Ottolenghi at Atzaró – A culinary first for Ibiza

Ibiza gourmands, take note – all gastronomic roads lead to the bucolic countryside of San Lorenzo this Saturday evening, where globally revered chef, author and restaurateur Yotam Ottolenghi hosts a very special sharing dinner in collaboration with Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel. An intimate, community-style event designed to tantalise the tastebuds and transport diners into a world of edible wonder, Ottolenghi at Atzaró takes place within the glorious Atzaró Vegetable Garden from 8pm – the magnificent three-hectare organic garden providing the perfect backdrop for the five-course feast curated by Yotam himself.

When it comes to cuisine, the chef-patron of the Ottolenghi Deli and Restaurant Group is a true trailblazer, having hugely influenced the way much of the world cooks and eats ever since he opened the doors to his very first deli and bakery in 2002 and launched his first cookbook (of many) in 2008. His philosophy is based on vibrant and colourful dishes, bold flavour combinations, and innovative use of herbs and spices. Television specials, more cookbooks, a regular column in The Guardian, and a string of successful restaurants and delis across London made Ottolenghi a household name, and the culinary phenomenon known as ‘the Ottolenghi effect’ has significantly shifted modern gastronomy via an adventurous foray into a vegetable-centric approach to cooking and eating. And now, it is the chef’s time to shine here in Ibiza with his first ever island event, Ottolenghi at Atzaró.

Arrive at Ottolenghi at Atzaró at 8pm to enjoy welcome drinks and live music as the setting sun casts a golden tint across the charming walkways, terraces and meticulously tended organic vegetable patches of the Atzaró Vegetable Garden – the authentic heart of Ibiza. Bright pink bougainvillea dusts the vistas and the scent of night jasmine drifts past long wooden tables shaded by olive, palm and pine trees, and beautifully set with crisp linens, flickering candles and rustic, natural decoration. Here, guests will take their seats – bookings for groups of four or six are recommended for easy conversation and sharing over the course of the night – as Ottolenghi himself will welcome you to the event and introduce you to the evening’s concept.

Ottolenghi at Atzaró features a five-course, sharing-style dinner that showcases a harmonious blend of Ottolenghi’s unmistakable style, the organic bounty sourced directly from the Atzaró Vegetable Garden, just metres away from your table, and non-vegetable elements that have been sourced locally. Expect dishes that dance with delight across the palate, each moment carefully crafted to pay homage to the vibrant spirit of Ibiza and Ottolenghi’s Israeli roots, as the chef and his talented team brings the carefully considered menu – created just for this event – to life. A pairing of local wines has been selected to complement the cuisine, creating the perfect union of Ibiza flavours and Ottolenghi’s iconic style.

The first taste of virtuosity arrives as honeyed, caramelised onions doused in a fresh herb salsa and served with crudité from Atzaró Vegetable Garden, served alongside grilled pimientos de padrón with muhammara – roasted red pepper dip – topped with walnuts and a sticky pomegranate molasses. Ibiza’s world-famous tomatoes (also from the Atzaró Vegetable Garden) are served with confit herbs and a scattering of sesame while a black lime focaccia is a tangy moment ensconced within the bounciness of homemade bread. As the wine and conversation flow at Ottolenghi at Atzaró, diners are not only seduced by the flavours of each dish but by the soft melodies of Flamenco guitar travelling across the gardens, a perfectly calibrated collaboration of the senses.

Main dishes at Ottolenghi at Atzaró present a wonderful melange of flavours. Roasted aubergine comes with feta cream, chermoula and orange; chargrilled zucchini is layered with Manchego cheese, steeped in burnt butter and sprinkled with pine nuts. A tender lamb shawarma appears with pita pockets slathered in sumac tahini, stuffed with mint salad, and dusted with pomegranate arils. The white flesh of celeriac arrives on skewers basted in a fragrant chilli oil accompanied by a refreshing herb salad and toum – an Israeli relative of alioli. To end the meal, Ottolenghi’s fabled pavlova reflects the colours of sunset at Atzaró Agroturismo Hotel with apricots, orange blossom and crushed pistachio.

