Health & fitness: Festive season blow-outs!

‘Tis the season to be jolly, also the season to put your feet up, relax and reflect on the year past. Here in Ibiza, many of you probably won’t be spending your time glued to the TV watching re-runs of James Bond films over the Christmas break, but will be partying, and eating, just as hard (if not harder) than your friends and families wherever they may be.

While it’s great to overindulge and relax, the astounding fact is that the average adult consumes somewhere in the region of an extra 6000 calories over the Christmas period! That’s a lot of turkey, mince pies and mulled wine, and a lot of time on the running machine to burn it off.

As always, the key to avoiding this kind of calorie calamity is moderation. It’s not just the traditional Christmas dinner that’s packing the pounds: there’s those extra nights out – let’s face it, NYE, Pacha and DC10 are just days away – and all those drinks and snacks that get offered around, not to mention the temptation of those family sized chocolate boxes we got as gifts… it’s amazing just how fast an entire chocolate orange can disappear!

If there is one time of the year though when you’re truly justified on stuffing yourself, this is it
, and in reality, a blip like this isn’t likely to dramatically affect your weight over the medium to long term. You’re probably just feeling more sluggish, from of all the extra food and late nights at this point. We’re fortunate in Ibiza that the weather is mild around this time of year, so why not take some long walks and enjoy the outdoors to balance out any predilection for over eating or drinking?

The days between Christmas and New Year are great for thinking about what you want to get out of the coming year, and if you have overindulged, why not make the commitment to enjoy it until New Year’s Day (or even January 2!), then hit a healthy eating and exercise routine to get you to the place you want to be at. After all, it might be the festive party season now, but the summer party season isn’t that far away either.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone from M Wellness!
