great for gifts.”

When you consider the rich list of brands available at Skandish, it’s no surprise the store has become a clued-up islander’s go-to for presents. From the laid-back luxe of American Vintage clothing and the chic but affordable homewares of HK Living, to the all natural toiletries by Plum & Ashby and the handmade wooden brushes from Iris Hantverk, it’s easy to pop in for a birthday gift and leave laden with goodies (quite possibly for yourself). “My aim has always been to bring things to Ibiza that you couldn’t find here,” Nicky explains. “I hate online shopping myself so I thought why not bring the items here instead – and make them different and quirky.”

The pricing policy at Skandish is also a refreshing one for Ibiza. “I try to make sure I cater for everyone,” Nicky says. “I try to keep clothes around the 100€ mark, so that anyone can come in and spoil themselves.” In addition, there’s also a ‘nearly new’ section that’s full of rare finds – the idea being that customers can bring in their old or unworn garments and make a little money themselves, while also finding barely worn items a new home. “I love selling old stuff and recycling old furniture,” she says. “There’s a lovely a balance to it.”

Indeed, there’s a general feeling of cyclicality at Skandish, especially now that Nicky’s 19-year old daughter, Emily, has become more involved in the day to day running of the store. “She’s young and she’s got this amazing sense of style,” says Nicky. “Emily brings an element to the shop that I don’t have. It’s great to have her take on things – she wants to have her own fashion line one day, so it’s helpful for her to see the other side of the business.” Never one to sit back and be comfortable, Nicky is always working to improve the store, in the process offering people in Ibiza something new and different. “Life isn’t always easy” she admits. “But coming to work is always a pleasure, because I’m finally doing something I want to do.”

Making people happy

Thanks to social media and YouTube tutorials, hair and make-up styling tips are now available at the touch of a button. But when it comes to doing the job to an international standard, nothing can replace professional training and years of experience. Here in Ibiza, Louise Maxwell has both in abundance – and through her own creative agency, The Louise Maxwell Collective, she also connects her clients with other high-level professionals in the fashion, beauty and healing industries. Born in the UK, Louise has lived on the island since 2005, earning a reputation as the go-to stylist for visiting A-listers, international fashion brands and publications, as well as brides. Prior to relocating, she travelled the globe training other stylists for brands such as Toni & Guy, L’Oreal and Schwarzkopf and was twice winner of the British Hairdressing Awards. Today, her own kit leans towards a more conscious approach, embracing brands that are natural, organic, cruelty-free, sulphate-free and where possible, plastic-free.

“It’s not easy,” she says. “It takes time to find high-quality ethical products that perform consistently the way the big brands do. You have to question everything. Ideally, I’d love to use products that were all made organically in Ibiza – but we’re not there yet. So I do what I can, taking into account the industry I work in and the community I live in.” Developing this conscious approach has also seen Louise add professional holistic therapists to the Collective’s line-up of top hair stylists, make-up artists, yoga teachers and masseuses. “We have extremely high standards,” says Louise. “Creating the Collective was about bringing together people who are experts in their field. It’s not about finding people who can do a little bit of everything. These are dedicated specialists who work all around the globe with high-end fashion brands, international magazines and newspapers and celebrities.”

Recent editorial work by Louise and the Collective includes a cover shoot for Glamour NL, striking wedding looks in Beyond Bridal and forest location looks for Le Monde. Advertising campaigns include a chic beach shoot for luxury men’s sleep and loungewear label Derek Rose and styles for Ibiza-born fashion brand De La Vali, accessories brand Jerome Dreyfuss, and Pacha Kids. Luxury brand Loewe called on Louise’s services for its recent video work in Ibiza, and she was also commissioned to do the hair styling for a bohemian portrait of the acclaimed make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury, in addition to working with Los Angeles-based photographer Diana Gomez at Pikes.

With an eye for up-and-coming models and knowledge of all the island’s best (and most hidden) locations, Louise is also branching into the world of art direction and is available to advise on commercial or editorial photo shoots in Ibiza. “The end of the 2018 season and the lead-up to summer 2019 are ideal times for big brands, publications and agencies to visit for shoots,” she says. “The weather is perfect as it’s not too hot, all the best locations are free of people and traffic – and most importantly, the light is incredible.” For Louise personally, her work is all about making people happy. “I enjoy connecting with people and creating looks that bring out the best in them,” she explains. “That’s why I love doing this job – you make people feel good.”

