The arrival of the cool season in Ibiza symbolises a shift in temperatures and tourism, but also in energy and focus. Tailoring your experience to suit your needs, interests and beliefs means you’ll get the most out of the three days – and nights, if you’re a residential guest.

Relaxed mealtimes in the company of your fellow attendees can be where the best friendships are made, over spontaneous and thought-provoking conversations, laughter and Six Senses Ibiza’s signature farm-fresh food. Dine alfresco beneath the olive trees and overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea by day, and beneath the Balearic stars by night before heading off to bed – whether that’s back home in Ibiza or to your sumptuous suite in the hotel – to dream of the ways you’ll put your newfound skills and knowledge into action.

Those attending the inaugural Alma Festival can expect to feel countless benefits from their experiences at Six Senses Ibiza, long after checking out of the resort, from improved wellbeing and elevated emotions to enhanced physical performance, newfound nutritional wisdom, fresh motivation an overall sense of balance among many others. Residential packages start at 1950€ for single occupancy while double starts at 2800€, while the limited edition island resident day passes are 295€ (for Friday and Saturday only) or 960€ for a full three-day access pass. Alma is the Spanish word for soul, and after three days of living in harmony with like-minded seekers, your soul will undoubtedly feel refreshed and revived, ready to re-enter the world.

Where to eat in Ibiza in winter

Your favourite beach restaurant has been packed away, and those famous dining destinations you visit every summer have shut up shop for six months, so where on earth does a hungry island visitor – or resident for that matter – go to eat in the off-season? The truth is, the winter is really the time that many of Ibiza’s best restaurants really come into their own. It’s the perfect time to explore the island’s inland villages and sample the many menu del días (traditional set lunch menus) on offer.

You’ll discover secret little spots in the hills for a romantic evening, snuggled up with your loved one next to a cosy fire, or the best fun and festive places to plan a big reunion dinner out with friends you haven’t seen since May. There are some wonderful places to eat in winter, whatever the occasion, and some great offers too if you know where to look. Our team of year-round island experts have done all the hard work for you – trying, testing and most importantly tasting their way around Ibiza to bring you this list of winter restaurants.

A Mi Manera, San Lorenzo, North East

For a leisurely weekend lunch or indulgent romantic dinner, the charming and intimate A Mi Manera – found on the famous San Juan restaurant road in the island’s north – is an ideal spot. The quaint and cosy interior works equally well for a group of friends celebrating, as for a couple looking for a secluded supper, thanks to the traditional farmhouse layout of the restaurant. The Mediterranean menu has a strong Italian family influence, with authentic homemade pasta and fresh garden produce from the restaurant’s own backyard farm featured in many dishes. The charcoal grill uses prime cuts of Wagyu, Kobe, and Black Angus beef, alongside mouth-watering local pluma Iberica. Open for lunch and dinner on Fridays and Saturdays, and for long lunches on Sundays complete with live music in the sun-drenched garden. Keep your eye on their social media for other special events including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve feasts.

Bambuddha, San Lorenzo, North East

The undisputed king of the San Juan restaurant road, Bambuddha has been known as an iconic summer dining destination for the past 20 years, but this winter, to the island resident’s immense pleasure, the legendary MediterrAsian temple continues serving up its signature cuisine until the end of the year. Open weekly from Wednesdays till Sundays from 7pm, island residents receive a 20% discount once you’ve sign up for their Resident Members card. On Wednesdays, it’s all about the six-course Chef’s Special for just 45€ per person, whilst Sundays play host to The Infamous Bambuddha Buffet, an all-you-can-eat feast featuring all the restaurant’s classic dishes plus some new favourites for only 35€ per person. On other nights of the week, the à la carte menu covers all your dining desires, drawing on only the finest ingredients and a healthy amount of local produce. Bambuddha is also open on Christmas and New Year’s Eve – reservations highly recommended so you can celebrate in style.

Wild Beets, Santa Gertrudis, Centre

For fad-free raw, plant-based and vegan cuisine, botanical eatery Wild Beets, in the centre of Santa Gertrudis village, covers all the bases. A popular destination for healthy eaters in the north of the island, it’s often said that you can tell when winter has arrived in Ibiza because the stylish floating fireplace is re-installed to replace the fans in the light-filled restaurant interior. The extensive menu features carefully calibrated dishes combining fresh, local and seasonal produce with nature’s healthiest ingredients, so whether popping in for a quick juice and a tofu scramble, a coffee and raw Beetroot ravioli, or settling in for a long leisurely lunch over a quinoa and hempseed Protein bowl, there is something tasty for every occasion. The regularly returning local crowd makes for a friendly vibe whatever the time of day, and children are catered for too, making this a handy pit stop after the school run or a run-around in the village playground.