This extraordinary night of gourmet excellence reaches its crescendo with a rare chance to connect with the legend himself. Ottolenghi will be signing copies of his bestselling book, Flavour, for each guest to take home, a treasured keepsake that will forever remind them of this already unforgettable experience. The fusion of Ottolenghi’s culinary artistry with the natural beauty of the surroundings and the abundant fresh produce plucked directly from the rich red soil of the Atzaró Vegetable Garden grounds creates an atmosphere of unparalleled enchantment.

Tickets to Ottolenghi at Atzaró are 225€ per person, and include the five-course meal, drinks, live music, the Flamenco show and a signed Ottolenghi book – advance reservations necessary as this event is guaranteed to be a sellout.

Escape to an Ibiza Agroturismo

It’s official. As of July 1, 2020, Spain, and therefore Ibiza, is finally open to foreigners once again! After what seems like an eternity, our airports and marinas are welcoming holidaymakers and to those who’ve been cooped up in a grey city for the duration of the global lockdowns, the allure of the verdant countryside of Ibiza is hard to resist. What could be better than waking up every day to the sounds of birds singing and treetops rustling; to the smell of home-baked bread and freshly brewed coffee wafting through the air; to the sight of the sun casting its glow over lush, green mountains and valleys? This is what you’ll get when you stay in one of Ibiza’s best Agroturismos – rural hotels that are quite often family run, places that grow and harvest their own produce and spaces that retain the authentic charm of Ibiza’s heritage. Coinciding with the opening of the borders, the Agroturismos below have also opened their doors for the season – let the ‘new normality’ commence!

Atzaró Agroturismo Ibiza, San Lorenzo, North East

Enshrouded by the fragrant zing created by 13 hectares of the stunning orange groves, Atzaró Agroturismo Ibiza has long been a luxurious Ibiza institution. The main building – an authentic, centuries old farmhouse – has been meticulously maintained by seven generations of the same family, who grew up here before expanding into the realms of hoteliers. Each of the bedrooms are painted in crisp, contemporary white, mirroring traditional Ibiza homes across the island, while colour comes in the form of bespoke paintings and of course, the vibrant surrounding scenery. With four private swimming pools, the wholesome, farm-to-fork in-house restaurant La Veranda and , the indulgent Atzaró Spa, a stay here is a masterclass in laid-back luxe.

Agroturismo Xereca, Puig d’en Valls, Ibiza town

It’s hard to imagine that the stunning Agroturismo Xereca was once a dairy farm – wandering through its pristine gardens, reclining by its contemporary pool or practicing yoga in the Balinese-style studio on the expansive grounds is a nothing less than a five-star experience. It was brother and sister architectural duo, Maria and Jordi Carreño, who transformed their family’s ancient farm into their shared vision of a high-end boutique hotel that retained touches of its island heritage, and payed homage to its roots. The interior design is truly exquisite, offering guests a restful ambience and plenty of space to call their home away from home. The in-house restaurant fuses Mediterrranean and local dishes with an Asian touch, made with love using produce from the surrounding farmland. Just ten minutes from the buzz of Ibiza town, it’s the perfect tranquil getaway for those who want to stay close to the action.

Can Lluc, San Rafael, Centre

An absolutely stunning and authentic Ibiza Agrotusimo, that was once the family home of owner Lucas Prats’ grandparents, the 300-year-old traditional farmhouse at Can Lluc has been lovingly restored by the family to include 20 sumptuous rooms, all finished to the highest possible standards. Run alongside Lucas’ wife, Tina Soriano, the warm and welcoming service is what keeps people coming back year on year to Can Lluc – with some even going on to get married on the beautiful grounds. Considerate design means the private terrace of each room in the Ibiza Agroturismo boasts unspoilt mountain or sea views, plus privacy and space – essential as we adjust to the new normailty – while the sparking swimming pool at the front of the finca is the gem in Can Lluc’s crown.

