Chickens, ducks, rabbits and an enormous black pig are the welcoming committee when you arrive at Can Sivan – an ecological farm in the heart of Ibiza’s countryside, just outside of San Rafael.
It was just a year and a half ago that Ida and Omer Sivan relocated their young family from Israel to Ibiza, with the idea to get back to nature, spend more time together as a family and live a more relaxed, healthy lifestyle. Having first discovered Ibiza five years prior, on a holiday to celebrate their 10th anniversary, the couple fell in love, feeling an instant connection with the island.
The biggest challenge according to Ida – a former senior physicist who spent nine hours a day cooped up in a cold, air conditioned office all year round – was ‘reinventing’ themselves, in order to obtain the lifestyle they so desired. “My husband had a background in agriculture and livestock, and I had a little experience in farming from my time in a kibbutz. We had a house with a large garden in Israel where we grew some of our own food, though what we were growing wasn’t really ecological at that point, so we thought this would be a good starting point.”
