As seminal house music label Defected celebrates 15 years in the tumultuous dance music industry in 2014, head honcho Simon Dunmore reflects on now and then…
“Honestly, when we first started, I didn’t see us having this kind of longevity,” says Defected boss Simon Dunmore, when asked to reflect on the label’s 15-year history. “It was a calculated risk. I wanted to be in control of my own destiny rather than work for a corporation, where you’re dictated by other people’s rules and regulations. Fast forward 15 years and the brand employs over 30 people in its East London offices alone, has a huge social media presence, runs successful parties around the world – including Defected in the House on Tuesday nights at Booom! Ibiza and programming the hot newcomer Glitterbox on Saturday nights in the same venue – and appears regularly on the main stages at major festivals around the globe. A radio show, merchandise range and video channel complement the musical releases and parties – Defected is the full package.