Can Martí, San Juan, North West

As we move into this new era of travelling, holidaymakers are increasingly seeking out hotels that put sustainability and a conscious approach to business at the forefront of their brands. Can Martí, a beautiful Agroturismo tucked away in a hidden valley in San Juan, in the island’s north, is one such venue – with just eight rooms, a 100% certified organic permaculture garden, an eco-friendly freshwater swimming pool, plus a yoga platform and much more, it truly is a place for disconnection with the world, and reconnection with oneself. Set in a 400-year old finca and casitas that have been lovingly transformed into a cluster of mini-suites, it’s easy to feel at home from the minute you step through the doors here – totally immersed in nature, clean oxygen and natural beauty, it feels as though time stands still here.

Can Sastre, San Rafael, Centre

If Ibiza has an oasis at its heart, Can Sastre is where you’ll find it. This stylish and chic Agroturismo, set in the rural heartland of San Rafael, is completely unassuming from the outside – drive past farms with goats, sheep and chickens, a retro hippodrome and its horses, down a tree-lined track and through a sliding gate to reach your destination. Then once you’ve gotten out of the car and walked through a huge rustic wooden door, it’s like stepping into technicolour Oz. Tropical gardens, with tall palms swaying in the breeze, lush green lawns strung with hammocks, a fragrant citrus orchard, a sparkling aqua swimming hole surrounded by plush chill-out spaces and just four spacious and beautifully decked-out suites, spread across the grounds to give you ample personal space and plenty of privacy. While it would be easy to hole up in Can Sastre for weeks without leaving, its convenient, central location makes it easy to quickly access all corners of the island for exploration.

Can Talaias, San Carlos, North East

Agroturismos are generally associated with countryside – and indeed, this can be said about Can Talaias – but there are a few very special hotels that boast a campo setting with sea views. This hilltop haven in San Carlos is one such place – a place that was declared ‘heaven on earth’ by its founder, the late British actor Terry-Thomas, when he discovered the location back in the late 60s while riding through the countryside on horseback. Over the years, the finca has been lovingly renovated multiple times, and today it offers holidaymakers a place to stay where highly personable service (the hotel remains in Terry-Thomas’ family) complements authentic Ibiza style, healthy organic food and truly breath-taking sea views. If it’s authentic Ibiza living you seek, a stay at Can Talaias is the answer.

Cas Gasi, Santa Gertrudis, Centre

Cas Gasi is synonymous with Mediterranean luxury here in Ibiza, and the uniquely charming Agroturismo, set in the countryside just outside of Santa Gertrudis, has been attracting an eclectic mix of guests since the owners transformed what was once their family home into a hotel over 20 years ago. Margaret von Korff, the Cas Gasi matriarch, is the creative mind behind the hotel’s romantic-chic style fused with high end luxuries. Beautiful gardens, stunning art collections, an organic vegetable garden, plush suites, an intimate spa and an all-new restaurant due to be opened to the public soon all add to the Cas Gasi charm – here, once you check in, you feel as if you are part of the family, and will be welcomed back each year with open arms.

Es Cucons, Santa Agnes, Centre

There’s something so familiar about Es Cucons, the one-of-a-kind Agroturismo set in the famous Corona valley in Santa Agnes. Even if you’re a first timer, it’s the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by the family behind the hotel that makes it seem like a home away from home from the minute you first arrive. The ancient finca has been stunningly transformed into a chic haven of style thanks to the well-travelled owners’ impeccable eye for details – it’s got that authentic ‘money can’t buy’ cool factor that other hotels around the world try to replicate. With comfortable suites, a gorgeous swimming pool with countryside views, a unique wellness area built into a log cabin and a Bedouin tent for yoga, there’s something for everyone at Es Cucons – even if you’re not a guest of the hotel, the in-house restaurant welcomes visitors with prior reservations and on Saturday July 04, 2020, the hotel hosts a barbecue with live music to celebrate the dawn of the new season.

