Music Against Animal Cruelty

We CAN make a difference! When you look at the photo above, it’s hard to imagine any association with say… lions and tigers and bears (oh my!). Or rhinos, elephants, great apes and orang-utans. And yet tomorrow – Thursday September 13, 2018 – that exact same open-air stage is going to be the location of an amazing wildlife conservation fundraising event. The first event of its kind in Ibiza, MAAC (Music Against Animal Cruelty) presents WILD at Ushuaïa Ibiza, where ALL profits go towards wildlife conservation. ALL. Not 5%, not 25%, not just the spare change collected on the door or donations from VIP patrons. 100% OF ALL PROFITS. On top of that, all DJs – and there are some serious heavy hitters on that line-up – are performing for free, which equates to less expenses for the venue, more money for the animals. WINNING.

In case you didn’t know, MAAC is a non-profit organisation founded by Jonny White of Art Department, founder of Pulse Global Wade Cawood and founder of Tears for Tigers Jack Baucher. The three amigos shared a very common passion for animal conservation (you can read more about their journeys here) and see the foundation as something that can grow into a hugely important and influential movement. “This isn’t just techno against animal cruelty,” says Jonny White. “The bigger picture is garnering support of the music industry at large, the same way the industry has been successful in the past with initiatives like LIVE AID.” Who needs Bono when we’ve got these huge hearts at the helm?

The first event draws on the dance music sector, with MAAC ambassadors Adam Beyer, Art Department, Bedouin, DJ Sneak, Ida Engberg, Lauren Lane, Nitin and Tiga set to perform, plus very special guest Black Coffee and an unannounced major league guest who will be revealed on the day. You don’t need to be an activist, a conservationist, a campaigner or even a vegan to get involved. All you need to do is turn up and have a good time (just think – the more you drink, the more you are donating! Not that I’d promote irresponsible service of alcohol of course… but one for the road might not hurt) and you will be actively contributing to the greater good of the animal kingdom.

Now – if the epic line-up and thought of partying for a good cause isn’t quite enough to get you there, please let me share some un-fun facts I learned from MAAC that will tug on your heart strings and quite possibly bring you to tears. (And I should know – I cried my heart out when researching this blog.) 20% of the world’s seven to 15 million species could be gone in the next 30 years. Excuse my French, but WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK? This rate of extinction is unprecedented since the disappearance of dinosaurs 65 million years ago. And the major difference is… human beings are directly responsible for this. The trade in illegal wildlife is estimated to be worth over $15 billion USD per year. WE DID THIS. I mean, not you, and not me, but humans as a species. And I think only humans have the power to stop other humans from creating such shameful situations and circumstances.

Every single day, human beings create 3,500 lives. At the same time, every single day, we lose one or more entire species of animal or plant life. As a matter of fact, we lose 27,000 species per year. For anyone who wants to use the survival of the fittest argument… I dare you to go into the jungle and try to kill a tiger or an ape with your bare hands before you open your mouth. I doubt you’ll be last man (or woman) standing. But hey, at least you won’t argue anymore! I digress – back to the facts. 97% of the world’s wild tiger population has been destroyed in the last 100 years. That means only 3% are left. THREE PERCENT! 50% of African lions have disappeared in the last 25 years. 30,000 elephants are slaughtered per year for their ivory. 3,000 apes are being taken from the wild each year. 90% of the world’s rhinos have been killed in the last 40 years. Just this year, the world’s very last white rhino died in Kenya. And please don’t watch this video about orang-utans if you don’t want your heart to break.

Animals don’t have a voice. Animals don’t have money. Animals don’t possess weapons to fight against man-made bullets, spears, knives and machines. Animals cannot control the situations human beings put them in. But we can. We have voices – let’s use them. We have money – let’s donate it. Events like MAAC presents WILD at Ushuaïa Ibiza – these are our weapons. We’re fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves, in the easiest possible way we know how. All you have to do is dance. The idea of a world without lions and tigers and bears: oh my… GOD. It’s just unthinkable. Let’s join together and make sure it doesn’t ever become reality. Not on our watch.

Secret garden barbecue

There are occasions when we stumble upon a place so stunning that to the human eye, it appears almost otherworldly. Just like in Frances Hodgson Burnett’s children’s classic, The Secret Garden, you step over an invisible threshold and before you know it you’ve been transported to a whimsical wonderland – a place where time stands still, nature blossoms and thoughts are granted the space to wonder. Places like this are hard to come by, but once discovered, they’re refuges that stay with us forever.

In Ibiza, Es Cucons holds this status for many – a hidden haven on the west coast of the island. Here, magic blooms. A family-run hotel housed within a 17th century farmhouse, Es Cucons is its own little corner of unspoilt paradise. Located deep within a valley where almond trees flourish, and surrounded by majestic palms, fragrant lavender and bountiful flora, in summertime it comes alive to the tune of chirruping birds and buzzing insects, who float from plant to plant harvesting pollen. To make the most of the picturesque setting and fabulously laid-back atmosphere, this is also the time of year when culinary creativity reigns supreme at the venue.

