Miss W’s blog: Easter in Ibiza

Does anyone else feel like the Easter long weekend has crept up too quickly? I just don’t feel ready… yet! Easter is a lot earlier than usual this year, which could explain why I’m shocked by the traffic that’s on our roads already, I’m surprised by the sheer volume of people traipsing the shops in Ibiza town and I’m a little overwhelmed by the fact (drum roll please) that all the best beach restaurants are open again!

I feel like those last wonderful weeks of winter have just flown by, and what feels like ‘my’ island, once again becomes ‘our’ island. I’m not ready to say goodbye to tranquil nights in Ibiza town, beautifully misty mornings, intimate soirees where you know everyone in the room, lazy market strolls in the soft, not-too-hot winter sun… I could go on!

But then again… To tell you the truth, maybe I am ready for five days of fun, sun, chocolate and fluffy bunnies. It’s such a busy period in the lead up to the summer behind the scenes at White Ibiza, and so a little excuse to kick back and enjoy the island’s sights and delights before the really serious work of the summer season starts is very welcome.

That’s right, I said five days! Here in Ibiza, the fiestas (by this I mean public or bank holidays, though technically there will be a whole lot of parties too) start tomorrow! What better reason to come to the island for a pre-season extended stay, than a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday that are chock-full of openings, special events, lunches, cocktails, dinners and dancing? It’s like a mini-preview of the summer ahead…

In actual fact, the action really starts tonight (so can we call it six days?), as both Pacha and Sankeys open their doors for special parties – the fourth anniversary of Jean Claude Ades’ Be Crazy event and the underground favourite Unusual Suspects respectively. May as well party hop and go to both – after all, no one has to wake up early tomorrow morning!

Then after a long and lazy lie in, I’m heading up north to San Carlos to check out the Easter Edition of the Las Dalias Hippy Market – I wonder if I’ll find myself a fluffy bunny there? Somehow I don’t think hippies and Cadbury Crème Eggs mix so I won’t hold my breath for any chocolate goodies. Later on, the opening party at The Harbour Club in Talamanca should be in full swing, and I’m finally going to get the chance to check out the all new Passion San Jose as it opens for dinner.

Good Friday features my absolute favourite Easter tradition of all – the religious procession through Ibiza town, starting at sunset from the Cathedral in Dalt Vila, when religious effigies are slowly carried by sombre procession participants in traditional Catholic robes, accompanied by drumming and lit by candles through the streets of Ibiza town, stopping at every church. It’s serious, it’s a little bit spooky, but I have to say it is spectacular. Every year it never ceases to make my jaw drop. It also goes right past my house, so I have a front row view from the terrace! Then later on it’s back to Ibiza style partying, at Pacha, for People Like Us with FUSE’s Enzo Siragusa. Talk about a contrast!

More sleeping in ensues on Saturday morning – perhaps a little sunbathe on said roof terrace to try and get a head start on a summer tan, before checking out Food Music & Fashion at Aubergine Ibiza, where iconic Ibiza fashion label World Family Ibiza will unveil their new boutique to the world. If I have any energy left (I’m out of practice, remember), I’m going to swing by Playa d’en Bossa and visit the Keep on Dancing crew at Lips Reartes. And those with more stamina than me will no doubt be doing the club hop between Vintage at Pacha and Sankeys Sabados even later still.

The reason I’m saving myself is because the ‘island’s unofficial’ season opening takes place this Sunday at Atzaro. Fiesta de la Primavera ensures everyone who’s anyone – and quite literally, their dogs – comes out of hibernation to attend. Markets, food, fashion, music, art – it all comes together, complete with colourful flowers and that unmistakeable scent of orange blossom as you arrive to Atzaro… the sights, sounds and smells of spring are here.

For me, Monday is all about binge-watching box sets in my bed and scoffing my face with organic chocolate from Passion Pantry in the absence of Crème Eggs. I’m still a little sad that the Ibiza shops aren’t overflowing with chocolate bunnies and eggs… but then again, with summer being just around the corner, perhaps it’s a good thing?
