Smart Charter Ibiza itinerary – South-side sailing

Formentera? Sure, it’s stunning. But there are plenty of alternative sailing routes around Ibiza’s very own stunning coastline that are equally as impressive – and Smart Charter Ibiza captain Alvaro gives us the inside scoop on his favourite places.

After giving us a sneak peak on the west side last month, Alvaro now suggests a tour of the south side of the island, for wild and natural beauty, including the salt flats of Salinas, some lively daytime parties and to take in the stunning bays of Cala Jondal and Port d’es Torrent. It’s a tricky side to sail to due to Ibiza’s prevailing east winds, but if the weather is fine the south is a treat in the morning hours – just curb the partying and set the alarm early so you can make the most of your time at sea!

10am – Sunrise sailing (almost!)

Step aboard a Sunseeker speedboat or luxury yacht in Ibiza town’s beautiful port and get settled into sea life, as your Smart Charter Ibiza captain sails to Cap d’es Falco for the first of your morning pit-stops. These sensational cliffs are best viewed from your luxury vessel in the morning light; when the sun rises in line with the rugged rock formation, reflecting and cascading light from the sea. The clear, bright, morning light accentuates all the colours of the wild Ibiza landscape. A beautiful start to the day and well worth getting out of bed for!

11am – Brunch & beach bathing

Further around the bay is the beautiful beach of Es Cavallet, famed for its white sand and rolling waves. With stunning views of Formentera and Dalt Vila the beach is very popular with tourists and locals alike – stay aboard to admire the views and worship the warm Mediterranean sun whilst avoiding the crowds.

Midday – Salt strutting

Backing onto the spectacular salt flats and nature reserve of Ses Salines is one of the most iconic of all Ibiza beaches, Las Salinas. This long expanse of golden sand, surrounded by pine forest is home to an eclectic mix of jetsetters, locals and hippies who all come to relish the beautiful views and party vibe.

A place to see and be seen – especially on a luxury yacht – let your Smart Charter Ibiza captain order a tender to take you for lunch at one of the Salinas hotspots. The most popular are The Jockey Club and Sa Trinxa – known for healthy food, Balearic beats and their daytime party vibe. Or if you fancy breaking the mould, head to Salinas original chiringuito, Guarana Salinas Beach Club, established in 1973, for elegant tranquillity and a mouth-watering menu.

1pm – Tales & tours

The 2000-year old salt flats of Ses Salines are steeped in history, and your born-and-bred Smart Charter Ibiza captain will be happy to take you on a cultural sea tour. Established as a communal good in 13th century, salt from theset flats is still harvested to this day, making the famous Sal de Ibiza salt now found in homes, shops, restaurants and even the airport. Spy the crystalline salt mountain as you pass Experimental Beach Ibiza and the Sal Rossa watch tower – a defence tower built to protect the inhabitants of Ibiza from pirate attacks in the 16th century! (Luckily, there are less pirates to beware of now – and definitely not the type who arrive by sea.)

3pm – VIP service & sunshine

If the east wind prevails nip into the nearby bay of Cala Jondal for sunshine, shelter and VIP service. Popular with boat owners (don’t worry, you can pretend your charter is yours for the day) and a generally stylish crowd, moor up in the crystal waters overlooking the pebble beach, pine forest and jagged cliffs. “There’s something for everyone here, and we’ll help you find the perfect spot to relax, party or waterski!” Captain Alvaro muses.

Frequented by the rich and famous, established bars including Blue Marlin, Tropicana and Es Xarcu and Yemanja, offer a door to door (or boat to bar as the case may be) zodiac service to bring you to your chosen spot. Alternatively, let them bring everything to you, and enjoy private dining on your luxury yacht.

For a late lunch the captain recommends authentic ibicenco paella at Es Xarcu, or for something more upbeat, put the champagne on ice and join the other jetsetters at Blue Marlin, to start the party early with the island’s biggest DJs. Too VIP for the VIP clubs? Host your own exclusive party on board with Smart Charter Ibiza’s brand new sound systems, and have your mojitos delivered to the your deck.

4.30pm Peace & quiet

The final stop (if you can bare to leave the beach clubs), Port d’es Torrent is the perfect place to relax for families (or those feeling a little partied out). Further round the coast, this hidden gem enjoys calm Caribbean-esque waters and perfectly captures the golden afternoon light.
