There was a buzz in the air in Ibiza this week surrounding the arrival of a certain tiny Australian singer, who was allegedly going to launch her new album here and potentially going to perform at Pacha. According to those in-the-know, it was a rumour, it was a hoax and it definitely wasn’t happening… but Miss W knew better!
You see, Miss W’s obsession with Kylie Minogue goes back even further than the Locomotion era (I’ll admit to aspiring to be just like Charlene from Neighbours at the tender age of 11), meaning I now have a sixth sense when it comes to news of my idol. Not that I’m a stalker or anything of course…
In fact, just a few weeks ago, when I had the pleasure of interviewing DJ Fat Tony (who’d worked on Aphrodite with Kylie), he let it slip that they’d be coming back to launch the album, so I was armed with inside information. Slowly but surely, information trickled in to my inbox (the villa was booked, the driver had been briefed, the venue was in lockdown) until finally, after much ado about, well, something, I received an invitation from The Shop, who were organising the mammoth international press conference, just three days before the event was due to take place.
Why thank you, I’d be delighted!
Sworn to secrecy, I spent the entire weekend in a minor panic about what to wear in the 31-degree (and rising) heat, until finally, it was time to make my way to Amante Beach Club. You couldn’t have picked a more perfect venue to keep an event like this on the down low, with it’s intimate, private beach setting and secluded location – not to mention the picture perfect (quite literally) backdrop.
As to be expected, the trusted team from The Shop – who are celebrating ten years in Ibiza in 2010 – ensured the entire operation was running like a well-oiled machine. From director Simeon Friend swiftly manouvering his troops, (including a gaggle of almost-identical girls wearing The Shop emblazoned shirts, carrying microphones for the press) into position to the new Kylie album, Aphrodite on constant repeat for the entire duration of the event, not one single detail was overlooked.
Like clockwork at her scheduled arrival time of 7pm, Kylie Minogue descended the wooden staircase, looking every inch the goddess in a floaty white pleated dress by Givenchy, albeit with some assistance to make sure she didn’t trip! Those sky-high gold and silver Giuseppe Zanotti heels could definitely prove to be a hazard on someone with less experience, but as Kylie confessed on stage, she’d done worse!
After a brief photo call, it was down to business, as radio presenter Emma B expertly led her through a series of targeted questions. Kylie became overwhelmed with emotion on being told her album was already number one in eight countries, and in the top ten in another 13 (and this is day one of sales, mind you!) confessed to being a regular twitter user and playing boggle on her iPad in her limited spare time, a penchance for being bossy, gave advice on wearing sunscreen and told of her amazement at watching a flash mob of thousands perform for her at Madrid’s Gay Pride parade last week.
After about 25 minutes, the whirlwind was over, and once I was certain that Kylie had left the building, it was time to tuck into the deliciously healthy barbequed skewers of salmon, chicken and vegetable straight from the Amante grill, washed down with a nerve-soothing glass of sangria before hitting the high road back to town to make a costume change for phase two of Kylie-does-Ibiza at Pacha.
Stay tuned for Miss W’s full report after the show!
THE GOOD: Being one of the only members of the local press in attendance definitely had its perks – for example, when there was time for one last question to Kylie from the audience, having strategically placed one of The Shop team with a microphone next to me, AND having the benefit of being buddies with the lovely Emma B meant Miss W got to do the honours! I should be so lucky indeed…
THE BAD: Is it just me, or did anyone else think it was strange to attend an album launch and NOT receive a physical copy of the CD or any press material? Driving home from Cala Llonga, Miss W had to make do with singing her own karaoke version of All The Lovers, much to the White-ettes dismay…
THE GOSSIP: What, you mean you want MORE gossip after everything leading up to the event? Oh, OK then… I did notice that Kylie seemed to have customised her stunning Givenchy Grecian frock, ditching the floaty, butterfly-like sleeves that were seen on the catwalk version in favour of showing her tanned limbs (if you’ve got it, flaunt it!). Rather than have it altered however, it appeared the petite singer had merely tucked them beneath her arms. A last-minute wardrobe adjustment or merely a case of being thrifty, so she can wear the frock again without being ridiculed for stepping out in the same outfit twice?
