Smart Charter Ibiza: Behind the scenes

Driving along the airport highway it’s hard not to miss Smart Charter Ibiza’s brand new sparkling headquarters as you whizz by Ibiza town – a sleek warehouse inside the Poligono Gesa complex with soaring glass windows and rows of waving flags. The interior is equally impressive – one part slick showroom and one part playhouse for the brand’s 75 employees. The ambience is of a big happy family buzzing with activity.

The move to bigger premises was driven by the success of Smart Charter Ibiza’s boat rental service and an increasing number of enquiries about sales. Smart Charter Ibiza’s directors, Charlie Veale and Alessandra Grisoni, realised that the team would have to increase substantially to accommodate the rapidly growing fleet and the rising needs of the clientele who wanted a year round service. The company’s existing office, just off the port in La Marina in Plaza Sa Terulia, will remain open throughout the season and this year also sees the first Smart Charter Ibiza office open in the port of Santa Eulalia. Talk about island domination.

The main showroom is chock full of brand new boats, jet skis, sea bobs and any number of accoutrements. Every boat that is for rent is also for sale in addition to a select number of brand new vessels yet to have hit the sea. Whether it’s a rental or a sale every single boat goes through the rigors of Smart Charter’s team of mechanics before leaving the premises.

The workshop is an obsessive compulsive’s dream come true – there is surely no other mechanic’s garage as clean and orderly. Every boat in the rental fleet is completely refurbished during the winter. Engines are removed, serviced and fully cleaned. Upholstery is replaced, surfaces are repainted and every component of the boat is thoroughly tested. It’s here that new boats are customised to the client’s desires, changing upholstery and paint colour, fitting any additions required and stocking the boat with life vests and water toys. The six on-staff mechanics work hard to maintain the company’s high standards of service, comfort and reliability.

Upstairs is the brains trust, manning the phones and organising thousands of boating trips for happy holidaymakers and sales for keen sailors. The vibe is relaxed yet organised, a feeling of camaraderie runs through the whole team from downstairs to up. “Every member is important,” says Charlie. “Without each component there is no cohesion. Everything is meticulously cared for, our clients, our stock and our people.”

Smart Charter Ibiza does a lot to cultivate happiness at work, understanding that it’s the incredible team of people who make it all happen. The summer season always starts with a family day out on the water so staff can show loved ones what they do for a living. A huge communal kitchen is where everyone gets together for lunch, to hang out and connect before heading back to work.

Every aspect of the company is in-house; no external services are used, that way each employee, from the cleaners to the sales managers are trained in the Smart Charter Ibiza way. The system is streamlined so each member of the team can work together; stress free, to create an amazing experience for their customers. It was British novelist and sailor, Nicholas Monsarrat who wrote, ‘Sailors, with their built in sense of order, service and discipline, should really be running the world.’ A world run by Smart Charter would be a pretty cool place, indeed.
