Jean Claude Ades – 24 Hours in Ibiza

Be Crazy curator and resident DJ Jean Claude Ades first came to Ibiza in 1994, a rite of passage holiday organised by a publisher from Warner Chappell Music. “It was the beginning of August and we stayed in Hotel Montesol for two weeks – two weeks of no sleep – the walls were so thin we could hear every scooter, and of course we were going out every night!” he says. Upon returning to Germany where he was promoting events, house parties and running a club, Jean Claude explains that the trip opened his mind, from the way clubs promoted their nights to the music being played, giving him a lot of inspiration

After many years of holidaying in Ibiza, experiencing the music on the dancefloor and honing his DJ craft, Jean Claude started to become a regular player on the DJ scene in 2008, making the island his permanent home. He played at luxury beach club Blue Marlin Ibiza and San Rafael hotspot El Ayoun, moving onto Pacha and then his own residency at Lio. Today, Jean Claude’s own soulful and sexy house music party, Be Crazy, is in its fifth season – taking place on Thursday nights at Lio.

“I love the balance Ibiza gives me by living here during the winter,” he says. “After crazy weekends of touring in other countries, I find a great balance; it brings me down and it’s grounding. No traffic, great weather – it’s 20 degrees and I can still have lunch on the beach. It’s a healthy time to focus on myself, music and production.”

What’s in your suitcase?
USB sticks, laptop, headphones, aspirin and all my toiletries in reduced size. Even when I go for three to four days I am good at managing everything clothes wise. Always hand luggage – I hate waiting for luggage!

What’s the first thing you do when you arrive on the island?
Go home! Sometimes if I arrive early on Sunday evening I go straight to have a late lunch somewhere on the beach. I love Sa Caleta, La Escollera or Yemanja.

Who do you spend time with on the island?
My wife and my Labrador Lily. I have so many people visiting for holidays, so I try to mix it up and see everyone but sometimes it’s impossible. I have friends on the island, but I see them more during the winter as summer is so busy for everyone.

Anything special that you make a point of doing when you’re here?
I have a membership at Ibiza Gran Hotel so I try to go there as much as I can. They have a nice terrace, a pool on the rooftop where I like to chill out and have a drink. I train in the gym, I use the spa – this is my balance, what brings me back to life.

What’s your favourite part of the island?
Cap Martinet, Talamanca and the Marina are the places I feel most comfortable. In a different direction, I also love Es Cubells.

What’s your ultimate Ibiza track?
DJ Rolando – Knights of the Jaguar.

Best Ibiza memory?
I would have to say at Tagomago, a private island close to the north of the island. It was a private party that went for 24 hours, and I played 16 of those hours…

Last summer, we teamed up with @purehouseibiza to host a series of alfresco dinners in their beautiful San Jose surroundings and now we’re counting down the days until they reopen and we can revisit the beautiful hotel once more. With only four rooms on the property – now’s the time to book your room so you don’t miss out.

The eternal charm of Ibiza’s villages never fails to win our hearts. Whitewashed walls, rustic wooden doorways, ancient water wells, pretty little crosses and beautiful homes are tucked away within lush forests in the centre of the island in places like San Rafael and Santa Gertrudis. Now’s the perfect time to take a meandering drive through the dusty country roads – there’s no traffic to stop you pulling over when you see an Instagram-worthy moment!

Scottish-born Deborah Christie’s passion for her work in wellness has seen her work across the globe in places as diverse as California, Australia and all across the UK, eventually gaining a teaching degree and going on to become a top lecturer for global skincare experts Dermalogica. Now she’s got her feet firmly planted in Ibiza and heads up a team of mobile @ibiza_beautyandmassage experts all year round.

It may look like sushi, but the creamy cashew-cream filled centre of this vegan, plant-based roll at @wildbeets will make you forget anything you ever thought about Japanese traditions. Our blogger @misswibiza – a self-confessed carnivore who will do anything to avoid eating veggies – cites this dish as one of the best things she’s ever eaten in her life. Now that’s a review we can’t ignore.

When interior design expert Jurjen Van Hulzen dreamed up his ideal Ibiza showroom, he created it around an imagined couple – youthful, active, global travellers and design lovers who might live or visit Ibiza regularly. You’ll find @ibizainteriors on the road from Ibiza to San Juan, where you can meet Jurjen and his team of architects and interior designers or simply snap up some new furniture or décor.

Each of the nine beautiful bedrooms at @can_pere_sord has its own unique appeal – some have hot tubs, others private terraces and twin or super-king beds – but all are united by rustic beamed ceilings, huge, custom-made beds, and a sense of home that seeps up from the foundations. It’s one of Ibiza’s best-kept secrets to this day.

S’Estanyol has been a local’s favourite cove for decades – its secluded location and slightly bumpy access road making it a refuge from visiting tourists. These days it’s less of a secret and more of an icon, not to mention an all-year round destination thanks to hip beach restaurant @cala.bonita.ibiza.

Wine, wine and more wine. Sake and artisan beer and champagne – oh my! @vinoycoibiza is your one-stop drink shop in Ibiza and in the winter, on Friday and Saturday nights, they add amazing bistro style food to their offering too. It’s definitely not your average wine boutique!

You have 24 hours on the island. Tell us your favourite places to…

Ibiza Gran Hotel has an amazing brunch, and it’s so convenient. Heladería Sant Jordi for fresh juices and nice breakfasts or Passion.

El Chiringuito. I love that place! Or at home – I love to stay home and cook or grill on the barbeque when I am not working! I have a great roof top terrace.

Macao Café in Santa Gertrudis. Can Balafia if I feel like eating meat or I head to Marina Botafoch, where there are lots of little places like Trattoria del Mar or El Giardinetto… and Ricky’s Pizza in Figueretes – we just discovered it – I ate there three times last week! Actually, my favourite dish is a half roasted chicken and a really good Italian pizza.

I don’t really go just for drinks, I prefer to go for dinner at smaller places like KM5 – I am good friends with Josh, the owner there and afterwards we will have some drinks and dance. There is a little club inside that we go to.

I like smaller venues like HEART Ibiza on a Sunday, for Acid Sundays. It’s kind of chill, you can find your own space in the club away from the crowds, you can chill on the terrace and it’s not too dressy.

Es Torrent – the bay is amazing, it’s not too overcrowded, the food is amazing at the restaurant.

Formentera on the boat!

When you go to Salinas and pass Sa Trinxa, there are about ten to 15 little bays – if you keep going further it’s definitely a place where you can find your quiet spot. Especially off season, there is no one around and it is away from it all. You can even swim naked.

I like to go to BEACHOUSE Ibiza on a Sunday, it’s a nice atmosphere, very chilled – it’s different from last year. It kind of becomes a journey, I’ll go there for a drink, then I check out HEART Ibiza, and sometimes I head to Pacha afterwards. All in one night – and then it’s done for a week! Of course, I love Thursdays at Lio – the atmosphere, the beautiful crowd, stunning venue and the music is a really nice experience.