Bottega Il Buco, Santa Gertrudis, Centre

For mouth-watering Italian influenced cuisine served in a cosy deli-style restaurant, head for hip rustic eatery, Bottega Il Buco in the chic village of Santa Gertrudis. The first international outpost of the acclaimed NYC restaurant brand by Donna Lennard, the Bottega Il Buco team host buzzing aperitivo sessions from Monday to Saturday throughout the winter from 5pm until 7pm, giving guests the chance to sample some of their signature ancient grain focaccia with its endless variety of toppings, along with delicious wines and bespoke cocktails. On sunny winter days, the terrace is a gorgeous spot to linger, whilst in the evenings the snug interior makes a great place to meet friends, or settle in for an early supper. The menu is inspired by local produce and ingredients, along with some hard-to-find Italian delights, which can also be bought from the store itself should you wish to recreate the Bottega Il Buco magic at home. The restaurant is also hosting a special Christmas lunch, with limited seating so reservations are essential.

La Escollera, Es Cavallet, South West

For a winter lunchtime destination with wow factor, famed island restaurant La Escollera on the rugged and deserted Es Cavallet beach is hard to beat. Often crowded with tourists in summer, as soon as October hits, this stunning unspoiled beach in the heart of the Las Salinas nature reserve is transformed into a natural paradise, enticing island residents out of their winter hibernation. The sunny and expansive La Escollera terraces boast views across the waves to Formentera and the iconic Dalt Vila, making it a stunning spot for lunch. Don’t be surprised to find the alfresco spaces full if you turn up on a sunny day without a reservation, but there’s also a huge interior, boasting those same views – also ideal for days where it’s a little chilly outside. The traditional Mediterranean menu has been passed down through generations of the owners’ family, but in recent year’s it’s also been tweaked to include some creative vegan options. Must-tries are the classic paella recipe, Black Angus sirloin and salt-baked dorada, while sushi lovers will also be impressed with the extensive options on offer. Open 365 days a year, with a friendly and fun atmosphere, La Escollera is a treat to return to again and again – no matter what the weather.

La Chickeria, Santa Gertrudis, Centre

If the thought of spit-roasted chicken or ribs makes your mouth water this winter, then look no further than La Chickeria in Santa Gertrudis – open all year round from 12.30pm until midnight. Recently opened this summer – you’ll find it next to the Spar supermarket on the main road through the village – this is the fifth eatery, from the Dutch Van’t Spit group, who have a chain of these family-friendly concept restaurants in Holland. Focusing on antibiotic-free chooks grown naturally and free-range, the 100% plant-fed chicken is then expertly roasted by ‘Spitmaster’ chefs on Spanish charcoal, using custom-made grills for that perfect smoky yet juicy barbecue flavour complete with crispy skin (everyone’s favourite part). Homemade sides of chips, corn, salads and sauces complement the package, and the whole shebang is also available for takeaway if you don’t mind the wait. With a buzzing front terrace, a cosy interior and a secret garden in the back, there’s always space for your get-togethers, catch-ups or date nights. Live music takes place in the garden on weekends, so be sure to check out La Chickeria’s social media for line-ups special events.

Ve Café, Santa Eulalia, East

When looking for a winter dining spot to settle down for a while, to catch up on some remote work, to host a meeting or just to go over the dally gossip with a friend, make a beeline for the all-new Ve Café, adjacent to W Hotel on frontline of the southern end of the promenade in Santa Eulalia. The bright and colourful seafront terrace is ideal for basking in the winter sun or keeping an eye on the kids playing on the beach, and the stylish interior features free high speed WiFi and handy power sockets for your laptop or phone – ideal for travellers and corporate nomads alike. The 100% plant-based kitchen menu offers tasty winter warmers, like sweet potato soup or roasted vegetables with tahini and lemon, alongside the restaurant’s signature staples of Buddha bowls and hummus bowls, all made with locally sourced produce and organic ingredients. Of course with so much good healthy stuff in the main courses, it’d be a sin not to linger for dessert – these indulgent delights are definitely worth saving room for. Open daily from 9am for breakfast, and until 5pm for lunch.

