Ibiza weddings: Selia Zingale – Capturing your story

Ibiza embodies an indefinable magic – one people can’t quite put their finger on. Some cite its inescapable magnetism; others love its diversity; many can’t get enough of its remarkable landscapes, but if there’s one element of the white isle that unites all photographers it’s the island’s incredible golden light. Around the time of sunset, Ibiza’s scenery is illuminated by an incredible iridescent glow; one that brings alive pine-clad hills and makes the surface of the sea dance enchantingly. This particular light fascinates Ibiza wedding photographer, Selia Zingale, and as a result, it’s often enmeshed in her matrimonial storytelling.

Hailing from Germany, Selia studied photography in her home country. It was there she honed her craft before moving to Ibiza in 2017 to concentrate on her passion for wedding photography full time. Now based on the island – which she considers her second home – she sets out to capture the unique romance between each pair of newlyweds while simultaneously indulging her love affair for the magical time of day Ibiza has become synonymous with. “I like to catch the light at sunset,” she explains. “It makes the pictures just that little bit more golden. In Germany it’s always raining, so I’m addicted to the sun!”

Many of Selia’s wedding shoots often put the spotlight on a Balearic-inspired colour palette of soft blues, golds and whites – one of the many factors that makes Ibiza the ideal location for her style of photography, not to mention the wide variety of couples she has the pleasure of photographing on their big day. “I get booked by lots of very different couples,” she says. “Initially we talk on Skype, or in person if they’re in Ibiza, and I like to find out how they know each other, how long they’ve been together and what their background is. It helps me to capture them if I know their story.”

Her natural curiosity and keenness to understand what makes couples tick means Selia is in high demand, particularly among those who aren’t immediately at ease with having their picture taken. “A lot of people book me when the husband-to-be isn’t comfortable in front of the camera,” she explains. “The bride-to-be often tells me that normally it’s very difficult to get their partner in the picture! But I’ve been told I’m very good at making people smile so they feel comfortable, and that really helps people to relax on the big day.”

Selia’s relaxed style also means she seamlessly blends in with the wedding party – guests often don’t realise she’s even there to work. This down to earth nature allows her to bring a certain truth to every shot, and while she’s realistic in not promising perfection, she aims to deliver something better. “Perfection isn’t real so I cannot promise that,” she says earnestly. “I can promise this is my passion and I put my heart into capturing your wedding story in a unique way.”
