Listen up! If you watched the recent White Ibiza style video ‘Ibiza’s OTHER party season’, you will have found yourself grooving (along with our gorgeous models) to the smooth sounds of J.Cub – aka vinyl-only record label E.A.R (Eclectic Avenue Records) co-founder Jacob Kelly. The concept behind the label – founded in the UK clubbing institution of Leeds by J.Cub alongside DJ Ryan Shaw and music loving marketing guru Leena Sharma – is simple. To release all original productions that stay true to house music, moving away from the saturated market of re-edits and using live musicians alongside the latest technology to create a unique and memorable sound.
Oh – and did we mention each Eclectic Avenue Records track is only released on vinyl, with just 300 limited edition copies available? The records only become downloadable once a series of ten have been released on wax, making the music desirable and timeless within the disposable era of digital tunes. That fact alone has certainly grabbed the attention of many DJs and music lovers, however once you’ve listened to an E.A.R release, the calibre of the music does the talking – as our video attests!
Now in its third year, the label has firm ties in Ibiza, thanks to the unwavering dedication of Leena Sharma, who relocated to the white isle in 2010. The networking dynamo made it her business to get her tunes in the hands of the island’s tastemakers and house music enthusiasts, from Space and Pacha resident DJs to Ibiza Sonica presenters and with a selection of beats created by a true conglomerate of house musicʼs finest talents, both old and new – think Ashley Beedle, Luke Solomon, Joshua Iz, Pete Herbert, Toby Tobias, Nicholas and PBR Streetgang – under E.A.R’s belt, it was obvious this was a label with the ability to stand the test of time.
Fast forward to 2012 and E.A.R were busy hosting a room at the legendary We Love Space Sundays party and the famous Asylum Garden Party in Leeds among others, while their records were gaining support from DJs such as PBR Streetgang, Mark Farina, Ashley Beedle, Chris Duckenfield, Mr Doris and many more. Listen closely and you’ll hear them coming out of the speakers at Space, Pacha terrace, Café Mambo, El Chiringuito and streaming across the airwaves of Ibiza Sonica.
Jacob made his (surprisingly) first visit to the island for the label showcase at Space, and alongside his wife, Capitol Radio breakfast presenter Jojo, was immediately spellbound by what the island had to offer, both inside and outside of the music industry. ‘I remember our local bar Lo Cura being mesmerised by Jojo and Jacob’s impromptu rendition of Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’,’ recalls Sharma. ‘That is what this place does – it makes you feel free to be who you are and represent yourself musically.’
According to Sharma, while Leeds was the key ingredient in shaping the label (along with its three founders!) musically, with their new Ibiza connections, the trio can now spread their wings a little further and add more breadth to the E.A.R ethos. Now moving into their second set of ten exclusive records, The Red Series (following The Blue Series), you can expect to hear a lot more from E.A.R in Ibiza this summer – including more Ibiza tours by Jacob and Ryan and perhaps even the occasional impromptu DJ set from Sharma herself!