Passion Café, Marina Ibiza and Santa Eulalia

Healthy eating isn’t just for summer, so if you find yourself craving some serious goodness and food that sustains, make Passion Café your year-round restaurant of choice. Two of the brand’s six locations, Passion Marina and Passion Santa Eulalia remain all winter, from 9am until 5pm daily, with a fresh and hearty winter menu perfect for filling breakfasts, brunches or warming lunches. From Buddha bowls, black bean burritos and Beyond Burgers, to avocado fries and delicious dahls, the vegan and vegetarian options are second to none, although there’s also something on the menu to satisfy the carnivores in your group too. Chicken, salmon, hearty curries, deluxe burgers, steaming hot soups, keto-friendly dishes – the options are almost endless. With the island’s most extensive and creative drinks menu (from ‘trendy’ lattes and health-boosting shots to smoothies, juices and more), plus desserts that are the icing on the cake (pardon the pun), it would be easy to spend the entire day here. Both restaurants are blessed with enormous sunny terraces, so even if you might be a wearing a scarf, it’s still possible to pretend it’s summer as you sip your super greens!

Project Social, Santa Eulalia, East

When it comes to the art of a really great burger, beef, chicken, vegan or otherwise, Project Social in Santa Eulalia has pretty much reached perfection. The extensive range of toppings and fillings may take a while to sample (all the more reason to visit!), but once you’ve found your favourite, you’ll be back, like so many others in this part of the island. In winter, the friendly vibe and regular faces makes this a vibey destination whatever the time of day, and the many special offers keep Project Social affordable for locals too. From Monday to Friday, the Breakfast Club includes a coffee and a juice for 10€, with a menu packed full of everyone’s favourite morning dishes (think pancakes, avo toasts, acai bowls, full English and veggie brekkies), while the 11€ Lunch Menu features burgers, ribs or hearty salads with a choice of drinks. Everyone’s favourite Fish & Chip Fridays, and traditional Sunday Roasts with all the trimmings on the weekend give you even more reasons to spend time here, and did we mention Backgammon Club, Tequila Thursday and the nightly Hours of Happiness?

Can Mimosa, Santa Gertrudis, Centre

A good lunch in Spain always involves a menu del día, and tucked away on an unassuming side street in the village of Santa Gertrudis, you’ll find one of the island’s best at Can Mimosa.  The 200-year-old converted farmhouse has a lovely sunny courtyard perfect for whiling away the lunchtime hours, and the weekly changing menu makes the most of locally sourced seasonal produce, including ingredients plucked straight from the restaurant’s own vegetable allotment right outside the kitchen door.  A choice of three courses costs just 17.50€ and includes plenty of vegetarian or vegan options. Time-honoured dishes like chickpea broth and endive salads are served with baked dorada or vegetable cous-cous, with classic such as apple crumble or crema Catalana for desserts. Sundays in the garden are all about traditional Sunday Roasts (reportedly the very best on the island), served with Bloody Marys and a side of live music for a truly sociable way to enjoy the weekend. A New Year’s Eve feast is also in the works – the perfect place to fuel up before heading out to party.

Spa day at Atzaró Spa

For island residents, summer months are often spent working far too hard, so when winter rolls around, it’s all about indulging in some well-earned me time. Fortunately for those who live here, the luxurious spa at Atzaró Agroturísmo in the heart of the island remains seven days a week all year round, making it a heavenly spot to relax during the quieter off-season months. It’s not just for residents of course – hotel guests enjoy complimentary spa access and visitors can treat themselves to a spa day, complete with lounging around on daybeds in the lush orange groves on those beautiful sunny days and enjoying healthy cuisine from La Veranda restaurant. Walk shelter dogs at Sa Coma

Dedicating some time to charity couldn’t be easier or more rewarding than taking the dogs from local animal shelter Sa Coma out for a lovely long winter walk. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday mornings from 9am until 11.30am, volunteers are invited to just turn up whenever they can, and exercise a pooch. There’s a whole range of rescue pups housed in the centre, behind the fire station on the San Rafael highway – the turning is just opposite Hipercentro – so you’re be assigned a dog dependant on your size and experience. Then through the woods and around the surrounding footpaths, you’ll take your hound for their run of the day. The more regularly you can go, the better you’ll bond with a particular dog, and if you think you could find room for them at home, of course these are all up for adoption too. Just remember, a dog is for life – not just for Christmas.

Visit the Sa Coma website to view walking and adoption hours

Winter clubbing at Lío, HEART, Octan and DC-10

Although many winter activities seem focused on being healthy and active, this is still Ibiza, and it wouldn’t be the white isle without a little late-night naughtiness. The major super clubs have closed their doors, but weekends in winter are still buzzing, with at least three discotheques hosting events for those who aren’t ready to hang up their disco (house or techno) boots just yet. Cabaret restaurant and club Lío Ibiza remains open on Friday and Saturday nights, with parties from local promoters Game Over, Zoo Project and Ibiza Talents. The Cirque Du Soleil collaboration club HEART Ibiza also stays open weekends, with events from labels like Moon Harbour and promoters such as La Troya. Ibiza Underground has some sporadic parties planned (keep your eye on their Facebook page for details), while newcomer Octan Ibiza throws a weekly shindig on Saturday nights. On New Year’s Day, you can’t go past the legendary Circo Loco at DC-10 – plenty of opportunity to be led astray if willing.

