Ibiza weddings: Mambo Weddings – Planned to perfection

The name Mambo in Ibiza is synonymous with sunshine, sunsets, chillout and great music, with a history spanning almost three decades in delivering good vibes to Ibiza lovers from around the world. Speaking of love, there has certainly been more than one romantic proposal in the iconic sunset bar and restaurant over the years and as more and more Mambo lovers became engaged and married on the white isle, it was clear another Mambo service would be in high demand: wedding planning.

Enter Lucy Dyer, an events and hospitality expert who had relocated from the UK to Ibiza and just so happened to be working for the Mambo Group when the idea first arose. Her previous experience combined with her exceptional organisational skills and multi-lingual abilities made her the ideal person to design weddings for the company and without hesitation she took on the challenge. Mambo Weddings was unofficially born, with Lucy spearheading the original first few weddings at El Chiringuito Cala Gracioneta in 2007. Fast forward another decade and the company is a thriving business in its own right, having evolved from in-house event planners to full-scale Ibiza wedding planners, with hundreds of events planned to perfection in venues all over the island.

“Originally, we did a lot of weddings in our own venues,” explains Lucy of the expansion of Mambo Weddings. “But over the past few years, based on our reputation as wedding planners on the island, we were receiving enquiries to plan weddings in other venues. People trust the Mambo brand but often they already have another wedding venue in mind, so we have expanded our service, and our team to cater for external weddings.” The expert team plan up to 50 weddings per season, however the Mambo Weddings planning service extends well above and beyond the main event. Pre and post wedding brunches, cocktails, lunches and dinners, boat trips, concierge services, babysitting, photo booths, transport… right down to the thoughtful little extras such as leaving Ibiza-inspired gifts on your guests’ pillows in their hotels.

There’s no venue in Ibiza that Lucy and her team cannot apply their wedding planning expertise to, from charming Agroturismos and luxury boutique hotels to stylish seafront beach clubs, high-end restaurants or slick private villas and rustic restored fincas. And of course, there are the famous Mambo Group venues including the fairytale like surrounds of El Chiringuito Cala Gracioneta, bohemian bolthole La Torre Ibiza and the slightly more formal Mediterranean space Villa Mercedes among others. If you can dream it, they can bring it to life – it’s all about getting to know each couple and their tastes and desires, listening to what they truly want and always keeping the lines of communication clear and open.

“It can be extremely stressful for a couple trying to plan an Ibiza wedding if they’re not here on the island,” says Lucy knowingly. “They really have to put their trust in us and so the more available we are to them, the smoother the process can be. You’re not just planning the details of the event… you’re also managing the emotional side of things, from the brides, grooms and their mothers to bridesmaids, best friends and families.” The process begins with Skype chats and Pinterest boards, giving Lucy – who always has her finger on the pulse of new wedding trends and thrives on the challenge of creating quirky and unique events – the chance to see inside your wedding dreams and create the perfect event to suit your style and budget. “The most important thing to stress is that it is your day and we will work to decorate the event to suit your ideas.”

There are three wedding planning packages available, with fees based on the time spent planning the event, and Lucy says time frames often vary depending on the couples’ nationality – from the relaxed ambience of the Spanish, who tend to organise everything in four months to the more serious Brits who prefer to allocate around 18 months to the process. Whether you’re in a last-minute rush or want to spend the better part of two years planning, anything is possible with Mambo Weddings. “I like it when I can make things easier for people,” says Lucy. “I love being able to smooth any stress away and help create the perfect day.”

“Lucy was on top of everything,” say recently wed couple Rebecca and Larissa. “She made it smooth for us, from the ceremony, throughout the evening, managing the band and food timing, the cake and all the other details that we were not even aware of! We liked having her around – she helped calm us down with updates and updates was always calm and there when we needed her.” Cara and Tod, another happy set of Mambo newlyweds agree. “We would recommend Lucy to anyone having a wedding in Ibiza – she was amazing!” Although she has a team of experienced event managers under her wing, Lucy makes a point of attending each and every wedding to guarantee things run smoothly. “I probably don’t have to be there,” she admits. “But I always am. I like the couple to be able to look and see I’m there for back-up.”

While Mambo Weddings can create beautiful weddings to suit any brief, Lucy says her signature style is the classic bohemian chic Ibiza event. “I do love alfresco weddings in rustic fincas, with a Mediterranean feel,” she says fondly. Her own relaxed and laidback style makes her an invaluable asset to her couples, who can go about enjoying the big day without any hint of stress. “With so much experience on the island, we have a list of suppliers we trust and rely on – there’s never any question that the flowers won’t be right or the cake won’t turn up on time.” Indeed, Mambo Weddings work completely transparently with their suppliers, passing any discounts directly onto the couple and not working on a commission basis to build further on the trust-based relationship. “We purely work for the couple,” Lucy explains. “Nothing gets lost in translation or as it’s passed down the chain. Everyone always knows where they’re at with each other.”

“People mistakenly seen wedding planning as an easy job to do,” laughs Lucy, as she looks back at her ten years’ worth of weddings in Ibiza. “People will say to me ‘Oh your job so nice, it must be so fun,’ but obviously, there’s a lot more to it. They don’t see behind the scenes, all the work that goes on. But above all, we’re professional and experienced and we always want what’s best for our clients.” Having recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of her very first official wedding couple with dinner back at the scene of the event, El Chiringuito, Lucy’s string of happily married Mambo Weddings couples looks set to grow even larger in 2018. Here’s to the next ten years!
