Ibiza loves a daytime party. Ibiza loves dancing in the sand. And while the critics have been saying it can no longer be done, the bevy of beautiful beach bars on Playa D’en Bossa have been busy proving them wrong all summer – and today, it was Sands’ turn to shine with a very special event featuring none other than mega star DJ Carl Cox spinning a unique funk, soul and jazz session as a treat for island residents and visitors alike…
This summer Miss W has spent quite a bit of time at Sands and is a big fan of the food, the service and the surroundings. However, I have to admit that when I heard Carl Cox would be playing – even though it was going to be a set that was worlds away from his Tuesday night techno style – I couldn’t help but wonder just how it was going to work. From the setup to the sound, I just couldn’t imagine it. But of course, like most ventures under the experienced eyes of Jason Bull and Alex Pascual (along with Carl’s Space crew), it couldn’t have been a more perfectly executed event, from start to finish.
Laidback groovy funk was wafting over the airwaves as Miss W arrived at the venue, on time for once in her life! And I certainly wasn’t the only one. Every table inside the restaurant was full, the VIP area and day beds were full and plenty of gatherers were milling about on the sand near the mobile bar outside just starting to get into the groove.
And speaking of groovy, there he was, Carl Cox himself, getting into the rhythm of his own groove behind the booth and may I compliment him on his suave beach stylings! A flowing white shirt, white pants and a straw hat and you couldn’t get more chilled out, all smiles (as always) and providing a wicked soundtrack to the afternoon on the beach. A lot of people may not know it, but Carl’s was originally inspired to start DJing through disco, rare groove, new york hip hop and soul – and he’s still got the tunes to prove it.
Digging through those old crates (well actually they were more like virtual crates, because although Carl is reputed to have a record collection of over 100 000, he was using his laptop and computer to DJ today rather than vinyl) unearthed gems that proved Carl is indeed a funk soul brother – and that also inspired guests to push aside tables in the restaurant to create a makeshift dance floor while those on the sand kept edging closer and closer to their hero as more and more people started to arrive.
It was very much a family affair, with kids welcome (and Miss W was impressed by one little one sporting protective ear wear) and a definitely large proportion of yummy mummies in attendance! Ibiza’s beautiful people really were out in force, showing off their finest fashions, finally taking a breather now that the busiest part of the year is over and managing to catch up with friends who virtually drop off the radar in august every year!
On an interview with Ibiza Sonica, who were broadcasting the event live for those who couldn’t be there, Carl Cox basically reiterated the fact, saying he really enjoyed being able to put on an event for island workers and residents outside of the club, giving them a chance to finally let their hair down and have some fun now the season is coming to a close.
He came, he played, he conquered. We came, we danced, we hope he’s invited back for an encore in 2010!
THE GOOD: Hats off to the Sands crew, the Sonica crew and of course, the big man himself, Carl Cox, for pulling off an awesome, free-to-one-and-all event full of good vibes, big smiles, super summer sunshine (did they have a word to someone upstairs about perfecting that part?) and above all, wicked tunes. Living the life indeed…
THE BAD: We must admit the volume of the impressive Funktion 1 sound system was cranked right up today, pretty loud for those trying to have a good gossip over lunch. But then again, this is Ibiza, these lunchers knew what they’d signed up for and they loved every minute of it!
THE GOSSIP: Who said clubs and day parties couldn’t work in harmony? Certainly not Sands and Space – in fact, the major club were on hand to lend a hand to one of their favourite resident DJs in every way possible – from Space-branded barriers erected on the beach to keep the action contained and night security working extra shifts to keep things under control to Sands bar staff wearing Space t-shirts promoting the night’s festivities, this is the way forward for daytime events… Miss W was most impressed!