Queen of lashes

With over ten years’ experience under her stylish belt, Ibiza’s undisputed queen of lashes, Jayne Brami – founder of Lash by Jayne and an Advanced Lash Artist, Trainer and Professional Deluxe Eyelash Extension manufacturer – is, as usual, one step ahead of the pack when it comes to offering the latest lash technologies in 2018. Working all year round in Ibiza, her summer season is already in full swing, with many of the fab flutters you see on Ibiza’s beaches, dance floors and VIP areas right now a testament to her skills. Having seen the lash industry evolve exponentially over the last decades, the desire to raise standards has always been important to Jayne – in fact, this was the catalyst that pushed her to develop her own five-star premium brand and range of cutting-edge products. Tired of working with heavy, clumsy lashes that created a less-than-natural look, Jayne engineered a new phase in lightweight lashes with Premium Velvet Lashes, in addition to developing the safest EU standard adhesive.

With no fear of heavy clumps weighing your lids down or destroying your natural lashes, these revolutionary new products, coupled with Jayne’s extensive industry experience mean you won’t just be sporting a longer lash, but also a longer lasting lash. As your natural lashes continue to shed as they should, around every six to eight weeks, regular top-ups (every three to four weeks) are recommended to keep your flutter looking full, fresh and fabulous. Jayne also stocks M2 Beaute – the ultimate brand for eyelash and eyebrow care – to support and enhance the natural lashes throughout the process. Jayne is not simply an industry professional, but also an artist and a forward thinker, when it comes to using and developing incredibly advanced techniques. Not content with offering her clients Individual Lash Extension and Russian Volume Eyelash Extensions – where between two and eight lashes are applied to each natural lash – this season sees Jayne offering the latest innovation in beauty; Russian Mega Volume Eyelash Extensions. Between eight and twelve lashes are applied to the individual lash to create a beautifully light, feather-like fan across the eye, creating a look that’s a naturally striking masterpiece and uniquely designed to suit each client’s eye shape.

Jayne’s expertise comes into force from the minute you step through the door of her bright San Jordi studio for a consultation. She considers your face shape, eye shape, natural lash placement, plus length and fullness of existing lashes before recommending the length, curl and volume of lash extensions needed, then the artist’s work begins. In addition to her studio, Jayne is also available for private call-outs to villas, boats and hotels, however the ultimate experience takes place in-house, where even the temperature and humidity are controlled to guarantee the best application. Some clients find the experience so relaxing, they’ve been known to take ‘lash naps’! At first thought, you may presume Jayne’s client list is all females, but you’d be mistaken. In fact, Jayne says she’s seen an increase in the number of male clients over the past year, often asking for subtle extensions and added volume to accent their existing lashes – a natural progression from manscara! Male, female, gay, straight – absolutely everyone is welcome at the Lash by Jayne studio all year round, which is ideal for residents who wish to keep a full flutter throughout the cooler months, and a great excuse for an off-season mini-break for those clients who live abroad. The studio’s convenient location – just minutes from the airport – make it the ideal pit-stop after picking up your luggage, so you can continue onto whatever Ibiza adventures await in style.

Conscious and chic

Curated by the phenomenally chic Marinela Cifteli of forward-thinking label kurru kurru, this is a one-stop shop for island fashionistas. The kurru kurru label is paving the way for sustainable fashion with its line of gorgeous, flowing sustainable dresses. Made from cruelty-free silk and printed with toxic-free inks the designs are inspired by the shapes and colours found in the natural world. Macro photographic images of amethyst stones swirl in a dance of pinks and purples while the bright blossoms of mimosa sit proudly against a black background.