Winter swimming at Las Salinas

It’s been a long-standing New Year’s Day island tradition that locals unite on the beach at Las Salinas at lunchtime, to plunge into the new year with a fresh and frisky dip in the Balearic Sea before heading down the road to Circo Loco at DC-10. In recent years, the the fun-loving crew behind family-owned wine store Vino & Co have turned the tradition into a more official event in the very best way possible, by very generously bringing plenty of wine, and bringing a sense of order to the thousands of people who come to the beach to participate. The team – who are no stranger to NYD dives, as it’s also a tradition in their native Holland – assemble a gathering in the centre of the nature reserve of Las Salinas, right on the beach between the now-closed beach bars of Malibu and Beso Beach, and organise swims on the hour at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm followed by a communal feast – all swimmers are invited to bring a plate to share. Swimming is optional of course, usually dependant on how much wine has been consumed!

And just like that, it was winter in Ibiza…

One minute I was on the beach in Benirras, thinking about what a glorious extended summer we were having here in Ibiza; within 12 hours, one thunderous downpour, an extreme temperature drop and the annual clock change, it seemed winter had officially arrived. Since then, I’ve had to pull out all my scarves, jumpers, coats and even Ugg boots; I’ve had to put the winter duvet on the bed; I’ve resorted to turning the heating on at night; I’ve packed away the roof terrace furnishings and the cats have started snuggling under the covers at night.

Despite the fact this dramatic overnight seasonal change has happened each and every year that I’ve lived in Ibiza, somehow it always manages to surprise me. It really is a tale of two seasons here – poor autumn and spring are always overshadowed by their more prominent siblings summer and winter. You never hear islanders declare their love for springtime like Parisians do; there’s no chance to embrace the colours of autumn the way New Yorkers do. We simply switch from summer mode to winter mode in the blink of an eye – and most of us will tell you we wouldn’t have it any other way.

The longer you live here, the more you love winter. The same goes for holidaymakers too – the more you visit in the summer, you’re eventually lured to visit in the winter and next thing you know you’re buying a house here, working remotely and living happily ever after (or so I hear anyway). Winter in Ibiza was once described by a very well-known, wise man on the island (let’s call him Mr W – no relation, in case you were wondering!) as the reward we get for surviving the summer months – and I couldn’t have said it better myself!

OK, so I can hear many people thinking what’s so good about wearing coats and Uggs while it rains? You can do that pretty much anywhere in the world right? Well, yes of course you can but the beauty of winter in Ibiza is that it just doesn’t get much worse than this! In fact, after the cold November rains we’re experiencing this week – signifying the shift from summer to winter – things generally return to sunny normality, albeit quite a few degrees colder than in the summer months but if you know where to go, you can find plenty of suntraps that make it possible to dine alfresco, eat on the beach, walk in nature and watch spectacular sunsets all year round.

What I do find weird about this instant move from high season to low season is that you don’t get any chance to ease into things. The joy of trans-seasonal layering is lost here – light cardigans and scarves are completely unnecessary. One day you’re wearing flip flops and admiring the colour of your pedicure – but the next day you’re in boots and there your feet shall remain for the next five months. You’re used to flicking your hair over your shoulders in the summer breeze like a shampoo commercial then it’s tangled up like a giant dreadlock for half a year thanks to furry collars, scarves and beanies so you resort to perma-braiding.

The environment in which you live also changes abruptly overnight. After sleeping in very little clothing for months on end, all of a sudden it’s full flannel pyjamas, socks and a cardigan by the end of the bed for those middle-of-the-night bathroom dashes. The fresh air that was once flowing through your home 24/7, when all the windows and balcony doors were open, is suddenly banished – all windows, doors and shutters are tightly sealed to avoid any of that icy humidity getting inside. You (and obviously when I say you, I really mean me) can’t even hang your clothes to dry on the roof terrace anymore unless you’re vigilant about bringing it in before the afternoon damp floats in over the airwaves.

