BBC Radio 1 – Celebrating 20 years in Ibiza

Britain’s best-loved radio station returns this weekend for a packed few days of live broadcasts, huge club nights and some very special one-off events in celebration of their 20th year on the island. Since the first Ibiza Essential Selection was heard live from Ku with Nicky Holloway in 1995, Radio One has supported Ibiza and its music scene wholeheartedly, choosing the first weekend of August – a bank holiday in the UK – to decamp their production crew and star DJs alike to the Balearic hotspot hoping to capture the sounds of summer.

Fans back home can listen to all of the shows across the weekend live, as well as some specially commissioned programming, celebrating the history of house music, but for the hordes of dedicated followers who are actually on the island this week, this is what Radio One has in store for you.

First up, tonight (Thursday July 30, 2015) Radio One is broadcasting live from Richie Hawtin’s Space extravaganza ENTER. The station’s own Heidi will be on air, alongside Hot Since 82, and the techno boss himself Hawtin. A perfect build up to the weekend’s activities.

Tomorrow morning, somewhere across the island, Nick Grimshaw presents his morning show, although there is a long standing tradition now of Radio One DJs going missing or messing up on air during this spot, ever since host Lisa I’anson famously went AWOL at the Manumission Motel back in 1998 and missed her slot completely. Somehow the early mornings seem much easier to cope with back in the UK.

On Friday, the enormous stage of Ushuaia Beach Hotel sees Calvin Harris and Disclosure headlining, whilst Dusky, Jamie Jones, Patrick Topping and the Radio 1 trio of Pete Tong, Danny Howard and Monki complete the DJ list. White Ibiza blogger Miss W is hoping for sightings of Calvin’s girlfriend (obvs), and this is the place to be for some heavyweight star spotting. The show will be played out live in the UK from 6pm until 11pm and there are still some tickets left to be in with a chance of catching this show.

Part two of the celebration moves to Sunset Strip in San Antonio, home to the world-renowned Café Mambo and Cafe Del Mar. Radio One have a long history with both venues, and this very special year sees Rudimental and Duke Dumont join host Danny Howard, with Pete Tong and Annie Mac entertaining guests such as Erick Morillo, Gregory Porter, Blonde and Redlight. Sure to have a festival feel in the air, the event is free, but tickets will be allocated and distributed to lucky fans through the build-up. Get there early to be selected to be part of the crowd. Or of course, our favourite way to enjoy the event is by boat, parked right in front of Mambos. The best seat in the house by far.

Sunday sees the station rock up at the legendary Ibiza Rocks Hotel – who also have celebrations underway this summer, for their 10th year on the island. Faithless, Carl Cox and Annie Mac provide the soundtrack for this third open-air party of the weekend, which will be broadcast between 7pm and 11pm UK time. We’ve been tipped off about a rather special after-party too, so look out for wristbands at the hotel to get your invite, if you have even a smidgen of energy left. Truly a weekend to remember.
