First impressions: We arrived at The Giri Residence on a hot and sunny Thursday afternoon, for a midweek getaway to celebrate the recent arrival of my au pair and escape the pre-season rush, plus of course to take advantage of the 20 percent discount on room rates throughout April.
The Giri is truly like a home away from home. As soon as I stepped through the big wooden door at the top of the stairs I was in design heaven, surrounded by luscious materials, luxurious textures and a sun drenched backyard with views to the ever-so-green countryside with a vast array of beds and loungers begging to be to tried out! I came here to relax but suddenly had the feeling I was going to be very busy indeed!
The staff (three gorgeous young ladies) were warm and inviting, without any of the stiff formalities of a regular hotel. I immediately felt relaxed and at home, among friends with a soft and loving energy, who all seem to personally love and believe passionately in their project. Laid-back luxury defined!
The room: We stayed in the Almendra Suite, a spacious junior suite for two or three guests with a split level separate living area (including mini bar, and all the mod cons) which was almost easy to miss given my attention was focused firmly on the luscious comfy bed with views over the gardens and countryside and the un-believe-able bathroom. Imagine, a stunning double shower with dark walls and smooth pebble floor, which softly massages the feet; double basins, ornate mirror, gorgeous organic products from REN UK, including the very nice touch of a night cream! The style of the room encompasses Indian reclaimed wooden doors and tables, oriental stairs and artwork all fused with modern touches. It may sound like a mish-mash, but it’s j-u-s-t right! I have no idea how they do it so seamlessly, but they truly have mastered the art of interior decoration.
Price: At 20 percent off the usual rate of 300€ per night (540€ in high season), the room was a steal!
Food and drink: The in-house kitchen is not a restaurant as such, but truly like being in the kitchen of a friend (who happens to be a very good cook!). Of course, there’s a stylish shared dining area, which could be set up for a large group but also has intimate areas should you want some romantic privacy. The Girl’s food concept is based on slow cooking, using local ingredients, with a small casual selection of dishes on offer each night. It had that Tuscan-inspired simplicity of ingredients plus warm, relaxed service. I have never in my life tastes such a ripe, amazing, tastebud pleasing simple salad of avocado and tomato – again, I don’t know how they do it, but they’ve mastered it!
Extras: An amazing private spa with customised treatments to meet your every desire, deity retreats out of season, plus unique and delicious cocktails from the intimate bar.
The verdict: My type of hotel! A home away from home surrounded by cutting edge design with international influences showing true creativity. Luxury and laidback service, friendly, cool, chic and unique. Don’t you just want to be like them?