On the flipside, it’s the same when summer comes around again. There comes a particular day when you step outside in full winter garb and sweat starts running down your spine in rivets – the next day you shimmy back into those summer dresses, let your hair flow free and make that appointment with your pedicurist, pronto! But that’s another story – for now, we’re battening down the virtual hatches, stocking up on cooking supplies, planning all the TV shows we can binge watch and feeling overjoyed that it’s dark by 6pm. Because just like that, it was winter in Ibiza – if you ask me, the most wonderful time of the year!

Things to do on a rainy day in Ibiza

While to the untrained eye (or uneducated visitor) storms may seem like a calamity, to the locals, the annual downpour is a welcome respite from the hectic pace of life; an excuse to go into semi-hibernation and exactly what our beloved island needs for a much-needed all-over cleanse and purification. However if staying holed up in a hotel isn’t your idea of a blissful Ibiza holiday, we’ve got some tips to help you make the most of an Ibiza rainy day. Umbrellas not included…

Shop till it stops: When the going gets wet, the wet go shopping… If it’s raining cats and dogs outside, but you’ve only packed the bare essentials for that sunny Ibiza autumn break promised in the brochure, you can rest assured Ibiza’s retailers are here to help from head to toe, having proudly unveiled their most recent collections recently. Switch your stilettos for sturdy-yet-sexy leather boots or a handmade one-of-a-kind leather bag by Ibiza Code then team your flirty summer dresses with staples like skinny, sassy jeans. Victoria Ibiza stocks an array of hand-dyed velvet jackets ideal for covering up in the cool, plus one-of-a-kind printed scarves well worth the trip to Santa Gertrudis. Tip – ask your hotel for an umbrella, because most of Ibiza town’s shopping ‘high street’ is not undercover. All the more reason to spend extra hours trying on new clothes!

Indulge in comfort food: Rain, hail or shine, not matter where you are in the world, you’ve got to eat! What you may not know is, although many of Ibiza’s restaurants are famous for being outdoors or on the seaside, they also boast intimate indoor settings for weather conditions just like these. Watch the waves hit Cala Jondal from the rustic interior of Yemanja, or tuck into a traditional roast at Pikes on a Sunday. For the ultimate in homely comfort, huddle by the fireplace at El Carnicero by night.

All-weather indulgences: Treat your mind, body and soul to a serious pampering session in one of Ibiza’s famous day spas – cosy, warm and tucked up in a big white fluffy robe, you’ll instantly forget the gloomy weather and relax the day away. From reviving massages and moisture-boosting facials to full body scrubs, wraps, manicures and pedicures, there’s nothing better than listening to the soothing sound of the rain to send you off to sleep while being pampered. We love taking shelter withinOpen Spa at Ibiza Gran Hotel.

Prep your home for hibernation: Those island locals getting ready for the chilly months ahead may find the rainy days perfect inspiration when it comes to giving your home a seasonal makeover. Warm, wooly throw rugs, thick fleecy blankets and plenty of cushions, lamps and candles are the quickest fix when it comes to revamping your interior for hibernation – just imagine those cosy nights in with a vino tinto and DVD! Whether you’ve got an apartment, finca or luxury villa (or for those off-season travelers who don’t mind paying excess baggage fees on the return trip!) make your way to the island’s best furniture and décor showrooms, Ibiza Interiors, Happinez Ibiza, La Vie Boheme and Es Cucons La Tienda to stockpile your winter warmers.

Hit the road: No, we don’t mean hightail it to the next ferry to Formentera… on the contrary! Just because it’s a little soggy outside doesn’t mean you can’t do a spot of sightseeing – in fact, the chance to checkout Ibiza ‘underwater’ is a pretty rare, so you may as well make the most of it. Wet weather lookouts include Sa Caleta, Cala Jondal, Cala Nova and Es Torrent for those who fancy seeing the local surfers (yes really!) in action and the lookout points of Es Mirador or Sa Talaia, where you can watch the haze settle over Es Vedra and Ibiza’s countryside. Ibiza car hire rental agencies offer all-terrain 4WD vehicles (specialising in Jeeps) perfect for the rainy conditions, so grab a map or GPS and above all, please drive safely!

Get bikini ready: It’s notoriously steamy in Ibiza after a storm has cleared, and once the burning sun has dried out the sand, the hotels have put the sunbeds back out by the pool you’ll be wanting to sunbathe in a flash. Ibiza locals have been known to sunbathe all the way up until Christmas (in the right secret, protected coves) So either before, after or in lieu of comfort eating, why not drop in to one of the island’s many yoga classes to ensure you’re looking fab, not flab, when it’s time to top up your tan? You’ll find the perfect yoga class to suit your style and level in the White Ibiza Yoga Class Calendar.