The best countryside wedding venues in Ibiza

After being locked down in our homes for many months, the thought of a Mediterranean wedding – whether you’re the bride and groom, or an invited guests – may still seems like a dream. But as lockdown laws are beginning to be lifted, thoughts of travel and celebration start to fill our minds, and experts say the late summer of 2020 may be another summer of love, thanks to increase in proposals after the crisis. If you add to that the numerous spring weddings that had to be postponed due to travel restrictions, it’s no surprise Ibiza’s best wedding venues are already inundated with enquiries for late summer and spring 2021. If you’re dreaming of campo nuptials – think long wooden tables beneath 100-year old olive trees, festooned with twinkling fairy lights as the wine flows freely and the couples dance under the stars – now’s the time to start planning to turn that dream into a reality. Atzaro Fashion Festival

FASHION FRENZY ALERT! As you read this, I will be surrounded by a gaggle of glamazon models, I’ll be knee-deep in a pile of kaftans, frantically matching the right bikini bottoms to their tops and desperately trying not to get any feather headdresses ruffled in preparation for tonight’s Atzaro Fashion Festival, where the White Ibiza Boutique will close the show – as styled by yours truly!

The whole event kicks off at 7.30pm, the second part of a two-day festival celebrating Atzaro’s 10th anniversary and honoring its long-standing love affair with fashion. The gorgeous location has played host to many a fashion shoots (including multiple ‘Ibiza Edit’ shoots for White Ibiza Boutique) and catwalk shows (including our previous Swimwear Parade, pictured), since 2004, supporting local designers and creative artists who feel and love Ibiza as much as we do.

Tonight, we’ll be showcasing a selection of summer’s finest ensembles from our 2014 collections – expect animal-printed sassy frocks, itsy bitsy teeny weeny bikinis, magnificent maxi-kaftans and some truly incredible headpieces for those Ibiza babes who want to stand out from the crowd, all set to the samba-esque beats of Ibiza resident DJ Mr Doris (Space, El Chiringuito, Beachouse and Rock Bar).

If you like what you see, be sure to come and visit our pop-up boutique in the market stall area of the famous hotel, where you can get instant fashion gratification and buy the pieces you’ve seen strutted down the runway, plus many more unique Ibiza designs, collections and brands. Post-show, this is probably where you’ll find me, slumped in a corner, exhausted after all the excitement OR chugging down a champagne or three in celebration!

In addition to our very own catwalk parade, additional presentations by Holy She, Felt By Natalie, Reina & Roses, Lez a Lez and Kurru Kurru will also be showcased on the famous Atzaro runway, accessorised with jewellery by Pure Form, make-up by Smack Ibiza and hair by Belissima Ibiza.

The other side of pop-up shops!

I for one, think a pop-up is pretty cool – a one-off event or weeklong experience that break away from the typical Ibiza shopping, dining or drinking experiences (though of course I also like those too, it’s just nice to have something new and exciting to buzz about)… and in the case of pop-up shops, they certainly inspire a type of shopping frenzy like no other (‘I must buy now! It’s not going to be here tomorrow!’).

But after taking part in the set up, running and break-down of the White Ibiza Pop-Up Boutique at the Urban in Ibiza event at Atzaro recently, I have to say, I really have a whole new admiration for the work and dedication that goes into pop-up events. My gosh… I needed to sleep for almost two days afterwards!

First, there’s the stock levels. A pop-up isn’t like a regular shop, with a storeroom out the back or the ability to order stock if it’s not available. You’ve got to practically be able to predict the future, to work out how many of each size and in each model you’ll need, without creating too much excess stock – because remember, you’ll also have to carry and load all of these in and out of your car. There are no friendly couriers to help you with boxes here!

Then there’s the layout of your space. How many railings do you have? Do all the coathangers match? Will you create sections of clothing styles, or prefer to separate stock by brand? Where is the changing area? Is there somewhere for men as well as women? Is the excess stock easily accessible? Can you keep your eye on all areas of the space to avoid theft throughout the night?

Then there’s staffing! What are the opening hours? Who will work what shift? Who is responsible for the packing up and down of everything? Who is watching the change rooms? Is anyone there to help with styling and sizing for customers? Who will be staffing the till, watching the cash and manning the credit card machine? Do you have a receipt book and a company stamp? Have you got tissue paper for wrapping, nice bags and ribbon? Company cards or flyers?