The focus on conscious fashion doesn’t stop there. The über-cool men’s board shorts made by Rizo come in an array of prints and colours. Avid surfers and sailors, the founders of this London-based company wanted to find a more ‘soulful, sustainable and sartorial approach to men’s swimwear’. Their shorts are made from 100-percent recycled and recyclable fabric and are digitally printed with earth-friendly inks in small batches. They’ll also recycle your old shorts and give you a 20-percent discount on your next pair. A passion for supporting small, local designers forms the ethos of the Cotton Beach Club boutique. Local label Mia Ibiza delivers a range of easy to wear cotton dresses in sharp geometric shapes. These are the ultimate throw on and go choice for beach lovers across the island. Simple yet elegant they are gorgeously matched with the Mia Ibiza handmade totes sporting the label’s signature triangle motif.

Jewellery line Victoria Deny has a select collection within the boutique. The Italian designer’s pieces take their cues from the voluptuous shapes of nature. The gold and enamel Fragments Ring is highly covetable and sits elegantly on the finger showing just a teasing sliver of skin. The line’s delicate necklaces evoke primal designs in sophisticated finishes. Pieces from jewellery designers gbgh make a confident statement. Their striking Justine necklace is reminiscent of foaming waves running up the shoreline. Rendered in gold or black these pieces only require a simple dress and a pair of strappy heels, et voila! When the party calls for something a little more light-hearted, opt for the fab Swarovski encrusted earrings by Caprice Decadent Bohemian. Fun and bright these are the perfect embellishments to spice up a plain t-shirt and jeans look.

Keeping sun safe has never been easier with a limited edition hand-woven visor. Woven with palm leaves in Bali, the retro design has been given an update for the Ibiza scene. Coming in raw or black, you might as well get both and match them with any number of the beachy accessories on offer from palm tree embroidered espadrilles to beach totes and towels. Once you’ve finished your divine meal on the Cotton Beach Club terrace with that majestic 180-degree view across the Med there is no better way to cap off the day than a visit to the boutique. Gorgeously arranged and selectively curated there really is something for everyone. Pick up a unique Ibiza souvenir, gifts for loved ones and most all something for yourself.

Style and substance

Who wouldn’t trade polluted air, clogged up roads and hot, crowded transport for pine forests, stretches of fine golden sand and a sea breeze to gently cool your face as you wander along them? When Jeffrey Eli was offered the opportunity to leave London and return to the white isle for a second summer to manage the exclusive John Frieda Salon at Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, he didn’t have to think too hard about his decision. “I was out here managing the salon for two and a half months last year,” he explains. “But this time I’m back for the whole summer – six months in total.” Housed within the island’s most recent five-star offering on the shores of Talamanca, the salon is a high-end, luxury space where neutral walls are complemented by gold adornments and sleek, streamline chairs. Naturally, this is in perfect keeping with its setting and the demands of its glamorous, clued-up clientele.

In truth, that’s to be expected from any John Frieda salon. In a period spanning over two decades, it’s developed an illustrious reputation for having the most stunning salons and talented stylists in the world, with successful branches in both London and New York. John also has an intimate connection with the island – he’s had a home here for many years – so it’s no surprise that its reach eventually extended to our sun-blessed Balearic shores. “John Frieda has been going since the 70s,” says Jeffrey. “It’s a huge name on both sides of the Atlantic, and so it made total sense to open a space here on Ibiza, especially with a location like ours at Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay. There’s really no other salon on the island like it.” There’s no denying the salon possesses an air of chic cosmopolitanism, in look as well as vibe. But what also makes it stand out is the expertise showcased by its team of highly-trained stylists, who go through years of rigorous training before they’re allowed to fly the nest to the salon floor. “I’ve been working for the company for five years,” explains Jeffrey. “I trained with them and I’ve grown up with them, and of course, learnt much along the way.”

For Jeffrey, it was perhaps inevitable that he’d move into the world of hair. As a child, he’d frequently plait his sister’s hair, and his mother had an affinity for the trade, despite it not being her career. But he’s also chosen this path because he gets a genuine buzz from making clients feel good about themselves. “My favourite thing about the job is that I get to be creative while making people happy,” he explains. “Someone can be going through a lot in their life and you and just by doing their hair you can lift them up and make them feel so much better. It’s so satisfying.” It goes without saying that a simple haircut is an extremely simple but powerful thing – we’ve all felt the benefits of having a transformative new ‘do, but it’s good to know that the team at John Frieda are powered by that same motive, while also have the high-level competence to back it up. “We have a lot of stylists who do session work and have celebrity clients,” says Jeffrey. “This gives them a lot of inspiration which they then bring back to the salon floor. We’re really encouraged to unleash our creativity, and we’re all inspired by each other’s work, as well as current trends.”