Authentic winter vibes

There are still a few insider favourites to be uncovered however – those places that truly capture the authentic spirit of Ibiza – and one of the winter’s most magical destinations is La Torre Ibiza, the beautiful boutique hostel, restaurant and sunset bar nestled on the rugged, unspoilt cliffside of Cap Negret on the island’s west coast. While its reputation as the place to be for an alternative sunset viewing experience in summer precedes it, La Torre Ibiza has in fact always been a year-round destination – something its legions of loyal fans keep close to their chest. In winter, all the action takes place within the rustic chic interior and on the beautiful protected terrace. The breathtaking Mediterranean views don’t change of course, however as anyone who has ever witnessed an Ibiza winter sunset will attest, the nightly spectacular put on by nature is amped up in the off-season, in a kaleidoscope of vibrant pinks, oranges, amber and gold, followed by deep purple as night falls. And La Torre Ibiza continues to offer front row seats to the magic each and every night of the year.

While sunset is the best-known attraction at La Torre Ibiza, the hotel and restaurant offer an array of other reasons to visit from 8am until 11pm daily – plus ultra-affordable plush beds and pillows to sleep on in those hours in between. Breakfast with a view is a wonderful reason to bound out of bed (the kitchen opens at 8am) before choosing between a healthy or hearty start to the day. Speaking of healthy, La Torre Ibiza regularly organises special wellness or fitness mornings in the winter months (advertised via their Facebook page), such as the Yoga Detox – which includes a yoga session followed by a healthy breakfast – or the Workout Brunch, which as the name suggests starts with a training session with one of the island’s premier personal trainers followed by a fresh and healthy brunch. The coastline surrounding La Torre Ibiza offers a variety of walking and hiking trails that take you through the beautiful woodlands and along the rocky shoreline. Fuel-up with breakfast and then hit the trails – or perhaps you prefer to take a hike in the morning, then settle in for a long lazy lunch afterwards. The choice is yours, and in winter, there’s no rush. Reservations are not necessary and you can simply arrive and eat when you’re ready. The ‘menu del dia’ is a long-standing Ibiza lunch tradition and La Torre Ibiza offers a daily three-course set menu for just 20€ per person on weekdays and 25€ on weekends.

It’s easy to see why many diners at La Torre Ibiza like to extend their lunch to take in those incredible early sunset views. With the sun setting at around 6pm at this time of year, the sky begins its spectacular transformation during the hours before and islanders start popping into the venue to take a seat and enjoy the show, creating a lively buzz and fun ambience. La Torre Ibiza is one of the only sunset bars and restaurants in Ibiza remaining open all year round, and from Thursday to Sunday the sunset is soundtracked by the island’s best chill out DJs (including the renowned DJ Buda on Fridays) – harking back to the original ethos of the Ibiza sunset experience. Good vibes, sensational views and amazing Balearic beats. After dark, the restaurant becomes a candlelit, romantic paradise – the perfect place to extend your sunset experience into a beautifully decadent dinner. The La Torre Ibiza kitchen remains open until 11pm, seven nights a week, offering something to suit all appetites from the delicious à la carte menu, which is a fusion of seasonal Mediterranean and Moroccan influences lovingly created by acclaimed Argentinian chef, Andres Lalla. If you’re a local and the thought of driving home after dinner doesn’t appeal to you (when that lovely bottle of vino tinto does appeal!) be sure to enquire about availability at Hostal La Torre before you arrive. Winter is the ideal time to treat yourself to a sleep-in and nice breakfast the following morning, and waking up to those views is the perfect way to start the day.

Hostal La Torre offers out-of-season holidaymakers a variety of reasons to book a winter stay. Rooms – which range from basic doubles through to deluxe and junior suites with balconies and million dollar views – are accessibly priced, and totally equipped for the chillier months with cosy heating. Regular promotions include added incentives such as complimentary Vespa hire with any two-night stay in a double room or junior suite, or a full-day of car hire. Depending on the weather, you can whizz around the island immersed in nature and with the wind in your hair, or stay tucked up as you cruise the streets. The choice is yours, and with so many fun events and activities taking place across the island, there’s no better time to visit than right now. For those Ibiza lovers in love, Valentine’s Day is already looming in the not so distant future, and a long weekend or extended stay at La Torre Ibiza makes the perfect gift. A special set Valentine’s dinner is on offer for 35€ per person, and includes an aperitif of red shrimp veloute and a cream of leek soup, followed by starters including stracciatella mousse, grilled scallop loin with lemongrass foam or crispy rolls of duck confit with pineapple. Main courses are a choice of a Japanese inspired fillet Corvina, braised Ibicenco lamb ribs or the stir-fried vegetarian Seitan with crispy vegetables. And just when you thought V.Day was sweet enough, be sure to save room for for dessert! A special accommodation deal including the menu plus breakfast the morning after will also be on offer – whether you’re on-island and looking to spoil your loved one or are visiting for the occasion and need a place to call home away from home. Keep your eyes peeled on the La Torre Ibiza website for more details. And last of all – if you’re planning a winter celebration (be it a birthday, large group dinner or special occasion), be sure to contact the La Torre Ibiza team. With the time, space and flexibility that the winter season allows, creating a personalised experience is entirely possible. All the more reason to visit La Torre Ibiza…

