Fireland with Luciano at Ushuaia: 12/07/09

There’s been someone missing from Miss W’s life in 2009. A person whose face last year was a comforting sight to behold at least once a week, a person who brought me so much happiness and a person I was always guaranteed to have fun with when he was around. Luciano, Luciano…. Where for art thou Luciano?

Tonight, it appears Chilean DJ sensation Luciano will finally be back on my radar, as the hallowed, Totem-pole-guarded gates of Playa D’en Bossa beach club Ushuaia are hosting a very special party featuring the man himself as a very special guest behind the decks…

Once I’d managed to make my way through the dusty, crowded car park at dusk (anyone else feel reminiscent of DC10 days?) and reached the entrance to Ushuaia, I was greeted by a swarm of people all buzzing and milling about excitedly, waiting to be given the go-ahead to stroll down the Ushuaia garden path. Such throes of excitement at a venue’s entrance again reminded me of the good old DC10 days… and as soon as I’d been escorted in via a side entrance (it pays to have good connections! Seriously – that humidity was doing absolutely nothing for my hair) the scene inside was not unlike a grown-up, more mature and slightly more stylish version of my favourite party… but even better, it was in the sand and by the sea. Heavenly.

Out on the decking, the ever-so-stylish La Maison De L’Elephant tables and chairs had been relocated to create a makeshift dance floor around the DJ booth – which by the way has to have one of the best views in Ibiza, straight across the sand dunes and out to the gloriously clear sea – where there were plenty of ladies lingering just waiting to catch a glimpse of this season’s poster boy of house music…

At 10pm when the man of the moment appeared behind the decks – sporting some very Ibiza-like accessories including rosary beads and a sequined shirt – with the glow from his Apple MacBook illuminating his skin like the proverbial knight in shining armour, it could have been a concert for the amount of camera flashes going off – well, it has been a long time between gigs! Thankfully, the frenzy died down after the first song, and Luciano worked into his trademark slow-building, piano laden bass heavy house music set that had people kicking their flip flops off into the sand and dancing with reckless abandonment as if they were at… well, a grown-up DC10 by the sea!

The evening continued on nicely – the perfect party for a hot summer’s night. Amazing music – but never too loud so you could always hold a conversation. Plenty of familiar faces – but never too busy so you could always get to the bar. Above all, a return to that ‘real Ibiza’ atmosphere, dancing beneath the stars with your toes in the sand on a Sunday night. Bliss…

THE LOWDOWN

THE GOOD: While the restaurant was clearly not going to be operational for the duration of this party, the home made ice-cream stand was dishing up plenty of delicious refreshments as were the Sushipoint crew, making the most of a temporary stand on the terrace – I swear, there must be clones of these boys as I seem to see them at every single event I attend!

THE BAD: Those in the ‘VIP’ section roped off on the sand using their ever-so-stylish day beds as podiums… which part of grown up didn’t you understand? Dancing like that is best left to the professionals…

THE GOSSIP: What do you mean there’s no guest list? All the relative propaganda (and I mean that in a nice way!) pertaining to the party insisted this was a strictly invite only affair, however when Miss W arrived it appeared the event was open to all and sundry, with no preferential treatment for the VIPS waiting to get inside, unless of course, you were v-e-r-y lucky and whisked through a side entrance like some certain White-ettes we know…