This summer, the London-based team are on rotation at the Ibiza branch – stylists and colourists among them. Pop in for a colour refresh, have your hair braided before hitting the clubs, spruce up your style, or go for Jeffrey’s signature blow dry. “I like to create a beachy, wavy look,” he says. “A lot of people use tongs but I like to use a brush because it minimises the intensity of the heat and it tends to last longer. A lot of people are fascinated by my method!” That’s the difference at a John Frieda Salon. You’ve got staff who really know their stuff, who are willing to go out of their way to make you feel special and pampered, while simultaneously showing off world-class skills. And here’s a tip if you’ve suffered at the hands of sun, sea and chlorine – their range of treatments is designed to enhance damaged, dry hair. Good to know when you’re living life on an island. “Wave my wand and I can do anything!” laughs Jeffrey. Precisely the kind of magic we’re looking for when it comes to hair.

Advanced eyelash extension artist

From soft, flirty and fluttery for natural-looking brides to voluminous and sultry for seductresses and party princesses, Jayne designs the look you desire, then applies it in the comfort of her relaxed private studio in San Jordi, with utmost precision thanks to years of experience, natural artistry and ongoing training. Always staying one step ahead of the curve and exploring new techniques and products as they develop, Jayne offers her very own 5-star premium branded range of eyelashes for fellow professionals, along with deluxe European-made eyelash adhesive. And for those who would like to stimulate natural eyelash growth between appointments, there’s Lash By Jayne Lash Maximiser, a unique eyelash and eyebrow enhancing serum, with conditioning, moisturising and strengthening ingredients that work naturally to improve overall appearance of the lashes and brows.

As global trends in eyelash extensions gravitate away from length to a more voluminous look, professional techniques and lashes are developing to accommodate.  The high-demand Russian Volume lashes are super lightweight and soft individual lashes that can be applied, with an expertly trained precision hand, directly onto the natural lash, creating a more personalised look based on your own eye shape, and desired appearance. By creating her own range of feather soft lashes and using these latest techniques, Jayne is able to build on the existing natural lash and add up to two, six, or even 16 more lashes – that’s per individual lash – in a fan shape for a full and fluffy voluptuous lash, whilst using much less adhesive than was previously possible. Forget 3D ladies – it’s all about upgrading and enhancing to the D that suits you (hello 16D – va va voom!) to create an even more sultry eye with a much safer finish.

For Jayne, teaching and developing her own range of lashes was a natural extension of her business. Over time, her clients – who hail from all over the globe, not just Ibiza – would ask her to train their local technicians and buy her premium range of products, so they could achieve high-quality top ups in between Ibiza visits and Jayne happily complied – after all, she was helping to raise industry standards. Then, during a recent visit to one of the world’s premier beauty trade shows, Jayne worked alongside global experts in eyelash extension adhesive to develop a high quality, European-made and naturally safe glue product as part of her range too – all now available on the Lash By Jayne website. Non-professionals too, can stock up via her website with the new Lash By Jayne Lash Maximiser perfect for taking care of lashes in between appointments or simply for making the most of what nature has already blessed you with. A lavish serum designed to condition and moisturise your lashes, the rich ingredients synergistically work together to enhance and even strengthen your natural lash, for an improved appearance with no side effects on the eyes. Within a matter of weeks, lashes seem longer, fuller and can be noticeably softer, as a result of the luxurious treatment.

Of course, nothing beats a consultation with the self-confessed, lash-obsessed expert herself and for a consultation with Jayne in person throughout summer, prior appointments are a must. Her studio in San Jordi is the ideal place to lie back and have your peepers perfected, and the results are testament to her reputation as Ibiza’s number one lash extension artist. Having recently attended an international lash conference and received new certifications on top of her ten years of experience, with Lash By Jayne, you’re in the very best of highly skilled hands.

