Ibiza style: Activated charcoal – The skin detoxer
Laura Boland of Glam Ibiza has advice for those readers who have ignored all of her previous advice on removing make-up after a night out, blasting skin on Salinas all summer and drinking way too many cocktails! She did try to warn you… but all is not lost.
The latest ‘it’ product in the beauty world is going to save your day and help you face autumn with clear looking, fresh skin. Activated Charcoal is everywhere at the moment, from celebrity’s faces and magazine features to the bathroom shelves of those in-the-know! It promises to zap spots, detoxify and minimise pores and give skin and hair a beautiful shine – a post-summer detox that doesn’t invove dieting.
Activated charcoal has been exposed to certain gases, which doubles its absorption properties, making it effective at absorbing and trapping toxins. Ever heard that eating charcoal is good for a hangover? There is actually some truth in this since the charcoal attaches itself to chemicals – think of it as a sponge absorbing all of last night’s bad behaviour! In terms of the skin, when oil and dirt in your pores come into contact with charcoal, they stick to it and then get washed away when rinsed with water.
For cloudy, dull and lack lustre skin – aka two weeks on holiday in Ibiza skin – apply a charcoal mask once a week. Be careful not to over do it, as it’s powerful stuff! Try Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask – this is free of parabens, sulphates and phthalates, perfect for those who want to keep things as natural as possible. For acne prone and congested skins, try Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Mask. Very aptly named, this really rescuesangry, toxic skin. Containing Chilean Wild Mint to refine pores and Niacinamide to reduce congestion and inflammation, apply two to three times a week until the skin begins to improve.
Charcoal isn’t only limited to facial products. Try Yes To Tomatoes Activated Charcoal Soap Bar. Use this on areas of congestion caused by layers of thick sun block, such as the back or chest. Think also of your hair, especially if it has taken a beating being parched in the sun all day and GHD-d to death every night. Apotheke Charcoal Shampoo neutralises acid and absorbs impurities, whilst sweet orange and cedar wood hydrate.
Finally, for the ultimate clean, sparkling body part, try a Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co Charcoal Toothbrush! The bristles of the toothbrush are infused with charcoal and prevent bacteria growing on the brush and blasts bad breath at the same time.
My list goes on… charcoal deodorant, charcoal toothpaste, charcoal facial sponges – charcoal looks like its sticking around. If you only try one product, try a charcoal mask and I promise you will be impressed by how glowing and clear you skin looks afterwards, ready to re-tox on your first post-Ibiza night out back home!
