We Love – A new era
Wednesday June 17, 2015 marks the dawn of a new day (or night as the case may be) for iconic Ibiza clubbing brand We Love, as they officially take over the Wednesday night slot at Sankeys Ibiza, in a mammoth move that has got everyone – from clubbing enthusiasts, ex-ravers, DJs, dancers, promoters, club owners and probably even their dogs – talking.
Having dominated the Ibiza club scene for the past 17 years while at the helm of the mighty Space Ibiza clubbing roster, the last minute switcheroo to a much more intimate and lesser-known venue came as quite a shock to many. But, as they say, a change is as good as a holiday, and on a holiday island like Ibiza, it is change that keeps our tourism industry booming.
For We Love founder Darren Hughes, the all-new We Love Sankeys could be a little like going back to his roots, as he reunites with former We Love collaborator Danny Whittle (the duo also worked together on clubbing mega brand Cream prior to We Love). This year, the challenge is less about bringing numbers to a cavernous club and more about creating an overall experience that encompasses the brand’s forward thinking musical policies.
As for the club itself, 2015 sees Sankeys Ibiza show off an impressive set of renovations, including new LED lighting, new VOID sound systems in the Basement and Spektrum, the Pioneer GS Wave towers in the LAB and plenty more technical treats for the music geeks among us. Describing the three rooms and roof terrace of Sankeys as a more boutique version of We Love, Hughes likens the club to an intimate venue in Manchester or London, but set in the backstreets of Bossa.
While weekly line-ups are yet to be officially announced, this week’s teaser shows a selection of special guests that read like the DJs of We Love past and future, covering a broad spectrum of electronic, acid, house and dance. From the massive Rudimental playing a DJ set at the opening party, to Bugged Out, Dusky, Eton Messy, Gorgon City, Hannah Wants, Henry Saiz, Huxley, Ivan Smagghe, James Zabiela, Kidnap Kid, PBR Streetgang, Sasha, Simian Mobile Disco, The 2 Bears and many, many more – plus a commitment to encouraging island residents – the new We Love looks set to attract a combination of faithful fans and newcomers alike.
And once you get used to it, We Love Wednesdays does roll off the tongue quite easily…