Next level lash affair

Jayne is ready to perfect your peepers with a revolutionary new technique that promises an ultra-lush line of fluffy, soft lashes plus she uses her brand new product line created and designed by the lash aficionado herself. With the festive season, winter weddings and New Year’s Eve upon us – it’s the perfect time to ramp up those lashes with some extension love. Since 2009 Jayne has used high-end One-by-One Semi-Permanent Lash Extensions to achieve spectacular results, removing the need for falsies and mascara altogether, yet felt certain client’s lash potential were limited due to the number of natural lashes present. After all, you can only work with what you’ve got right? Wrong. Introducing Russian Volume Eyelash Extensions, an innovative technique that allows up to eight individual feather-light lashes to be applied to one natural lash.

Ideal for women with sparse lash lines, or for the true lash addict that craves super volume – the expert finish is a much softer, precise and multidimensional look, perfect for the everyday or special events and occasions. The application can take up to one and a half hours, and your look is completely customisable. With Russian Volume Eyelash Extensions, you can choose a specific curl, length or how voluminous or natural you want the look to be – or you can leave it up to expert Jayne and her nine years of professional experience to create a totally bespoke look, individual to you. Another bonus to this all new lash system is their tremendously light weight, one set is known to last much longer than the classic style, with touch ups recommended once a month. To add to Jayne’s repertoire is her new line of five-star professional products, available online and to lash artists worldwide. After nine years in the business, Jayne felt the products available around her did not reach her high standard of quality and set out to design her own.

Today she produces her own range of deluxe lashes, EU certified adhesive and accessories. Features of the collection include the Premium Velvet Russian Lashes where up to eight lashes are equal to or lighter than one semi-permanent in weight and are oh-so-luxuriously soft. Her specially designed adhesive is FDA approved, professional grade and produced in the EU plus her new oil free Lash Maximiser is perfect to promote the appearance of beautiful lashes naturally. By using the serum along the lash line daily, the potent blend of unique ingredients condition, moisturise and strengthen resulting in longer, darker, and fuller lashes in just two weeks. And that’s not all! The advanced lash artist and product manufacturer is now offering one on one training courses to learn the basic and advanced skills of individual semi-permanent lashes and Russian Volume Lashes to those interested in getting into the industry or for those wishing to advance their technique. Jayne resides on the island year round and is available to perfect your lashes out of her San Jordi studio.

Look who popped up at Cala Bonita!

Which is why, when we decided to open our very own little White Ibiza Pop-Up Boutique in 2016, we made sure we could run it for the duration of an entire month to avoid any serious cases of pop-up FOMO. I LOVE our little pop-up. It’s like my dream walk-in wardrobe – that is, if I was lucky enough to live on such a beautiful beachfront location as Cala Bonita! The gorgeous little beach restaurant has been a hit in its debut season on the iconic little beach of S’Estanyol, after giving the tired old restaurant a rustic-yet-sophisticated makeover. The attention to detail is amazing, with most of the furniture and finishes hand-made for the venue and the most high-end kitchen equipment flown in from around the world. Talk about raising the bar…

I have to admit, at first I was scared Cala Bonita might over-commercialise my favourite little ‘secret’ Ibiza beach – with Aussie celeb chef Karen Martini at the helm of the kitchen, it was only a matter of time until its gastronomic reputation grew – but the group of new owners truly appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of their location and are not about to spoil a thing. It’s not about numbers – it’s about quality. The intimate space is never overcrowded, the tiny beach always has enough space for everyone and locals still love to sunbathe on the rooftops of the fishermen’s huts around the bay. It’s perhaps now even more special than it ever was before – and let me tell you, the musical selection has certainly improved tenfold!

