Featured project – Can Selva by Urban Village Design
Developer and interior architect Cate Watts works her magic on her first project on the white isle.
This gorgeous four-bedroom Santa Gertrudis contemporary finca is the first of two properties being developed and built by Urban Village Design in Ibiza. Founded by Cate Watts – who specialises in interior architecture, rather than interior design or architecture individually – each Urban Design Village project is completely different. “I never build two houses the same,” she explains of her philosophy. “There is always something new I want to try or which reflects the clients’ tastes.”
The plot came with a licence to build a house and Cate redesigned the property within its footprint, completely changing the character and feel of the house. “For me, the space, light and textures from inside the house are just as important as how the house looks from the outside,” she says.
Step inside Can Selva and you’ll instantly feel at home. While reflecting the high-quality island standards for sleek, modern new builds, the finca maintains a feeling of authenticity through the materials used in both construction and styling – the very epitome of bohemian modernity.
Outside, the old mountain terrace walls were restored with Ibiza stone and additional walls added in the traditional style, to create fig and lemon tree terraces while lavender and rosemary meadows circle around the house. In order to soften the lines of the new house, Cate designed flowerbeds with meadow-like flowers right up to the windows and terraces, however the courtyard is a more formal garden space and provides a sheltered spot to spend a beautiful summer evening.