So this is winter…

The longer you live in Ibiza, the more you fall in love with the winter season. Fact. For most islanders, winter begins on November 2 – the day we shake off our Halloween hangovers and embrace the start of the off-season – and continues right through until Easter. The rest of the world insists it starts on December 21 if you’re north of the equator, but really, we know better. Residents often spend their summers dreaming of the winter, much to the confusion of friends and family who prefer to visit in high season, when all the restaurants and clubs are open, the sea water is warm and flights are more regular. “Isn’t it a ghost town?” they ask. “What would you even do in the winter?” is another common question. “Don’t you get bored?” Ask anyone who’s spent a winter in Ibiza about the off-season and you can brace yourself for an epic monologue as they wax lyrical about the island’s out of season delights for the next 30 minutes or so. You see, we (and when I say we, I mean me and everyone else who chooses to spend the ‘other’ half of the year on the white isle) know something other people don’t. It’s something I’m not even sure you can understand until you’ve tried it. Actually, probably not even until you’ve lived it. But I’m going to try and explain it to you anyway. Brace yourself – and don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Wait, wait, wait a minute. Hold up. Let me think this through. Maybe I shouldn’t be telling anyone anything. Maybe this knowledge should remain our (and when I say our, I mean me and… well, you know who I mean!) little secret. After all, if everyone knew about how magical Ibiza is in winter, the island could become overpopulated, turn into a year-round tourist destination and we’d lose our special winter times. That contrast of high and low season could be gone for good. But the fact is, the cat’s out of the bag when it comes to spending winters in Ibiza. You don’t need me to tell you all about it – it’s in the news, in magazines, in the Sunday papers, on the television. It’s the most wonderful time of the year… you just have to know where to look. Over the past few years, the island’s off-season population has rapidly increased as more and more people have decided to ditch the super cold climes of northern Europe for our sunny shores (once you’ve visited once in winter, it becomes a no brainer!). In response to this, more and more restaurants, shops and businesses remain open to cater to all these people, meaning there’s more to experience than ever before. Ten years ago, winter may have meant surviving on skeleton staff or being limited to just a couple of places to eat out, shop or dance – it was very much like living in a very small town – but these days, Ibiza is deservedly considered a worthy winter holiday destination.

I once read the Ibiza winter described as the reward residents got for surviving the summer and I have to agree. When you can finally let the stress and frenetic energy of summer pass and sit back and appreciate the pure beauty of where you live, it’s impossible not to feel at peace. When you finally have the luxury of time to spend with friends and realise how fortunate we are to live in a paradise that attracts so many unique personalities connected by a shared love of this little Mediterranean island, it’s so easy to be happy. Winter is not about what you can do or where you can go or who you can see. Winter in Ibiza is a feeling. For me, winter in Ibiza is like somewhere over the rainbow. So now, this is winter. It’s the contrast of blue skies and blazing sunshine by day and cosy fires and plush blankets by night, with incredible sunsets in between. When I got up this morning, there was frost covering my windows. When I got to my car at 9am, all rugged up with a scarf, beanie and ugg boots, the entire vehicle was covered in icy dew and the windows were fogged up. By the time I came out of my yoga class just one and a half hours later (because yes! I finally have time to practice again), the sun was beaming down on the island like a hot summer’s day and people were walking around in t-shirts. I even had to turn on the air conditioning as I drove to my next appointment. True story.

