Anyone who knows me will tell you I love a spot of shopping. A little cruise down the high street (well, as much as we have one in Ibiza). A lengthy peruse of the weekend markets. A drive up north to unearth artisan creations. Rifling and sifting through the junk in charity stores searching for hidden fashion treasures. It’s also true that I tend to use my iPad mostly for online shopping (because the laptop is for work of course!). I could spend weeks on end shopping in Ibiza – and let me tell you, if I didn’t have a full time job, I probably would!
But as much as I LOVE shopping for myself (and my cats), I truly love, love, LOVE shopping for gifts. There’s no better buzz than carefully mapping out a gift shopping map, taking in the sights and delights of Ibiza’s shopping districts (and yes, there are multiple) and coming home with arms full of pretty paper bags full of, well, STUFF, for the ones you love (and maybe a few things you’ve found for yourself along the way). So you can just imagine how much I love Christmas!
Now the festive season is here, I’m carefully preparing my lists (and checking them twice), like Santa’s little Balearic helper and I’m ready to hit the island’s road in search of the perfect gifts. Some of them will be posted abroad, to my friends and family that I won’t have a chance to see over the Christmas period, and others will be personally delivered – and all of them will be wrapped with a military like precision honed over many years spent working in a department store in my youth (before they had generic gift bags and still used ribbons and non-branded wrapping paper).
One thing each gift will have in common (aside from the expert wrapping that is), is that they are all unique to Ibiza. Something you won’t see every day, something Santa won’t leave under the tree and something you definitely can’t find on any old high street, in any other flea market or on any other website. Because I love my island, and I love supporting our designers, brands, jewelers and stores.
So if you’re looking for a little inspiration for the Ibiza lover in your life, please allow me to give you a little Christmas shopping tour of the island. And remember, if you’re not lucky enough to be on the white isle this festive season, you can still shop for Ibiza goodies online on the White Ibiza Shop while there’s still time to have them delivered direct to your door. Bring on the buzz!
FOR THE HOME
OK, so first and foremost, you’re going to need a tree to put the presents under, and that tree is going to need some decorations! You’ll find trees of all shapes and sizes at the Christmas Market on Vara de Rey, alongside tinsel, trinkets and baubles, but for truly special decorations, be sure to pass by La Galeria Elefante on the road to Santa Gertrudis (my favourite place to shop by an open fire), plus Magazin and Lotus on the road to Santa Eulalia… your very own Ibiza Christmas wonderland awaits!
FOR THE JEWELLERY LOVERS
Ibiza is home to a long list of fine jewelers, many of them crafting one-of-a-kind creations that will guarantee a gasp of joy when opened on Christmas morning. Take the trip to the north of the island, where you’ll find the gorgeous Natasha Collis Store & Studio, for handmade silver and gold fine jewellery pieces in a unique and elegant style. Alternatively JOY Jewellery offer an amazing range of ready-to-wear collections (via the White Ibiza Boutique) in addition to bespoke pieces – contact JOY directly to find out more. For the younger, more fashion conscious chicas, check out Sienna Bloom – a cool new range making waves on the island and available in many stores and online (via White Ibiza). I also love customizing Circa Ibiza vintage locket combinations – available in La Galeria Elefante.
FOR THE FASHIONISTAS
While many Ibiza brands and stores close their boutique doors for the winter, if you know where to look you can find wonderful one-off pieces and Ibiza style creations. Victoria Ibiza’s dedicated showroom in La Galeria Elefante is like one of the most beautiful, bohemian walk-in wardrobes on the island, and is great for both big gifts and stocking fillers alike. Ibiza is also famous for its hippy-style leather goods – from belts and boots to handbags – and the best place to get an overview of everything on offer is the Las Dalias Christmas Market, where plenty of one-of-a-kind finds await.
FOR THE BOOKWORMS
La Galeria Elefante boasts an array of Ibiza-themed or inspired books by local authors, including the awesome My Ibiza & Formentera Guide by Hjordis Fogelberg Jensen and photography tome Portraits by Jerome, and Ibiza Living by Genevive Scholten among others. The perfect stocking fillers, guaranteed to be a talking point for the festive season, and to look fabulous on the table forever…
FOR IBIZA LOVERS
Sometimes, there’s just no beating a good old fashioned Ibiza souvenir. Some of our favourites are the pretty little pots of Sal de Ibiza – now available in different flavours – or mini bottles of hierbas. For the connoisseurs, there’s Ibizkus or Can Rich wines, and now you’ll also find chocolate, nuts and more – perfect for snacks on Christmas day. Your best bet is to peruse your local corner store, or try the big fruit and veggie markets on the main roads to Santa Gertrudis or Santa Eulalia – the best source for home-grown (literally) gifts.
FOR THE KIDS
Did you know there’s an entire room dedicated to the little ones at La Galeria Elefante? From classic toys and quirky fun stocking fillers, to books, colouring pencils, stickers and clothes, I can actually spend hours in there trying to fill the littlest slots on my Christmas shopping list (warning: you may come back with something for yourself too.)
FOR SOMETHING TRULY UNIQUE
There’s just always someone on the list that is too hard to buy for, whether they have everything or are just plain fussy. One of my favourite things to buy – ok, well I’ve only done it twice but both times were winners – is to arrange a personalised consultation for a tattoo with Inkadelic, Ibiza’s number one tattoo studio. The gift that keeps on giving – forever!
