The warrior sequence cultivates strength, courage and a brave heart. I like to think of it as a direct reflection of life and it’s daily challenges. These postures as a sequence are a wonderful reminder to ground through your roots and stay strong – ready to face anything the day brings. Just like a warrior.
It’s very simple and consists of four standing poses:
• Warrior One
• Warrior Two
• Reverse Warrior
• Side Angle Pose.
Yet of course, the sequence itself is a challenge… when you hold each posture during the sequence for around 30 seconds to one minute (slowly increasing as your body builds strength), the first thing to go is the legs – the thighs begin to shake. Our immediate reaction is to give up and our brain goes into survival mode as the body feels discomfort – the mind is absorbed in escape strategies… when really all we need to do – just like in life – is breath through the chaos.
The warrior poses also force us to look at things which challenge us and once we overcome the desire to ‘run’, we know we can handle anything which life throws our way. So we learn to observe without rash reaction – to stick to our beliefs and what makes our hearts beat – even when all we want to do is run and hide! Facing fear and trusting that love is waiting on the other side for us. Realising that ‘home’ resides in comfort and discomfort, and that mixture makes us who we are.
So aim true. Be bold, live loud, explore fearlessly and love without bounds … and dance when you can!
