The next instalment in our all-new healthy living blogs, written by (self-confessed ‘health nut’) Lana Love, owner of Ibiza’s favourite healthy cafe, Passion Cafe.

I’m not sure about you, but when it’s as hot as it is now in Ibiza, my appetite drops and sometimes I ‘forget’ to eat. Which is not a bad thing if you think about your waistline, but I always like to think about giving my body the nutrition that it needs.

When it comes to eating small quantities of food with high nutritional value nothing beats certain superfoods. I’m talking goji berries, cacao, maca, bee products, spirulina, aloe vera, hempseeds, coconut and coconut products and acai.

Superfoods allow us to get more nutrition with less eating. Most of us have had the experience of eating all day long just to keep our blood sugar levels up, yet we receive very little nourishment in the process.

Organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouts, and other healthy plant foods are very important parts of our diet, but they just don’t compare to the nutrient density of superfoods. I eat fruits and vegetables primarily for flavour, fibre and bulk, not for deep levels of nutrition. When it comes to nutrition, only superfoods meet and exceed all requirements.

Superfoods are great antioxidants and have anti—aging properties too. So if you are indulging in all departments while enjoying your Ibiza summer, a ‘superfood detox retox’ is what you need!

Go crazy on snacking on goji berries, add maca to your smoothies, drink shots of aloe vera (add lemon and salt just for the hell of it and pretenc it’s tequila – they are from the same plant after all!), mix your raw cacao with honey and nuts and get the best guilt-free dessert by eating good quality raw honey out of the jar, drink spirulina (block your nose if you have to – I do!), sprinkle hemp seeds on any possible fruit or vegetable salad, cereals and yoghurt. Use coconut oil in cooking, on your skin and drink coconut water any time you get the chance.

The majority of health foods stores in Ibiza now stock most of those superfoods. Raw cacao nibs and powder are a little more difficult to find and you’ll only find acai in a liquid supplement form. Another thing to think about in this heat is protecting our skin and that doesn’t mean just with all kinds of SPF creams (be careful with some sunscreens as they contain chemicals and can do more harm than good to your skin). We need to protect our skin from within and that means eating foods that are rich in certain vitamins and minerals that help build healthy collagen, preserve elastic tissue and restore firmness. Base your diet on organic fruit and vegetables, sardines, tofu, olive oil, flaxseeds, almonds, cottage cheese, organic chicken, lamb, any orange and yellow fruit and veggies rich in the antioxidant betacarotene… and a small glass of red wine too. Bet you like that part, don’t you?