Anyway, I digress. I was talking about our pop-up. Our lovely little pop-up shop. It’s not flashy or overwhelming. Just like Cala Bonita itself, it’s intimate and chic, understated but high quality. There’s no pressure to make fast decisions as you’re surrounded by hordes of people. It’s laidback retail therapy in true Ibiza style. Have lunch, pick up a copy of WHITE Ibiza Magazine to peruse as you laze on the beach then come back pick up your favourite pieces from our SS16 collection on the way out (well, at least before 6pm as that’s when we pack up for the day!). We’re not going anywhere – we’re here all month! What I really love about the pop-up – location aside – is that finally, the beautiful White Ibiza Balearic Basics and Resort SS16 collections (plus our beautiful debut magazine) have a physical home. A place to try before you buy.

Because I’m going to admit – despite spending a huge part of my life working/socialising/obsessing in the online arena – I am not a very confident online shopper. I like to touch things. Feel the fabric. See myself wearing it in front of the mirror. Compare and contrast colours. Open my wallet, pay with cash and receive a lovely bag with tissue wrapped clothing to strut home with. Call me old fashioned… So at Cala Bonita, I’ve been able to try on each and every piece from the collection – much to the amusement of our lovely staff – and admire or criticise myself in the mirror. In case you’re wondering why I’d never tried them on before (they have been available online all summer, after all), it’s because I work from home and the collections are stocked at White Ibiza HQ. It’s summer, I’m busy and I hadn’t had the chance to faff around in a styling session… ‘til now!

My personal favourites include the Cavallet Maxi – I love, love LOVE this dress! It’s so Ibiza, but can also be worn in the city or to a festival. With wedges or with ankle boots. I envisioned myself floating through Dalt Vila in the white version (see my previous blog about Ibiza fashion fantasies here) however once I tried it on, it was obvious my complexion was much more suited to the black one. Black dress plus fluffy white cat does not equate to a logical purchase, but whoever said fashion was logical? It’s now hanging in my wardrobe, safely away from aforementioned kitty. I was also a sucker for the Caleta Kaftan. To be honest on the rails it looks kind of shapeless and I’d have thought twice about trying it on, but since I had a little time on my hands and it was in the name of research, I gave it a go. And once you throw it on… wow! It accentuates curves, shows off just the right amount of leg and sparkles beautifully in the sunlight. It also works well as a party dress – I know, because I instantly bought it and wore it to DJ Harvey at Pikes at Ibiza Rocks House!

The Xuclar Sundress – which I was convinced would not flatter my figure – turned out to be a great little dress I now wear for work and also out for lunches! I am yet to buy, desperately want, the Xarraca Maxi – the only thing stopping me is the combination of my pallor and its white shade. But I figure I still have all of September to work on my tan, so I’ll wait a few more weeks and try it on again before we shut up shop at the end of the season. Other pieces that surprised me were the Galera Gowns. I thought they looked a little too glam for me, but surprisingly, with some nice flat sandals, both colours look great for daywear as much as for night. The sassy little Pada Playsuits – which I thought for sure would make me look enormous – were actually easily adjusted to suit how much thigh you want to show (though I must admit personally, I need more of a tan for those) and really comfy to wear. And finally, the Carbo Kaftan… another winner, and another piece that works equally as well by night as it does by day. I still can’t decide between blue and black… maybe I’ll get both!

Whether like me, you’ve spent a couple of months ogling the collections online but were never brave enough to buy, or if you’ve never seen them before but feel inspired to update your wardrobe, the White Ibiza Pop-Up Boutique is now at your service! Combine it with a luxe lunch at Cala Bonita, a lazy sunbathing session on the rocks, or just pop in for a fast fashion fix. S’Estanyol is just a ten-minute drive from Ibiza town, there’s plenty of easy parking just outside making it much easier than trying to battle the traffic and parking of Ibiza town at this time of year. In fact, I think I might just pop in now to see if my tan has improved and my Xarraca Maxi wishful purchase can come true, and if not, there’s a Tarida Tunic calling my name…