“This year, we’re doing barbecues,” explains owner, Maria Rodriguez with a smile. “It’s a bit of a secret because you can’t just turn up; we don’t do it every week so you have to contact us to find out the dates.” That’s part of the mystique of an Es Cucons barbecue – it’s all about keeping your ear to the ground or contacting the hotel directly for information. And if it happens to be your lucky week, you’re rewarded with an alfresco feast fit for a king. Homemade gazpacho is there to greet you on arrival, alongside a buffet of homemade salads including creamy Burrata with fresh figs, quinoa and tabbouleh, all laid out on rustic wooden tables for you to help yourselves to.

Fairy lights are wrapped around tree trunks, chandelier-style bulbs bob romantically in the breeze, your name is chalked prettily onto blackboard and perched atop your table while gorgeously ambient music radiates from speakers, or on occasion, a live band. Then of course there’s the main course – a range of fresh meat and fish flame-grilled to succulent perfection on a colossal, drum-sized barbecue. “We do everything,” says Maria. “Choose from chicken, entrecote, pork or lamb chops, mengez sausage or whatever’s best in the market on the day. And the same for seafood – sometimes it’s calamari or jumbo prawns or dorada, but everything is cooked to order per table.” Don’t forget to save room for dessert, a traditional style Spanish pudding served with ice cream.

On weeks when the barbecue is rested, it’s replaced by a tapas fiesta celebrating all things culinarily Spanish, sometimes with a twist. Think homemade croquettes, patatas bravas, and padron peppers, as well as dishes like hummus and babaganoush for vegetarians. “We always have the best Spanish hams and amazing micuit duck,” adds Maria. “We source it locally from a farm where we know the ducks are well taken care of – we make sure everything here is made with love.” This ethos extends to all aspects of the catering at Es Cucons.

Available to guests and non-guests – as long as you reserve in advance – you can sample a slice of it at breakfast, lunch, or à la carte dinner. Breakfast is available from 8.30am to 11am, and includes a wide selection of Ibizan specialities as well as Iberian cuts, homemade cakes and pastries and hot meals, while the lunch and dinner menu is served between 1.30pm and 10pm. Popular dishes include the juicy gambas al ajillo, smoked sardines and lamb served with orange, all washed down with some of the finest wine available on the island.

Traditional Spanish paella is also available if ordered in advance – a professional chef from Valencia comes on site to prepare it especially for you – and as well as a range of favourites like pasta, grilled fish and salads, steps can also be taken to cater for gluten-free or a wide range dietary requirements. “We’re always thinking of our guests first,” says Maria. “We’re a hotel so we like to keep everyone happy.” And if it’s a special occasion, champagne is on the menu, so you can toast long into the blissful night. A spectacularly intimate setting enhanced only by the company of friends and family, Es Cucons is a venue that conjures wonder and admiration. “Sometimes since I’ve been in the garden I’ve looked up through the trees at the sky and I have had a strange feeling of being happy as if something were pushing and drawing in my chest and making me breathe fast,” said Colin in The Secret Garden. Expect much of the same at Es Cucons.

Things to do on a rainy day in Ibiza

While to the untrained eye (or uneducated visitor) storms may seem like a calamity, to the locals, the annual downpour is a welcome respite from the hectic pace of life; an excuse to go into semi-hibernation and exactly what our beloved island needs for a much-needed all-over cleanse and purification. However if staying holed up in a hotel isn’t your idea of a blissful Ibiza holiday, we’ve got some tips to help you make the most of an Ibiza rainy day. Umbrellas not included…

Shop till it stops: When the going gets wet, the wet go shopping… If it’s raining cats and dogs outside, but you’ve only packed the bare essentials for that sunny Ibiza autumn break promised in the brochure, you can rest assured Ibiza’s retailers are here to help from head to toe, having proudly unveiled their most recent collections recently. Switch your stilettos for sturdy-yet-sexy leather boots or a handmade one-of-a-kind leather bag by Ibiza Code then team your flirty summer dresses with staples like skinny, sassy jeans. Victoria Ibiza stocks an array of hand-dyed velvet jackets ideal for covering up in the cool, plus one-of-a-kind printed scarves well worth the trip to Santa Gertrudis. Tip – ask your hotel for an umbrella, because most of Ibiza town’s shopping ‘high street’ is not undercover. All the more reason to spend extra hours trying on new clothes!

Indulge in comfort food: Rain, hail or shine, not matter where you are in the world, you’ve got to eat! What you may not know is, although many of Ibiza’s restaurants are famous for being outdoors or on the seaside, they also boast intimate indoor settings for weather conditions just like these. Watch the waves hit Cala Jondal from the rustic interior of Yemanja, or tuck into a traditional roast at Pikes on a Sunday. For the ultimate in homely comfort, huddle by the fireplace at El Carnicero by night.

