A long-standing love affair with travel – and more specifically, traveling to Ibiza – is at the heart of the inspiration for jewellery designer Didi Ilse’s bold and beautiful collections.
“I’ve always collected jewellery, as did my mother,” says the German-born designer. “We’d have ladies coming around to our house with stacks and stacks of jewellery, beautiful earrings and I was just fascinated.” As a teenager she began creating her own pieces using little crystals, before accepting an internship just outside of Dusseldorf and completing a jewellery design course.
Afterwards, London (and Ibiza, where her grandfather had once lived) was calling, where Didi began working on bespoke commissions – usually because someone had fallen in love with the pieces she had made for herself. She also worked in the jewellery department of Harpers Bazaar, which gave her worldwide exposure, then as her evolution as a designer continued, she discovered the delights of Bali, where she began to produce larger collections.
Fusing femininity with edgy, rock and roll type designs, Swarovski crystal jewels and semi-precious beads, Didi Ilse’s collections add a true dash of disco to any Ibiza outfit! “I am constantly inspired,” she says. “When I pick up jewels, when I see things in museums, architecture, nature, images – my creative process never switches off.”
