‘Happy new year!’ Declared Ibiza photographer Phrank as we walked in to the opening of Amante Beach Club & Restaurant, making me feel ever-so-slightly confused… Had I fallen asleep for seven months or stepped inside a machine that took me back in time?
Turns out he was right. For every year-round resident like Miss W, who is facing the annual transitional summer-to-winter cycle once again, there is a seasonal worker arriving back to the island as fresh as if it were the very first day of a new year. Because in a way, for them, it is. The beginning of a new Ibiza year…
With that fresh in my mind, I stepped into the sophisticated surrounds of Amante, looking at everything and everyone as if it were the first time this year – despite the fact I’d seen the vast majority of them yesterday at Sands. And what a lovely, smiley, bunch of beautiful people they were indeed.
The sunshine poured onto the earthy private beach and rustic terrace below, while the crowd sipped mojitos and snacked on bite sized barbeque bits, like skewers of succulent chicken and vegetable or tasty beef burgers. Opposite was the Ibiza specialty, melt-in-your-mouth Jamon Serrano, delicately sliced from the bone, but the distinctly summery smell of the barbeque sizzling in the air had won me over while I was walking down the rocky path!
As the sun slowly moved to the west and dusk settled over the restaurant, I couldn’t help but be amazed by just how beautiful Amante is – again. As the sky turns a pretty violet hue, the fairy lights around the edge of the sand start to light up and floodlights illuminate the cliffside, it really is breathtaking… and a place I hope to spend much more time this summer.
Despite the fact there was so much beauty going on around me, there was something on the ground that continually caught my eye – shoes. Clearly there was a large Italian expat contingent in attendance, as their footwear never fails to impress! From silver studded black converse and multi-coloured cool high tops for the boys to handcrafted leather fringed knee high boots and amazing leather embossed ankle sandals, the fashion stakes at Amante were impeccably high.
Soon the melodic techno music softly floated through the airwaves, and a makeshift dance floor started to form on the lower deck. With the hazy multi-coloured sky and open air setting plus one sole hippy raver swaying to the beat of his own drum, the vibe felt a little like an exotic full moon party… however a sleepy Miss W managed to make her exit before midnight and get some beauty sleep… it’s been a l-o-n-g weekend!
THE GOOD: Remember the bumpy, rocky road that led to Amante that was really only good for those with a four-wheel drive? Gone! Having been freshly tarmaced just in time for the beginning of the new season, it’s now a sheer smooth pleasure to cruise on down to this chic seaside Ibiza restaurant.
THE BAD: Such a shame that the sun disappears relatively early from Amante as it heads to the other side of the island for sunset, but apart from carving a big chunk out of the rock cliffs that make it the spectacularly intimate and private location that it is, there’s not much Amante can do about that!
THE GOSSIP: Miss W spied a certain Spanish nightclub promoter sampling ginger beer (Amante is one of the few places on the island that he real deal is served) for the first time and raving about how delicious the tangy drink was. However upon discovering the tasty beverage in question was non-alcoholic, he couldn’t have swapped it for a ‘real’ beer quickly enough!
