With over 30 years of island experiences under his belt, Defected Records founder and director Simon Dunmore knows a thing or two about living the Ibiza lifestyle.
As seminal house music label Defected celebrates 15 years in the tumultuous dance music industry in 2014, head honcho Simon Dunmore reflects on now and then…
“Honestly, when we first started, I didn’t see us having this kind of longevity,” says Defected boss Simon Dunmore, when asked to reflect on the label’s 15-year history. “It was a calculated risk. I wanted to be in control of my own destiny rather than work for a corporation, where you’re dictated by other people’s rules and regulations. It felt like the right time – I knew enough people in the music industry and had enough experience… If it failed, then at least it was on my own terms.”
Fast forward 15 years and the brand employs over 30 people in its East London offices alone, has a huge social media presence, runs successful parties around the world – including Defected in the House on Tuesday nights at Booom! Ibiza and programming the hot newcomer Glitterbox on Saturday nights in the same venue – and appears regularly on the main stages at major festivals around the globe. A radio show, merchandise range and video channel complement the musical releases and parties – Defected is the full package.
