Ibiza style: Rincón by Tara Matthews – The corner store with style
Stylishly set on a sun-drenched corner in the stylish seaside area of Marina Botafoch, Rincón by Tara Matthews is an all-new pop-up boutique introducing a carefully curated range of high quality international brands to the island for women, men and children alike.
A collaboration between luxury swimwear designer Tara Matthews and her best friend, long-term island dweller (with exceptional taste herself!) Céline Nguyen, the original inspiration for the store came about due to a lack of availability on the island. As many a style-seeking island resident knows, shopping for high quality, accessibly priced fashion on the island can be difficult, due to most seasonal stores penchant for crochet, hippy-style threads or the alternative, cheap high-street knock-offs that don’t last longer than a few washes.
After Céline found the perfect pop-up location in the heart of the bustling Marina Botafoch district, the duo set to work building a portfolio of luxurious brands suited to the island lifestyle. “We tried to find brands that weren’t available in Ibiza,” Tara explains of the Rincón by Tara Matthews concept. “We brought in things from all over the world – we did our best to be different.”
With a feeling of a luxury surf shack, the collections housed within the intimate boutique are a testament to Tara’s global fashion connections (honed over many years spent living abroad as the daughter of a UN diplomat), her own beach to bar aesthetic and a refusal to compromise on quality. “The idea is that you can come here and get something from the morning until 3am,” says Tara. “We have everything from loungewear and swimwear through to sparkly dresses and heels for evening.”
Star brands include Tara Matthews swimwear (obviously! Read more about the brand here) and beachwear, plus a selection of her dresses and pants that can be easily taken from city to island, made with 100% natural fabrics. Amazing mini-neoprene wetsuits by Cynthia Rowley and Cetus Biarritz cater to the more sporty aesthetic, while highly covetable beach towels by Sun of a Beach are the ideal seaside accessory.
Style up your beach ensemble with crocheted bags designed exclusively for the boutique by Olivia Dar, beach bags emblazoned with iconic prints of Ibiza, Corsica and California by Lucky Bag or pom-pom embellished sandals by Greek designer Elina Linedarki, luxury sandals by Visconti de Roux and Portuguese designer Alamada Turquesa. Top it all off with hip shades by Oliver Peoples, TD by Tom Davies, Illestteva and See Concept Paris.
Suited to the famed Ibiza nightlife are incredible glittering clutch bags, heels, ankle boots by Mo Helmi, with very limited production runs meaning you may be one of only five people in the world to own them (“They are so comfy you can dance all night long in them,” says Tara). Jewellery ranges from ethnic inspired tasseled bangles by Norwegian designer Marte Firsnes to the rockstar statement rings of French jeweler Melissa Devaux. Understanding what lies beneath is also important, Rincón by Tara Matthews also stocks sassy and feelgood Hanky Panky lingerie.
For guys, laidback surfwear and casualwear comes courtesy of the super popular California-based brand Aviator Nation, plus UV t-shirts and quick dry shorts by Musto Sailing, with trainers and trucker caps lining the shelves to complete the look. You’ll even spot a few surfboards – custom made by a bespoke shaper in the north of Spain, and hand painted by tattoo artist Albano Fortuna – for those rare, yet amazing days the island serves up a swell.
Homewares in the shape of curved metal fish from Mati Gallery in Santorini and a whimsical coffee table book by illustrator and artist Fleur Arnaud complete the collections. Whether you’re looking for a fashion fix, a glamorous gift or a complete wardrobe overhaul, Rincón by Tara Matthews is guaranteed to satisfy every shopper looking for a fashion fix – whether holidaymakers fresh off their yacht to Formentera or local fashionistas looking to stand out from the crowds.
As for the name? For those who don’t know, ‘rincon’ in Spanish translates to corner, inspired by the store’s frontline location, though this is hardly your average ‘corner store’! Rather, Céline and Tara saw it as an opportunity to creat a luxury corner store, where you could find a little bit of everything… Et Voila! Rincón by Tara Matthews was born.
