ARGH! It’s New Year already? AGAIN? But I feel like it was just five minutes ago I was singing karaoke in a back room at Boutique Hostal Salinas before hitting the dance floor at DC10 (both of which were unfortunately captured on video forever).
Then next thing you know, summer arrives, then it’s the closing parties and now Christmas has come and gone and boom! Here I am again, planning an outfit for DC10 on New Year’s Day (let me share some New Year fashion advice: no matter how cold it is outside, do not layer – you WILL lose multiple layers inside that club!).
But anyway, I digress. Last year, I decided to have no resolutions for the new year for a change, and it worked out pretty well for me. WITHOUT resolutions, I joined a gym, got a personal trainer, did a juice fast, learnt to speak Spanish, had a fringe cut, bought a car, explored the island more, spent more time at the beach, traveled to new locations, binge-watched every new TV show known to mankind and just generally had a load more fun.
But at the same time, I feel like it’s nice to have a resolution. Then I read a statistic (and you know Wikipedia NEVER lies) that said 88% of individuals who set New Year’s resolutions fail. Which made me determined to become one of the 12% who succeed. In order to achieve this, I need to be certain I make a resolution that can’t fail!
But what can my resolution be? To finally wear those rose glitter-covered Lady Gaga-esque heels I bought in a moment of sales weakness? To finally learn to sew so I can make all the alterations to the clothes I buy that are too big, too small, too long or too short in more sales weakness? Or should it simply be not to give in to my weakness for sales? (Like that would EVER happen.)
Could it be to write and send all the greeting cards I buy for my friends around the world, rather than letting them pile up on my desk throughout the year? To actually use all the ridiculous apps I download to my phone? To listen to the thousands of podcasts I am subscribed to? To read all the classic books I’ve always wanted to read but always been distracted by magazines before I opened them?
To sweep the excess cat hair off the landing more often? To cut sugar (oh, OK, when I say sugar you KNOW I mean Coca Cola) out of my diet?
Oh I give up. All of the things listed above are part of what makes me ME. I don’t really think giving up any of these would make me a better person (perhaps wealthier, thinner, more well-dressed, well-read and a better friend type of person… with a clean floor!).
So my New Year’s resolution for 2014 is to simply be myself. My sugar-addicted, magazine-loving, well-meaning (cat hair covered) self, complete with an overstuffed wardrobe filled with many beautiful sparkly things that ONE DAY I will eventually wear and an empty wallet. It’s worked out for me this far in life… why would I stop now (and risk becoming one of the dreaded 88%)?