All-weather indulgences: Treat your mind, body and soul to a serious pampering session in one of Ibiza’s famous day spas – cosy, warm and tucked up in a big white fluffy robe, you’ll instantly forget the gloomy weather and relax the day away. From reviving massages and moisture-boosting facials to full body scrubs, wraps, manicures and pedicures, there’s nothing better than listening to the soothing sound of the rain to send you off to sleep while being pampered. We love taking shelter withinOpen Spa at Ibiza Gran Hotel.

Prep your home for hibernation: Those island locals getting ready for the chilly months ahead may find the rainy days perfect inspiration when it comes to giving your home a seasonal makeover. Warm, wooly throw rugs, thick fleecy blankets and plenty of cushions, lamps and candles are the quickest fix when it comes to revamping your interior for hibernation – just imagine those cosy nights in with a vino tinto and DVD! Whether you’ve got an apartment, finca or luxury villa (or for those off-season travelers who don’t mind paying excess baggage fees on the return trip!) make your way to the island’s best furniture and décor showrooms, Ibiza Interiors, Happinez Ibiza, La Vie Boheme and Es Cucons La Tienda to stockpile your winter warmers.

Hit the road: No, we don’t mean hightail it to the next ferry to Formentera… on the contrary! Just because it’s a little soggy outside doesn’t mean you can’t do a spot of sightseeing – in fact, the chance to checkout Ibiza ‘underwater’ is a pretty rare, so you may as well make the most of it. Wet weather lookouts include Sa Caleta, Cala Jondal, Cala Nova and Es Torrent for those who fancy seeing the local surfers (yes really!) in action and the lookout points of Es Mirador or Sa Talaia, where you can watch the haze settle over Es Vedra and Ibiza’s countryside. Ibiza car hire rental agencies offer all-terrain 4WD vehicles (specialising in Jeeps) perfect for the rainy conditions, so grab a map or GPS and above all, please drive safely!

Get bikini ready: It’s notoriously steamy in Ibiza after a storm has cleared, and once the burning sun has dried out the sand, the hotels have put the sunbeds back out by the pool you’ll be wanting to sunbathe in a flash. Ibiza locals have been known to sunbathe all the way up until Christmas (in the right secret, protected coves) So either before, after or in lieu of comfort eating, why not drop in to one of the island’s many yoga classes to ensure you’re looking fab, not flab, when it’s time to top up your tan? You’ll find the perfect yoga class to suit your style and level in the White Ibiza Yoga Class Calendar.

Research your next Ibiza holiday! Traveling with your laptop, iPhone or iPad? What better excuse than to stay in bed, order room service and let your fingers do the walking… on White Ibiza of course! Explore the best of Ibiza, from restaurants, bars and hotels to shops, spas and clubs… then read tales of blogger Miss W’s island escapades to get a real feel for island life! Even if you’re not on the island at least we can help you be here in spirit.

24 hours in Formentera – Cala Saona, Cap de Barbaria and Playa de Migjorn

Ibiza’s ‘little’ sister is indeed a small island, however she is brimming with things to do and places to see.  With everything in such close proximity, it’s easy to plan an itinerary that covers all bases from sightseeing and exploring to relaxation and dining. 9am – Breakfast

Start your day at one of the island’s newest trendy cafés: Mama Coco, perched on the cusp of Sant Francesc’s main street (leading to Cala Saona). 10.30am – Sightseeing

The lighthouse at Cap de Barbaria is an impressive sight in the early morning due to the beauty of its vast landscape – the vista extends all the way to the African coast. Its role in various films and commercials over the years has brought this stunning location to the attention to many sightseers, and today it is one of the most prominent attractions in Formentera. Located on the southernmost tip of the island, past Cala Saona via a long, scenic stretch of country road that leads you to an expansive rocky environment, its breath-taking views and peaceful atmosphere are a perfect match for its splendour. A new conservation-inspired rule has recently been enforced, meaning all cars must be parked at the entrance and the lighthouse is only accessible on foot, so be prepared for a 15-minute walk each way. The true wow factor hits when you finally arrive to see those panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the horizon, where it really does feel as if you have arrived at the end of the earth.

Afternoons in Formentera are the ideal time to reflect and cool off as the typical island breeze arrive in the later hours of the day. The covert cove of Cala Saona is a magical destination – paddle in the shallow turquoise waters that lead out to deep blue sea, protected by the sweeping wall of sandstone cliffs and authentic Formentera fishing shacks scattered on the rocks beneath. This beach has a very different feel to the rest of the beaches in Formentera – it evokes a sense of nostalgic for those returning and creates a treasured memory for first timers.

7pm – Sundowners

For a true taste of local life, Kiosko 62 is an alternative experience not to be missed, especially as the sunset hour creeps in. This weathered and character-filled wooden beach shack on the sandy rocks of Playa de Migjorn faces out to sea and is everything you expect from a Formentera beach bar. Slightly off the beaten track and not overly crowded, it offers affordable drinks, a no frills service and laid-back atmosphere – the perfect place to unwind. Is September the new August?

