Ibiza style: Cotton Beach Club – One stop style shop
The Cotton brand has established itself as a market leader in many elements of Ibiza lifestyle since it first opened its doors five years ago. As a beach club, it has flourished – now one of the island’s must-visit destination for glamorous beach days, luxurious lunches, sunset cocktails and alfresco dinner. In terms of fine dining, with the revamped Cotton Lounge Club menu, it is truly a shining star on the island’s gastronomic map. And when it comes to health, fitness and nutrition, Cotton Fitness Club and Cotton Retreats are already established as the island’s number one location.
Within the original Cotton Beach Club, another arm of the brand has quietly achieved cult-like status over the course of the summer season. We’re talking, of course, about Cotton Boutique – the restaurant’s chic standalone fashion store adjacent to the entrance and stairs that lead to the upper terrace. In 2017, well-known and respected island fashion designer and buyer Marinela Cifteli (of Kurru Kurru fame) took the reins of the store, introducing an all-new aesthetic and ethos that has seen visiting fashionistas flocking to the space for island-inspired retail therapy every chance they get.
Over the last 13 years, Marinela has firmly entrenched herself in the island’s fashion scene. Designing her own international label plus running multiple stores across the island has given her a true insider’s insight into what island women and holidaymakers want when it comes to fashion of all styles and figures of all shapes. Beachwear and bikinis, resortwear and accessories, party frocks and elegant ensembles for weddings, parties and all occasions – though the Cotton Boutique may be petite in size, Marinela’s expert buying skills means it excels in suiting all styles, budgets and figure shapes. You know what they say – good things come in small packages!
Cotton Beach Club co-owner (and very fashionable woman herself) Merete Marstrander says it was a no-brainer when it came to putting Marinela in charge of the boutique this summer. “She is simply the most stylish woman I know!” she says. “She knows the island, she knows women and she knows fashion. It just made perfect sense.” For Marinela, the feeling was mutual. “I know Cotton and I love it – I live nearby so I always came here all the time,” she explains. “It is one of the most international places I have ever seen in Ibiza, and after studying the fashion and shopping habits of clients, I am able to curate the collections to suit our clientele.”
These collections encompass everything one needs for an Ibiza holiday and beyond, including pieces that can be taken home and styled to suit life in the city. Marinela herself takes an ethical approach to fashion – with her own label, Kurru Kurru (also available in Cotton Beach Club) she opts for recycled leather for trims and uses vegan dyes for her beautiful prints. “People sometimes forget the skin is an organ,” she says. “We absorb everything, including chemicals that are used to print fashion, into the skin. A lot of our clients are requesting alternatives, and while it will take time to educate everyone, this is at the heart of what we are trying to do with Kurru Kurru.”
This ethos follows through with many of the collections showcased in the store, including Fair Trade accessories, sustainable brands such as Friendly Hunting and products that give profits back to villages in Asia or Africa where they have been created. High fashion, too, has its place in the boutique including on-trend brands scuh as Lazul, Evarae and Sumarie plus hand-picked luxury jewellery designers hailing from LA to Ibiza and beyons. The final piece of the puzzle comes direct from Cotton HQ – a high quality, ultra-soft range of t-shirts for men and women that epitomise that laidback, beach club style. Luxurious linen caps complete the top-to-toe look (ideal for a day on the beach or boat), allowing lovers of Cotton Beach Club to take a stylish piece of the brand home with them.
Collections change regularly, due to the fast-paced nature of the fashion world, meaning islanders and visitors alike have all the more reason to shop at Cotton, my dears…