Now I’m back home and the sun has just set over the hills in the distance, the winter chill is already creeping in through the cracks under the doors and windows. If you live in what’s considered a ‘charming’ old building like I do, you’ve really got to be prepared for the winter. The extremely high humidity levels on the island can make your interiors Baltic if you accidentally forget to close an upstairs window (which I often do) or don’t put the draft excluders in place before dark (guilty, yet again). The single glazed windows start to frost up again come midnight, meaning you’ve got to be vigilant about closing your wooden shutters before you go to bed each night unless you want to wake up in an ice box. But for me, that’s all part of the magic. Don’t get me wrong – this is not the only way to live in Ibiza in the winter! Certainly, many people choose to live in centrally heated sleek apartments or villas where all the doors and windows are perfectly sealed, tiled floors are heated from below and towel racks make getting out of the shower a toasty warm delight. I just have a soft spot for thick socks, flannel pyjamas, oversized knitted sweaters, cosy duvets, red wine and a couple of cats to snuggle up with, not to mention the bohemian beauty of 12-foot high ceilings in a centuries-old apartment with striking art deco tiled floors I just can’t bear to hide beneath rugs for the sake of warming my feet. Call me crazy, or call me a romantic… but I wouldn’t want to spend my winters any other way.

A tale of two seasons

Ibiza is known to many as an island of two seasons. Two very, very different seasons. We have our world famous summer (which attracted upwards of seven million tourists this year – eek!), chock-full of glorious sun-drenched beach days, alfresco dining by the beach or in the country and endless nights of partying. And then there’s the not-quite-as-famous-but-slowly-gaining-notoriety ‘other’ season. Winter. Also chock-full of glorious sun-drenched beach days, alfresco dining by the beach or in the country and endless nights of partying, if you know where to look! Ed’s note: Yes, we’re very aware that spring and autumn exist in between these two seasons, however it’s just a given in Ibiza that the year is split into two, colloquially referred to as summer or winter. It is what it is. Roll with it.

As I write this blog, we’re officially entering the winter period here on the white isle. As last of the Halloween face paint is washed down the drain, we bid farewell to the summer season, say adios to traffic, to tourists, to some of the superclubs (including Space, forever – we’ll miss you!), to many popular restaurants, to some of our friends and to super busy workloads and stress. You can almost feel the island breathe a collective sigh of relief at this transitional shift – because saying goodbye doesn’t have to be sad. Right now, it simply signifies the start of a new (slightly cooler) chapter. For those islanders who’ve lived here all year round for many years, the thrill of winter arriving is like nothing else.

But for those who are embarking on their very first island winter, or for holidaymakers who’ve heard all about this magical ‘other’ season and want to make their inaugural winter expedition this year, finding your feet or knowing where to start can seem daunting. But don’t let that put you off! White Ibiza is here to help, and this week we’ll be launching an all-new winter section, showcasing the very best the white isle has to offer out of season. Sign up here to receive our weekly winter newsletter, or watch our social media feeds for more – starting from tomorrow!

From restaurants – high end, healthy, beachside and beyond – and hotels to clubs, parties, events, shopping and much, much more, we’ve made it easy for you to map out a schedule for a holiday, or plan new things to do during your valuable time off. Let me assure you – give winter in Ibiza a try and you’ll land on your feet. I remember very clearly being a very nervous little Miss W over ten years ago, making the decision to stay on my beloved island for the winter season, despite the fact many of my friends had already left and I had no job or prospects. I was just so in love with the island I couldn’t bare the thought of leaving her. Next thing you know, I had an amazing group of new friends, was constantly out and about finding amazing places I’d never heard of before (from restaurants and flea markets to waterfalls, caves and much more), had so much work I didn’t get to take any time off and voila! I never, ever left and now winter is my favourite time of the year.

Here are a few of my favourite things: the absolutely incredible winter sunsets – it’s a whole new colourful ballgame compared to the summer. Dining out on super cheap, hearty and delicious menu del dias in authentic Spanish restaurants, often outside in the sunshine – three courses and a drink for less than 15€. Embarking on new ventures – be it a health kick, Spanish lessons, redecorating the home or finally getting around to writing that book. Rifling through the weekly markets where one person’s trash is definitely another’s treasure. Traipsing across the island in the glorious sunshine, finding new pathways to new viewpoints you’ve never seen before (and where people braver than me keep swimming until January). Catching up with friends new and old at parties that still capture that bohemian spirit of Ibiza. And then there’s Christmas and New Year – the most wonderful time of the year! But more on that, later…

I’ll admit, it does get chilly at night, but it’s nothing like London or Paris or Berlin. There are outdoor heaters in bars and cosy fireplaces indoors – cocooning is all part of the winter experience. When you’re outside, you’ll need a coat and a scarf, but you most likely won’t zip up the coat or wear the scarf wrapped around your neck three times. Gloves and beanies are for sale in the high street stores here of course, but those are merely more for show, for the fashion conscious among us – you’ll spot them sweating beneath their woolly layers as they try to remain stylish and seasonal in the blazing sunlight. Ahhh, winter in Ibiza. I’m so happy you’ve arrived – I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the world right now!