The light turns golden. It’s still summer by all means, but the heaviness and hectic-ness of August has dropped, like a weight off the island’s collective shoulders. At the same time, all of those islanders who seemed to drop off the face of the earth for the last four weeks start popping up again – solving what often seems like a giant missing persons report that spans the entire island. The nice thing about this is, you can finally see your friends as they (and you) start making regular appearances at parties again. You also start to see your colleagues, clients and associates again – which on one hand is great (long-overdue invoices finally get paid and emails get answered as some kind of organisational order is restored in the world of admin) and on the other, quite overwhelming. Because when absolutely everyone you know on a small island like Ibiza awakens from their August hibernation, work-aholism or party marathon (oh and let’s not forget those returning from Burning Man in a state of zen/flux/crossroads) at exactly the same time – chaos ensues!

We all need haircuts. We all need to go to the bank. We all take our pets for their check-ups. We even go to the doctor/masseuse/shaman ourselves. We all want to hit the beach. We all want to arrange or buy those things we were talking about back in July – today. We all need to catch up – be it for business or pleasure – and we need to do it like, yesterday. We all start posting to Instagram again. Some of us (those with way too much time on their hands) may even return to scrolling through Facebook! We all want to go to the final instalments of our favourite events (because in September, the line-ups are the best!), and of course, we all want guest list. We’ve got to catch that sunset, eat that steak, drink that George Michael inspired cocktail by the pool at Pikes, watch capoeira one more time (OK I was kidding on that last one). All of a sudden… WE’RE ALL EVERYWHERE. AND WE’RE ALLLLLLLL BUSY. The flurry of September re-acclimatisation seems to have made us busier than ever before. If I hear my email ping one more time this hour (PING! There it goes, right on cue – switching to silent mode) I will scream. If my phone flashes up with another of those relentless WhatsApp groups (you all know my feelings on this – if not, catch up here!) I might even cry. If my phone rings, I’m going to hurl it out the window (or alternatively, look on the bright side and quote Gretchen Weiner: ‘I can’t help it if I’m popular.’) If my to-do-list gets any longer I might just shut the front door, turn off all the lights and hide for the rest of the year. Or fake my own death, move to Mexico and live happily ever after on tacos and tequila.

OK, so I may be a little overly dramatic, but I must say, the intensity in which September arrived this year has kind of shocked me. A few years ago I remember writing about how September was busier than ever before and yet in hindsight, I think 2015 was a piece of cake. I know it’s not just me. Everyone I speak to – friends, clients, cats – all feel the same this season. The light at the end of the tunnel we used to associate with September is barely visible at all right now. So the question is… is September the new August?* *Because if it is, I am totally cool with it, I just want someone to confirm it for me so I can manage my own expectations appropriately and make plans for October!

Mediterranean purity

Everyone can conjure an azure-hued sky; and the majority can recall a turquoise-tipped wave, but after one day spent on-island, your definition of the world’s favourite colour is blown wide open. Because in fact, there are myriad versions of blue on this wind-blasted Balearic rock, and when you see it for the first time, your eyes can’t quite comprehend it. Take Atzaró Beach in Cala Nova, for example – this is a place brimming with beachside blues. Part of the esteemed Atzaró Group, Atzaró Beach is one of those rare Balearic gems that takes the raw magnificence of its setting and builds a stunning, contemporary space around it. Boasting spectacular sea views, charming white wooden furniture, and splashes of vibrant turquoise, not to mention quirky little touches like disused lobster cages, raffia parasols and ornamental fish that bump together in the breeze, it’s an authentically relaxed yet luxurious seaside space designed specifically with long, lazy lunches and laid-back, salt-kissed dinners in mind. There’s no doubt that this venue encompasses all the signature style you’ve come to love and expect from the Atzaró Group.

Situated on the island’s east coast, Cala Nova is a spot adored and adorned by locals. A long stretch of fine, golden sand, it’s the perfect location for sinking into a chair or daybed and really getting to grips with the slow, relaxed pace of Mediterranean summer life. And of course, there’s something at Atzaró Beach to keep everyone happy, every hour of every day. Here, they cater for all tastes and desires, so stop by for brunch, stay for lunch, and then don’t be surprised if it segues into a magical, starlit dinner. In keeping with the beach club’s authentic yet deluxe appeal, the Mediterranean menu is inspired by fresh, delicious ingredients, sourced locally wherever possible, and each ingredient is treated like royalty before finding its way to the plate. If you’re spending the afternoon on a decadent daybed, tuck into the mouth-watering selection of tapas, which you can pick at while you lounge or in between bouts of sun-worshipping. Crunchy king prawns with sweet and sour chilli, Iberian ham with fresh tomato bread or steamed mussels Marinera all feature.