Then the day arrives. You very carefully pack your chosen collections into boxes and garment bags, carry them to your car – or in our case, multiple cars – and precariously pack it so you have just enough visibility to change lanes. Then you drive oh-so-carefully to your pop-up destination (nothing like a fender bender to ruin your mood) and basically re-run the whole situation… unpacking the boxes and garment bags and carrying them to your location.

Of course, if your pop-up involves clothing, you can guarantee they didn’t arrive to the venue in perfect, wrinkle free condition. That would just be too easy! Next up is steaming duty – which let me tell you, in the August Ibiza heat is nothing less than a JOY – to get them all hanging pristinely and looking covetable on your rails. Oh that’s right, the rails. You then spend several hours assembling the rails that were only juuuust delivered on time by Ikea.

And then the first few people start to poke their heads in. Of course, they’re always interested before you’ve made everything look beautiful, but you’re never going to turn away a customer of course. But then that sets you back and by the time you’re supposed to be open (let’s say 6pm), you’re still matching hangers to clothes and realise you haven’t taken a sip of water since 10am this morning. Argh!

But then once you’re open, you can’t leave the shop. Of course water was the one thing you forgot to pack, and you keep praying for your next minion or a faithful friend to turn up and fetch you some sustenance. Eventually they do of course, but not until you’ve practically shriveled up into a prune and want to cry. Did I mention you’ve also had absolutely ZERO sleep because you were up all night packing everything into boxes and garment bags?

AND OH GOD! YOU’VE STILL GOT TO GET CHANGED! And spruce up your hair and make-up, turning yourself into a walking, talking (and hopefully selling) advocate of your own shop.

And then the real fun starts. No really, I mean it. Real, live shoppers come in to your boutique and they ACTUALLY WANT TO BUY THINGS (I mean, you’d hope so, given the amount of weeks you spent carefully curating and promoting your collection but there’s always those first few minutes of self doubt).

And it takes all types. You get your holiday souvenir hunters (Ibiza bikini anyone?), yummy mummies (keep your eyes on the niños of course, so they don’t get grubby pawprints on your merchandise), obsessive overly cautious shoppers (who try the same item on three times, in three different sizes, go away and come back three more times before they buy) and your gaggles of girls who’ve perhaps had a few cocktails and – despite driving you slightly insane with their shrieking – are very liberal with the credit cards. The list goes on.

All of a sudden, the clock strikes 12 and your moment is over. It’s time to do it all in reverse, pack up the clothes, disassemble the rails, re-pack the car (hopefully a lot lighter this time around), clean up the space and guard the profits with your life! It’s around 5am before you get to sleep and you’re wondering to yourself if it was all worth it, when you break it down into man hours, physical exertion and planning…

But when you wake up in the morning, it already feels like it was just a dream… All you remember are the good parts (that’s after you’ve soaked those sore muscles in a tub full of Radox salts), the nice customers, the ker-ching of the till!

Which is what leads you to start planning the next one, even though you swore to yourself you’d never attempt such a thing again. Having now lived and breathed this experience myself, I know I am even more committed to attending as many pop-ups as possible! These people’s efforts need to be recognised peeps!

Including our own – which is why I hope to see all you Ibiza fashionistas at Agroturismo Atzaro this Saturday, August 24, 2013 between 6pm and midnight for the next White Ibiza Pop-Up Boutique! Showcasing the very best in Ibiza fashion, designers, brands and trends, we’ll have bikinis, party dresses, denim, casual wear, men’s fashion, shoes, beachwear, jewellery and much more – I’ll be the one pretending not to be frazzled and really in need of some water. Ahem, I mean champagne!

10 reasons not to miss Urban In Ibiza

Now I’m no art critic, but I know what I like. And what I like rolls into Ibiza once a year, like an all-singing, all-dancing… no wait. Make that an all-PAINTING art extravaganza in the form of Urban In Ibiza, an annual festival-style art event taking place in the gorgeous gardens of my favourite escapist haven, Agroturismo Atzaro.

