Making the food choices that are right for you and the world around you can be a tricky business these days… Are you feeling good about what you are eating? Or are you feeling completely confused by media scare-mongering, too much Google-research and wondering which way is the right way for you?
How do you know what is, essentially, good for you and your body?
Vegetarian or vegan? Whole foods, half-foods or super-foods? Gluten or wheat-free? Is it all a bit overwhelming? Chicken or eggs?
As humans, we are self-healing, self-balancing mechanisms. Yet the counter-culture, advertising-led conditioning of what we put on our plate also influences what we think we are tasting on our palates and shifts our whole being out of body-led eating to be driven by the mind, so that eating becomes led by our habits.
So just what is the best recipe for your own healthy eating happiness?
Conscious eating is key! Which means eating with care and attention and consciously choosing what you put on your plate and into your mouth. Chewing carefully gives your organisms time to create the saliva necessary to begin the digestion process. From here you can also taste if food is good for you… as long as you practice! Yes, really. It is like reawakening muscles in pilates or yoga, becoming present and putting down the laptop and focusing on your eating process itself.
And as you eat more consciously, you create space for your inner-intelligence to speak through your body, to feel what you are hungry for, to listen to your inner-being.
To begin, you need to ‘undo those conditionings that also become biological after a while. When we have fed the body a lot of the wrong types of salts and sugars, that is what the body begins asking for… How do you do undo and create a clean plate for healthy new beginnings?
(1) Remove refined sugar and processed foods. Give your body and your tastebuds the chance to open up again and re-sensitise. As you remove excess sugar and also caffeine, you come out of the mood-swing-tired-high-low cycles that involve our mind telling us what we think we want to be eating. We stop creating nutritional props and can choose what we genuinely feel we need.
(2) Eat locally and eat seasonally and cook as much as you can yourself. Here in Ibiza we generally eat seasonally. Without high street supermarkets to deliver delicacies to our doorstep, we buy fruit and veg fresh, have it organically delivered to our door, or even grow our own. By creating food from scratch we become much more aware through touching and feeling the vegetables and whole foods, of what they can actually give us.
In other words, Mother Nature is supporting us with our choosing and re-educating our pre-packaged-fast-yet-healthy-option palates from previous city lives. We learn to eat with the seasons and to eat local too.
(3) Eat small, frequently and perfectly formed portions. Rather than eating a big dinner because it is in front of you, or skipping breakfast on the fly to the station, regain your personal healthy eating power by asking yourself if you are really hungry. Create a healthy metabolism by eating sugar-free porridge (like lovely slow burn oats) with grated apple and cinnamon, or a piece of toast with olive oil and avocado. This helps kickstart your metabolism for the day, avoids the mid morning slump and removes the strain on your kidneys. Keep snacks like nuts and seeds, chopped carrots to chomp on between meals and to keep your metabolism flowing. Explore how and when your body best likes to eat and what amounts when.
And keep asking yourself – when I am eating this, how am I feeling? Listen to your body and your inner-self will speak.