To start, try the traditional Spanish gazpacho, the Burratina with pesto and homemade tomato jam or the beef carpaccio with rocket and parmesan – you find that the menu is simply awash with Mediterranean favourites that have been modernised with a creative twist. The main menu is divided into fish, meat, pasta and paella subsections, so there’s plenty of local flavour to sample. The bullit de peix (stewed fish with rice) is an Ibicenco speciality that must be tasted, the grilled spiny lobster from Ibiza is a luxurious treat and the sea bass with vegetables and pea puree is divine. Meat lovers will be delighted by the Atzaró Aberdeen Angus beef burger or beef tenderloin with candied shallots, while those looking for a hearty plate of food will find solace in the homemade spinach ravioli stuffed with pumpkin and ricotta, or any of the variants featured on the extensive paella menu – black rice and seafood specialities among them. The wise know to always leave room for dessert, and that should especially be the case here, where cheesecake with fruit coulis, chocolate coulant with vanilla ice cream and fruit carpaccio with caramelised cream cheese all vie for the position of best in house.

Atzaró Beach is the kind of relaxed, beachside experience that you go in search of when you’re in Ibiza. Open to everyone, and with a captivating kids’ corner to keep the little ones occupied while you relax, not to mention stunning live music played on various dates across summer, it embodies that warm, authentic welcome that you want in a home away from home. Stylish yet carefree, world-class but rooted in the island’s natural appeal, this is beachside dining at its best – not a blue mood in sight.

A trip down culinary memory lane

This little slice of Breville-grilled goodness – cleverly served up on the side of a delicate white onion soup starter – is just one of the many ways head chef Lee Milne uses nostalgia to entice diners into the world of culinary flair and flavour at Room 39 at Pikes, and it’s a tactic that’s proven to be successful in the recently revamped restaurant in summer 2018. Milne and his highly skilled team of professional chefs are all classically trained – many boasting Michelin level backgrounds – and their philosophy is to create hearty, honest food made from local ingredients with a contemporary twist, complemented by that little touch of nostalgia. Think flavour-filled gastro-cooking but without all the unnecessary fuss! Take the 11-spiced cauliflower for example – Milne wanted to create a vegetarian starter that packed a lot of punch and took inspiration from the guilty pleasure of the Colonel’s secret herbs and spices to create these mouth-watering morsels with smoked alioli that are almost too good to share.

The smoked ham hock and foie gras ballotine is a dish that takes more than two weeks in the making – from the moment the chefs begin pickling their very own homemade piccalilli (“We’re in trouble if we suddenly run out,” laughs Milne when explaining the process). As ham hock is not readily available in Spain, the chefs brine, slow-cook and strip the meat themselves, before reforming it around a cylinder of buttery foie gras. There’s a taste of the 1980s in there somewhere, fused with the sweetness of local figs and a port reduction. For Spanish diners, the nostalgia comes via the grilled octopus – a dish that is a nod to the classic Galician dish yet given a modern twist by being served on a pillow of aerated potato instead of the typical waxy boiled slices.

When the time comes to order your main meal, happy childhood memories are evoked through dishes such as the glazed pig cheeks, served with the traditionally British combo of bubble and squeak and instead of apple sauce, crispy chunks of Granny Smith Apple – topped with the kind of crackling you’d fight your siblings for at the dinner table. A selection of classics – the Pikes cheeseburger (which has a veggie cousin, the Beetroot & Quinoa Burger), the melt-in-your-mouth beef fillet served with pressed potato and mini Mediterranean vegetables and pan-fried wild sea bass with prawn butter – sates the appetites of the über-hungry or fussy eaters amongst your group (there’s always one!). Allowing the true flavours of the produce to shine is the sign of a great chef – rather than showing off with garnishes or foams, it’s just about cooking everything until it’s j-u-u-s-t right.

There’s an old wives’ tale that tells of people possessing a separate stomach for dessert – and when you’ve feasted your eyes on the Pikes menu, you’ll be hoping this is indeed true. This season’s hit sweet dish at the restaurant is the Egg Custard Tart – yep, there’s that nostalgia again – but be warned: this is not your average custard tart by any means. Each next-level tart takes more than 24 hours to create, with about as much love poured into the bowl as eggs! Hand-grated fresh nutmeg is the finishing touch before the tart is individually sliced and served with poached rhubarb and a homemade macaroon. One mouthful and you’ll be back in grandma’s kitchen in seconds… and quite possibly ordering seconds at the same time.

In another clever nod to the all-time classics, the coconut and pineapple baked Alaska has been given an upgrade in the Pikes kitchen. Made with pineapple parfait and toasted Italian meringue, it’s then blow-torched until it reaches the perfect hedgehog-like caramelised appearance, and served with coconut ice cream for two. Nothing beats tapping into the crispy shell to discover the sweet and fruity goodness oozing from inside… and if you’re too young to remember the original, never mind! You can still appreciate why the original became a classic in the first place. Taking your tastebuds on a trip down memory lane has never been easier – simply reserve a table at Room 39 and let the dishes do all the talking.

