Experienced acupuncturist and massage practitioner Santosh Kaur of Akeso Acupuncture always felt an affinity with alternative treatments and therapies, having grown up with a traditional Indian background and then discovering Chinese medicine via her training in martial arts and Qi Gong.
“I didn’t really like going to the doctor when I was young,” she says. “We used medicine in our food every day – only it wasn’t called medicine, it was just a way of life, so I was always really interested in that side of things, and alternative therapies. I started to practice martial arts in 2000, and was also getting some ideas from that… and before I knew it I was at Westminster doing a degree in Chinese Medicine Acupuncture!”
Today she brings her wealth of experience and knowledge to the Hot Yoga Ibiza studios, treating a variety of treatments and medical conditions in addition to soothing sore muscles or simply offering a deeply relaxing experience.
“I first came to Ibiza in 2010, but I’d always resisted it – I had an image that it was just the party island,” she says. “But when I actually experienced the island for myself, saw how picturesque and scenic it was and discovered how much healing was going on here, it inspired me to come and set up my practice here.”
Offering a combination of treatments and therapies, including her specialties of acupuncture and traditional Tui Na massage, Santosh treats every single patient and their concerns individually – there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution in her stylish treatment room. “I don’t use any electrical equipment or modern techniques in my treatments,” Santosh says. “I use traditional knowledge, drawing on Chinese medicine that is over 5000 years old. I simply use my hands and the knowledge I have built up over the past 15 years to help people – and we’ve had fantastic patient outcomes since I started here in 2012.”
Acupuncture aims to treat the whole person, in addition to specific symptoms, plus maintain good health, improve all-over wellbeing and relax the body and mind. Tui Na Massage is one of the earliest treatment methods used by humankind and it differs from other forms of massage in that it is used to treat specific illnesses of an internal nature as well as musculoskeletal ailments.
“I treat people with a wide variety of clinical complaints, from musculoskeletal pain and degeneration of vertebral discs to polycystic ovaries. Some people come for a one-off treatment – which is great – but then I find they come back again because they realise the overall benefits afterwards.”
Currently completing her Masters Degree in Chinese Herbal Medicine, Santosh encourages anyone with complaints, difficulties and concerns to get in touch for a free consultation. “There are so many easy and cost effective ways to sort out concerns using Chinese medicine without having to go under the knife,” she says.
