The big one
Privilege, Ibiza, Spain
The world’s largest club - and that’s official, according to the Guinness Book Of World Records no less - Privilege promises to give clubbers an experience like no other, and oh-boy does it deliver.
Like a space station lighting up the hillside outside San Rafael, the club, with a 10,000 capacity, is an amazing site – even before you get inside.
As soon as you enter its sheer scale becomes apparent. The club’s vast main room, with 25m high ceilings, has a large swimming pool and towering DJ plinth. There are a further two rooms off to the right: the Coco Loco zone and the infamous back room.
Boasting 14 bars scattered around the venue, two exclusive VIP zones on the upper levels and even a DJ in the bathrooms, you can only escape the party atmosphere in the cavernous open-air chill out room, complete with huge metal-framed dome.
The club started out as a simple community swimming pool, but by the ‘80s was the European Studio 54, attracting a hedonistic crowds and no shortage of celebrities. Freddie Mercury famously sang Barcelona with Montserrat Caballè, and Grace Jones danced naked in the rain during a thunderstorm.
This year Mauro Picotto’s Meganite is back every Wednesday. Celebrating its fifth year on the island it looks set to be just as popular as ever. New kid on the block, SuperMartXè – a hybrid of two successful parties in Madrid – on every Friday, is tipped to be a winner for 2008, as is Tiësto’s juggernaut, In Search of Sunrise, on every Monday. Underground island favourite Monza returns to reign over Thursdays and Alex Gold’s extravaganza takes over the ever competitive Sunday night slot.
Sometimes big is best.