The event takes place next Thursday evening (August 1) and for the first time ever, I’m super super amazingly BEYOND excited to tell you, that I’m going to be taking part in the proceedings.

No, I’m not going to pretend I am an artist either… but I’m proud to announce that I will be styling the White Ibiza ‘Anything But Tame’ Swimwear Parade, that will hit the catwalk as part of the urban style part of the programme. Think fabulous fringing, wild patterns, mismatched prints, tribal embellishments and edgy hardware and you’ll start to get the idea. I can’t wait! The models have been cast, the bikinis have been chosen and the props are out of this world!

But enough about me. I can guarantee to wax lyrical about that again at a later date. For now, I’ve been reminiscing about the previous year’s Urban In Ibiza events and want to share some of my favourite things with you. If you’re in Ibiza this coming Thursday, let me assure you this is THE place to be… and if you’re not there then quite frankly… I think you must be crazy!

10 reasons not to miss Urban In Ibiza!

1. You will meet the coolest folk in the world, from all walks of life! Think fashionistas, budding art critics, real art critics, artists, London trendsetters, tourists, the Euro-jet set, the local party crew, business owners, DJs, yoga teachers… you name them, they’ll be there!

2. The four Bs. Babes, boobs, bikinis… That’s right, the fashion show promises to appeal to both sexes, with hot new fashion for girls and some eye candy for the boys (let’s be honest!). And the fourth B? Banksy of course! The legendary artist exhibits his work as part of Urban In Ibiza and it’s your chance to snap up your very own piece.

3. Live graffiti. There’s a reason you don’t see this every day… because generally it’s highly illegal! But here at Urban in Ibiza, some of the world’s very finest street artists brave performance anxiety and step up to the canvas to make creations live on the night. Forget lingering around train stations for hours… Atzaro is a much nicer environment!

4. It’s a party that goes on all night long. While most events in Ibiza need to wrap up at the civilised hour of midnight, Atzaro’s extended license means this party can go on until 4am! It wouldn’t be Urban in Ibiza without a collective of cool musicians and DJs too, and this year’s line-up includes Benji Boko, MC Carpetface and DJs Samir, Yuniq, GianLuca de Tiberiis and Tony Montana.

5. It’s fun to indulge your inner art critic! Stroll around the gallery space, peruse the pieces on display and be sure to drop a few names to see if anyone around you bites for gossip. ‘Oh yes darling, last time Goldie was here I heard him telling Inkie that Banksy said something!’ If you do indeed have a real eye for art, this is also an amazing opportunity to snap up some of the finest art in the world, from renowned names to up and coming future heroes.

6. There’s an entire sk8 and street exhibition! Another sub-culture you don’t get to see much of here – unless you count the underage scruffy youth outside BFit or in Dalt Vila. Not quite the same! ‘SK8 ART ST’ is a skateboarding and street art concept at Urban In Ibiza which takes a long look at skate culture and the transformation of skate related objects and paraphernalia into functional and fine artworks. Gnarly.

7. Your little ones can get involved! Twas the night (well, day, from 2.30pm) before Urban, and all through the house, the walls remained clean because your mini-me was having a personal painting tutorial with none other than Inkie and Jim Vision at Atzaro! For just 25€ per kid (ages 6 – 14), you’ll receive a masterpiece to take home… although we can’t guarantee they won’t be gagging to mark the walls at home the next day!

8. It’s the fifth year! You can guarantee the Urban In Ibiza crew won’t let a milestone like this go past without a mega-celebration. Nuff said. Cue the champagne!

9. You can indulge in retail therapy, in more ways than one. Although investing in art can hardly be considered retail, the thrill of flashing your plastic is indeed the same, and for those with smaller budgets, a pop-up boutique offers cool urban fashion, jewellery and accessories at discounted prices!

10. You can get a room! Trust me, after four years of visiting this awesome event, it’s well worth splashing out on a boudoir at Atzaro… there’s nothing better than indulging in Atzaro’s delicious cocktails and not having to jostle with the hordes (apparently over 4000 people visit the event annually!) for a taxi, rather just sink into your big comfy bed. With another bottle of room service champagne of course!