The scent of a WooMooN

This has largely been thanks to WooMooN – the eye-opening, open-air party that was launched three years ago in the hills of San Jose at Cova Santa – and the subsequent spate of similar parties that have popped up all over the island ever since. In previous years, I have written all about the sights of WooMooN, and of course, I’ve waxed lyrical about the sounds of WooMooN, but what has really made an impression on me this year (in addition to the former, both of which are once again simply magical) are the smells associated with WooMooN. Talk about a sensory overload. With only one week to go before my favourite party celebrates its closing on Sunday August 26, 2018, I thought it was only fitting that I complete my trifecta of WooMooN reviews with an overview of its many scents.

The first thing that struck me as I parked my car in the hillside car park was the smell of the campo after the rain. It was so fresh, so green (if that can indeed be a smell) and instantly made me feel happy. The power scent has to affect our emotions has long been studied, and on this day, my olfactory receptors were feeling fine. As soon as we walked through the entrance, a waft of fresh herbs floated over the airwaves, thanks to the many mojito and cocktail stands in the market area grinding freshly plucked mint, specially grown Tagetes Minuta (which is Peruvian black mint, despite its green colour) and limes on demand. So much better than pre-mixed drinks or beer in a warm cup!

Of course, to purchase these bespoke drinks one needs to first snap up some drinks tickets from a little stall next to the famous elephant statues in the pond. While waiting our turn in the queue, I couldn’t help but notice a v-e-r-y distinct smell hanging around. Ahh… pond water. Considered a delicacy in some parts of Japan, and a pest in places where it just attracts mosquitos, I knew it was coming from beneath those elly trunks. Note: I should probably take this opportunity to tell you, I have been told in the past I have an extremely heightened sense of smell. And as such, I am highly sensitive to perfumes and odors other people may not blink an eye at. So don’t worry – the pond smell isn’t offensive or anything, it’s just… distinct. And pondy.

With a drink finally in hand, we strolled a little further up the hill and the air became thick with the thick, rich and unmistakeably sweet aroma of waffles and crepes. Mmmm… I do not know how people can bypass a street food cartlike this without indulging. Sugary, chocolately, Nutella-y goodness. I wasn’t even hungry but I followed my nose’s orders and ordered something to fuel my dancing shoes. Waffle consumed, we finally ascended the stairs that take you towards the dance floor, only to be enveloped in a soft and fragrant hint of raspberry. Or was it sherbert? I couldn’t quite be sure – until I looked inside the VIP area and spotted the culprit – a whole shelf full of shiny silver hookahs, ready to be puffed on by the party people who no longer think cigars are slick. So really, what I’d been sniffing was a fruity mix of apple, raspberry, lemon and blueberry among others. Sure beats second-hand cigarette smoke if you ask me!

Speaking of which, it’s nice to note cigarette fumes are few and far between at WooMooN. You’re far more likely to get a nose-full of weed, which doesn’t cling to your clothes and hair like a bad smell, on the dance floor here. And so, onto the dance floor we went. Straight down to the front because quite surprisingly, it’s where the best breeze is, my senses were instantly overwhelmed by something familiar; something slightly medicinal; something that wasn’t necessarily pleasant but wasn’t bad either (you know the kind of scent I mean?). I racked my brains for what it could be. I looked around for where it could be coming from. I sniffed my nose up in the air like a hunting dog until BINGO! I got it – it was the earthy essence of PALO SANTO coming from the DJ booth! Keeping dance floors cleansed of bad energy since the dawn of time…

For the next couple of hours, there were three highly recognisable smells that took turns dominating the dance floor. I’m going to list them in order of preference. First, that oh-so-delectable, mouther-wateringly good hit of barbecued meat. Smoky, crispy grilled goodness, just tempting, teasing and tantalising me to leave the dance floor and book a table in the terrace restaurant (but since I’d already eaten the waffle, I knew I couldn’t fit it in). Next up, a whiff of something fishy (I should also mention here that I don’t eat anything from the sea –maybe a fish-eater would not have scoffed!) that evoked the memories of a fish and chip shops on a hot summer’s day. Then the wind would change and smoky barbecue would return… The third most significant scent on the dance floor is an odour I have detected on many a dance floor in the past – in a club and open-air alike. It’s that moment when the clubber next to you raises their arms for a hands-in-the-air moment of ecstacy… only for you to discover that she/he has not shaved her armpits since, well, ever, and she/he clearly also does not believe in deodorant. Maybe they’re one of those hippy types who believes baking soda, apple cider vinegar and lemon will do the trick; or maybe they’re one of those who finds natural human body odour attractive, because people certainly do – to each their own. But I for one, am a big believer in personal hygiene (perhaps due to the aforementioned heightened sense of smell) and not a fan of my ‘airtime’ being interrupted by someone else’s BO. I mean… sure, we’re not in the incense-infused VIP section, but surely having a wash and applying deodorant is just common courtesy to your fellow humans on the dance floor?

