Great minds think alike – Pikes meets Groucho
This summer’s union between two goliaths of fame, notability and louche glamour, The Groucho Club and luxury boutique hotel Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes Hotel, was a match made in heaven. The two iconic venues – renowned for their decadence and bohemian rhapsody – joined forces in Ibiza for a four-day pop-up celebration, honouring gastronomy, music, art and culture.
Celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, original arts and media private members’ club, The Groucho Club, is a hotbed of UK creative talent, old and new. Originally started by a group of publishers as an alternative to stuffy gentleman’s clubs, The Groucho Club opened with three bars, two restaurants and 20 bedrooms in London’s Soho in 1985. Since then a variety of raucous and famous interludes have happened behind the hallowed doors – most notably, U2’s Bono singing Merry Christmas to Bill Clinton, Damien Hirst putting his £20,000 Turner Prize cheque behind the bar, only to be thrown out later for unforgivably bad behaviour, and Courtney Love propositioning Janet Street Porter. Guests have included the late Princess Diana, all of the fashion glitterati for Stella McCartney’s 40th birthday and current members such as rock royalty Noel Gallagher, quirky comedian Noel Fielding, and pop princess Lilly Allen.
Pikes Hotel has a similarly glittered (and littered) past; the iconic scene of Wham’s 1983 Club Tropicana video, the infamous location for Freddie Mercury’s 41st birthday party, the Balearic home away from home for Julio Iglesias in his heyday and host of a revolving door of famous guests including Naomi Campbell, Grace Jones, Bon Jovi, Kylie Minogue and Spandau Ballet. Sadly, the renowned hotel started to fall into disrepair at the turn of the century, but was thankfully snapped up and restored under the watchful eye of Andy McKay and Dawn Hindle, the partnership powerhouse behind the Ibiza Rocks brand, given a respectful and fitting upgrade into the quirky, eclectic and hedonistic hotspot it is today – Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes Hotel.