Balearic beauty – Jessie May Young

Her youthful looks plus the amazingly close bond she has with each child makes them appear to be best friends as much as family. Family values are extremely important to the British-born hair and make-up artist, who first came to the island at the age of 17 with a group of girlfriends. Not long after, she met and fell in love with husband Luke and the couple continued to visit the white isle for weekends away, summer holidays and special occasions over the years. “It’s always been our special place,” she explains, with their 2012 nuptials as the icing on the cake. Soon after, the family were looking to escape the hectic London life to spend more time together. The choice was quite obvious really. “We came to check out the schools, then brought the kids over for a holiday in October,” Jessie says of the decision to relocate. “At the end of the week everyone had a piece of paper and had to make a tick or a cross. We got four ticks – Albie was little so he didn’t really understand – so it was a real family decision. Everyone had to want to do it or we wouldn’t do it at all.” Today, the family are living the Ibiza dream. “The kids are outside from the moment they wake up. Everyone’s so happy.” Daily life for Jessie is predominantly about family – from busy mornings getting ready before the school run, followed by managing her hair and make-up business, launching a new collaboration and pop-up with Net-A-Porter, working on shoots, styling Ibiza brides or creating content for her new blog, Bohemian Bond – a title that sums up Jessie and her family in a nutshell. “The blog kind of came about by accident,” says Jessie, who has been a hair and make-up artist all her adult life. “The first six months here were a whirlwind – finding a place to live, organising the kids in school, with activities, making big lifestyle changes. Then all of a sudden I realised I needed to do something for myself too.” Feeling a little bit rusty on the make-up brushes after a few months away from the job, she decided to do some test shoots on newfound island friends – who all happened to be working mums – to showcase her work. The theme was obvious, and the blog was born. Jessie describes her own natural boho style as quite relaxed, never too overdone and usually thrown together in ten minutes, depending on her mood of the day. “I feel like I can be more me here in Ibiza,” she says. “You can wear a maxi dress and have a bikini underneath on the school run – no one looks at you thinking, ‘what has she come as today?’” She admits to also being a control freak when it comes to styling her family.

“I’ve realised I dress them like us!” she laughs. “The girls are always in a lot of black, a lot of lace, a lot of crochet – though lately Maisie’s been developing her own style so I’m going to have to let her go soon. And even Albie, I dress him in my husband’s style. When I’m away, I’ll call Luke in a panic asking what they’re wearing!” In the afternoons, both parents are on the school run, ferrying the kids back and forth from their respective activities before they all reunite at 6pm for dinner at home. “That’s one of the only things I’ve kept from London life,” she says, inspired by her own family’s traditions. “I like us to sit down together as a family and have one big meal together! We talk about the best and worst parts of the day, everyone gets to have their opinions on how to handle things, and the kids can really open up to us.” For family lunches, they’ll frequent laidback places like La Paloma, Jockey Club and Babylon Beach and sunsets are a favourite activity, with Experimental Beach Ibiza the location of choice. “I’m obsessed with sunsets, and I’ve passed that onto the kids too,” Jessie says. “Even in the winter we’ll still go and watch sunset, with a blanket and hot chocolate. The next thing we want to do is watch is a sunrise.” Beach days too allow for more quality time together. “We love Aguas Blancas,” Jessie says. “The chiringuito there is so chilled and we can all happily do our own thing, but still be together. Albie will be surfing, Maisie can be rock climbing and Betsy thinks she’s a mermaid!” With a well-thumbed book presenting the island’s 80 beaches, the family are also making it their mission to explore each and every one. Time spent together as a family is obviously cherished, but Jessie and Luke also understand the importance of nurturing each child’s individuality. “We let the kids choose things once a month they’d like to do with us,” Jessie says. “With Maisie we’ve had a ‘date night’ at Bambuddha with mocktails, Albie chose fishing at Talamanca and Betsy and I explored Dalt Vila with backpacks, hot chocolate and her camera.” For Jessie and Luke as a couple, alone time is more about setting aside time for ‘date day’ rather than ‘date night’. “At least once a week, we’ll go to Atzaro for a spa day or just to read books or we’ll have a nice beach day. Though when we can go for a night out, we enjoy dinner and drinks with friends or the cinema night at Amante!” “Our original plan was to stay here for 18 months,” says Jessie, when asked if the island felt like a permanent home now. “But I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re still here in 10 years saying, ‘Oh we’re not staying, it’s just an adventure’. We’ll see what happens – right now, it’s all about making memories.” Photography by Sofia Gomez Fonzo Hair & make-up by Jessie May Young