One of the many things I’ve learned this year is that while you cannot controls the actions (ie, lack of personal hygiene) of others, you can control your reactions and with this in mind, I decided I wasn’t going to let a slightly unpleasant pheromone or two mar my evening and simply shimmied over to the other side of the dance floor. Problem solved. When the music was over and we headed back down to the market area, the rising scent of corn-tortillas on a hot grill instantly transported my memory to Mexico and I quickly found myself in line to order some tacos. The association between scent and memory really is am amazing thing – while I’m not sure Eau de la WooMooN is not going to be a fragrance snapped up by one of the major perfume houses any time soon, I know that in my mind, it will always remind me of those wonderful hot summer Sunday nights spent dancing in the San Jose hills.

Enchanting events

When all these factors combine, alfresco dining becomes the simplest of undiluted pleasures, and in Ibiza there’s nowhere better to experience a Mediterranean feast than at Finca La Plaza, a restaurant at the very heart of the island that specialises in harnessing enchanting moments for all to savour. Set just off the main square in the bustling, bohemian little village of Santa Gertrudis, Finca La Plaza exudes exquisite charm. Its pièce de resistance is a stunning pebbled garden adorned with dark wooden tables themselves topped with candles, woven raffia chairs plumped up for comfort and fairylights strung between palm trees for added romance. But the magnetism continues inside too, where cosy corners strewn with cushions and soft, low lighting all add to the restaurant’s appeal, which naturally, starts and ends with delicious Mediterranean fare and ends with free-flowing wine and unstoppable conversation.

Open all year round, Finca La Plaza buzzes with vibrancy whatever the month, largely as a result of chitter chatter from satisfied diners, but also from live music nights on Saturdays when the purity of voice and clarity of acoustic sounds blend to create a special kind of aural pleasure that floats through the air. Then there’s the food, which creates a subtle energy all of its own. From sharing plates and salads, charcoal oven grilled cuts of meat and fish, and a selection of main courses, there’s something to suit every taste and appetite, plus a bespoke menu of expertly mixed cocktails to accompany every course. It goes without saying that the captivating nature of Finca La Plaza makes it ideal for long, intimate dinners shared with loved ones, but in actual fact, separate areas are available for hire, making it a perfect spot for events, too. Those in search of a memorable place for celebrating a milestone birthday can reserve a dedicated area, while for larger events like parties, engagement celebrations or wedding receptions, the entire restaurant can be reserved, allowing you to spend a balmy Mediterranean night up close with friends and family, united in the joy of the occasion. For island businesses now seeing the end of the season in sight, it’s a great location to treat your team to an end-of-season dinner.

The stunning setting of the restaurant also makes it an obvious choice for weddings. Canapés, cocktails and champagne can be served in the aromatic garden on arrival, with guests free to mingle and converse as they please. The party can then continue in the restaurant, where guests can enjoy a seated meal, cooked to the high standards of the Finca La Plaza kitchen. There are two special event menus and bespoke options can also be designed to suit your tastes. The first includes starters of grilled artichoke with lemon, spinach, mint and a touch of rosemary, sautéed baby squid served alongside roasted Iberian ham with parsley and garlic oil, and trio of homemade croquettes. Mouth-watering mains are then available to choose – ravioli with burrata, creamy courgette and lemon sauce, wild sea bass fillet with Mediterranean sauce, or corn fed baby chicken. It’s all topped off with desserts including traditional flaó – a Catalan speciality pastry with filling made from goat cheese, eggs, sugar and mint, or a selection of ice creams in delicious flavours of chocolate, vanilla, lemon or hazelnut. The second menu is slightly higher in price, but features a range of additional show-stopping touches like Ibérico de Bellota ham served with toasted bread, cherry tomato and basil to start.

The main course options are different, too. Choose from gratin Mahon cheese macaroni and seasonal black truffle, red prawn tartar with lemon and lavender scent (fresh from the garden, of course), and delectable lamb ribs with buttered potatoes and charcoal vegetables. For dessert, attempt to decide between creamy Gianduja – an Italian speciality chocolate praline, served with hazelnut ice cream, or a classic tarte tatin served with vanilla ice cream – in either scenario, you’re sure to be in total dessert heaven. Wine and water packs can also be added to the menu, as required. So from warm, cherished dinners with your nearest and dearest to small events worth celebrating, and right the way through to large-scale gatherings – Finca La Plaza offers something for all. Regardless of occasion, guests will head home with a head full of memories having tasted a quintessential slice of Mediterranean life.

