Nominated for Best Tech House DJs in the upcoming 2011 DJ Awards, Layo & Bushwacka are playing it cool. Michelle Robertson caught up with one half of the duo, Layo Paskin, in the lead-up to get the lowdown…
How did you react when you found out about your nomination for DJ Awards 2011?
Of course, we were very happy – it’s an honour to be nominated for an award. However everyone in this category is a very big DJ… so it’s anyone’s game!
How would you define the genre of Tech House in 2011, and what must the perfect track reflect?
It’s always been about that house feeling with a tougher, more tech groove. There are way too many things we could say about what the perfect track must reflect…
Genres of music are continually evolving, what’s your prediction for the next new thing on the musical block in 2012?
It is a moving, growing culture, this year dominated more by the house side of music with many vocals. Knowing what’s next is always hard. We are working on a very electronic sound right now with a lot of emotion. Music is about separating the men from the boys production-wise, and about being consistent. There is so much music out there; the competition is so high.
Has anything or anybody in particular influenced you this year?
I’ve really enjoyed working more closely with Spanish promoters and producers in Ibiza. New relationships with work are never easy, but at the end of the day we are all after the same thing – a great night with great music.
What have been your highlights as a DJ this year, internationally and in Ibiza?
Brazil has always has been phenomenal for us and continues to be so. In Ibiza, our highlights have been the ‘Shake It All Night Long’ party at Amnesia with Marco Carola, as well as the nights with Magda and Paco Osuna. We have to mention of course our residency in London. The ability to build something and play with people we respect and admire – as well as be inspired by – helps push us on.
The DJ Awards has some special awards not voted for by the public – one of which is Best Ibiza Track. What’s been your biggest tune of the summer?
‘Super Charge’ by Just Be (promo).
What do you listen to for inspiration and who should we keep an eye on for next year?
Next year, who knows, but this year’s albums for us have included Audiofly, James Blake, John Tejada, Bon Iver and Black Keys.
You spend a lot of time in Ibiza… what would be your absolutely perfect day out on the white isle?
My secret spot near Cala Conte for the afternoon, then dinner at Café Parador and laughing with my friends, then going to smash it at Amnesia…
Lastly, what do you love most about Ibiza?
The hedonism and the energy! It is still the most sexy, raucous place in the world by a million miles!
