Have you seen the latest billboards springing up all over town lately, with a quirky illustration depicting the famed landscape of Dalt Vila? Every time I drive past one I get a bit of a buzz just thinking about what it is they are advertising – the return of my all-time favourite Sunday clubbing extravaganza, We Love… Sundays at Space.
Opening at 4.30 means an early start for the normally-I’m-a-night-owl Miss W, but the chance to dance in the sun on the famous Space terrace is definitely worth the lack of beauty sleep. Besides, it’s also why Valentino designed their oversized visor shades, right?
There was plenty to gawk at, fashion-wise to say the least – and I’m talking about good, bad and some very errr, shall we say interesting choices – once the club had officially thrown open its doors. From a bunch of girls in sailor’s outfits and some just-stepped-off-the-beach bikini top and shorts combo to head-to-toe designer ensembles, it was proof that anything goes and everyone is welcome at Space.
But let’s be clear – We Love… is billed as a weekly clubbing festival and no matter what you’re wearing, it is all about the music. With six rooms (dubbed ‘arenas’ for the purposes of the evening) to fill with tunes, you can always guarantee you’ll find something to suit all ears – and mine happened to be happiest in the Terraza, where the brothers Tiefschwarz had the dance floor in a frenzy, followed by Space fave Steve Lawler – the perfect mix of energy and good vibes.
Out on the sunset terrace, Balearic legend Alfredo was pulling out a combination of classics and new grooves proving why he is indeed the master of a genre he can lay claim to creating, while over in El Salon, Jonathan Grey (who you may also know as Jon Sa Trinxa) was ensuring the genre continues to thrive in his own unique fashion.
In the Discoteca – the heart of the club I think – our good friend David Philips (of Boutique Hostal Salinas) warmed up the crowd before passing the reins over to techno wonder Joris Voorn – a name you’re sure to hear plenty more of over the coming few months.
It’s always just behind the DJ booth in each room that you’ll find the island residents mingling, giving the night that added social element – it’s where many of them can finally let their hair down after a hard week of working, so it’s understandable why so many shots of hierbas are being handed around. And quite possibly could explain the headaches many are suffering today!
So you know where to find me come next Sunday…
THE GOOD: Being back in my favourite club of course – there’s something about those giant smiley faces hanging from the roof that instantly makes me feel happy every time I enter Space on a Sunday – combine that with amazing music and plenty of good friends and it’s easy to see why Miss W makes this her weekly tradition every season…
THE BAD: The addition of a new VIP are beside the Terraza DJ booth made it a bit tricky to weave and wind one’s way to the bar, however Miss W hears this was a temporary set up to accommodate the demand for the opening party and things will be back to normal next week.
THE GOSSIP: Is it true a certain We Love… DJ snuck out to his car halfway through the proceedings for a little snooze before returning to the club for round two? We hear he’d been one of the first to play, making it an ultra-long day at the office, however that really is taking the term ‘disco nap’ a bit literally!