The all-new Pure Seven spa at five-star luxury resort 7Pines Kempinski Ibiza is a truly extraordinary wellness centre overlooking the mythical rock of Es Vedra. Offering an array of cutting-edge treatments and therapies, fitness, wellness and yoga activities plus plenty of relaxation, it is open all year round and welcomes hotel guests and external visitors alike. Behind every impressive brand is a great team, and Pure Seven is no exception. The spa boasts a tight-knit team of wellness professionals who have been hand-picked for their unique energy, personality and of course, skills. Meet some of the core team members and learn more about their journeys to Ibiza and Pure Seven below…

Lucía

Born in Valencia, Lucía always felt a connection with her Balearic island neighbours, but spent more than 20 years honing her exceptional skills in spas and wellness centres around the globe before she felt the call to move here permanently. A pioneer in the Spanish wellness industry in Spain, Lucía was originally involved in the development of spa products at the time when five-star hotel complexes had only just begun introducing wellness services, followed by years spent training therapists to the highest possible standards and opening luxury spas around the world. Today, she is at the helm of Pure Seven, where her passion for wellness is matched by a truly stunning location and five-star facilities. In addition to creating the impressive spa menu and hand-picking the entire team, she is also responsible for the implementation of a wellness philosophy throughout the hotel – from the 100-percent organic amenities and products used throughout to custom designed retreat menus based around detoxing, weight loss or fitness to ensuring every last detail is perfect – from the volume of the music to the level of lighting and the scent of candles to the textures of fabrics used, she strives for perfection each and every day. “I’m so lucky my profession is my passion,” she says.

Noemí

“I am in love with the energy of human beings,” says highly experienced therapist Noemí with passion, when asked what led her down the wellness path. As a little girl she would practice massage on her grandma’s tired feet, and on discovering she had the ability to help reduce pain, she began to explore more healing options. A former dancer, her knowledge and awareness of anatomy assists in her treatments – which range from Thai massage and traditional Ayurvedic treatments to chiropractic, sports massage and myofascial techniques. She honed her skills at the most respected school in Madrid for many years, before the travel bug took her to Chang Mai, where she studied Thai massage from the masters in 2011, immersing herself in local life and culture. She describes her style as a therapist as ‘working on layers’, preferring to treat each client as a whole rather than addressing singular concerns, “I have a conversation with your body and I follow the flow to heal it. The most important thing is to be present, to feel and see what is happening on the massage bed or mat, and to make the client feel happy.”

Raul

Growing up in Zaragoza, Raul began playing sports because his father loved football, but a natural aptitude saw him go on to study physical education followed by personal training. His desire to work with an open-minded, cosmopolitan clientele hailing from all over the globe led him to Ibiza, where he could put his advanced skills and cutting-edge training techniques to best use. His extensive experience means within just one session with a client, he can see exactly what kind of workouts and training techniques they can benefit from. “I love to help people,” he says. “I really appreciate the opportunity to make changes in people’s lives. It’s a beautiful thing.” Keeping people motivated is his biggest challenge and he admits that sometimes his job feels like part trainer, part psychologist… but he wouldn’t have it any other way. His own wellness ethos is to live life in the healthiest way possible, with a balance of good nutrition, exercise and rest but to also allow yourself to enjoy yourself. With Pilates, TRX, kettle bells, functional training, HIIT sessions, weights and machines – not to mention the stunning great outdoors at 7Pines Kempinski Ibiza – at his disposal, workouts with Raul are varied, fun and inspiring.

Sara

With her warm and gentle manner, gorgeous glowing complexion and softly spoken style, meeting Sara is almost like falling under her spell. Her honesty with clients allows them to discover the treatments, therapies and products they truly need, while her calm yet considered teaching style helps all students, no matter what level, go deeper into their yoga practice. Hailing from the north of Spain, just outside of Pamplona, she first felt the call to Ibiza 15 years ago but didn’t think of it again until this year when she was looking for a change of pace. Trusting her intuition, she returned to the white isle where things fell into place at Pure Seven – a place where she can take care of the needs of all clients in addition to hosting twice daily hatha yoga classes. “I always say yoga is about strength, stretch and balance,” she says. “Not only in the body but also in the mind and soul. The union of these three things is yoga.” Teaching allows her to go deep into her own practice too, where she is constantly learning. “It’s not about running,” she concedes wisely. “Why would you run if you don’t know how to walk? First, learn how to walk… but step by step.”

Marian

With over two decades of experience in the fitness industry, it was a stroke of luck that brought Marian to Ibiza from her home in Barcelona. She originally came to the island to work in a local Pilates studio for one month, and after falling in love with the island she knew she had to make it her home. A true all-rounder when it comes to the body, Marian – who first honed her craft in gyms, followed by studying yoga, Pilates and physiotherapy – loves to mix things up with her clients, with fitness classes, personal training sessions, yoga and massage. “Every day shouldn’t be the same,” she says. “I like to promote a healthy balance.” She loves the challenge of teaching new clients every day in a resort environment and is passionate about perfection when it comes to technique, be it in her sports-based massages, precision yoga classes or fitness classes. She sees running as her own form of personal meditation time and also enjoys hosting silent nature walks, where clients can simply reflect and observe the stunning environment around them. “We all have our own ways to disconnect,” she says. “I like to help people see that being active can actually be a form of relaxation.”
