There is a saying that ‘Italians do it better’, and in the case of the wedding of Manuela and Giacomo at Can Azafran in Ibiza, this couldn’t have been more appropriate! The Milan-based couple – who fell in love six years ago while still at university – had every element of their wedding perfectly planned and executed. From magazine-worthy fashion and decoration plus fun and funky transport to delicious catering and seriously impressive entertainment, these Italians did indeed do it better when it came to hosting a wedding in Ibiza.

Giacomo proposed via a grand gesture in 2016 – sending a car to collect Manuela on her birthday and take her to the glamorous Armani hotel in Milan, where he would pop the question, and of course, she would say yes. They spent the night in the very best suite in the hotel, revelling in their newly engaged bliss… and conversations quickly turned to Ibiza. “We chose Ibiza because it is such a magical place,” explains Manuela. “We visit every year and it just gives you a feeling of peace.”

Deciding on a short engagement, plans commenced almost immediately and the hunt was on to design the perfect wedding before the end of the summer season. The couple took on all the responsibilities of planning the wedding themselves, enlisting the services of Le Jour Du Oui for flowers and decoration, Food IT for catering and photographer Sofia Gomez Fonzo of Gypsy Westwood Photography to capture it all on camera. “We loved the natural style of her photographers and the way she captured the light,” says Manuela.

The couple opted for a traditional Catholic wedding ceremony, in the stunning church of San Carlos in the north. Manuela arrived in a funky red Citroen 2CV, dazzling in a tailor-made Antonio Riva dress accessorised only with diamonds – a girl’s best friend – and a fabulous pair of oversized shades. Her groom was equally as stylish, decked top to toe in Dolce & Gabbana – for a couple who live in the world’s fashion capital, you’d expect no less. Following the ceremony, Manuela and Giacomo emerged, officially as husband and wife, from the church to be doused in confetti – just the beginning of the fun and frolics that were to come.

Squeezing into the back of the 2CV, the couple stopped at a nearby beach for sunset photographs while guests continued on (in Mercedes minivans no less) to the amazing reception location: Can Azafran, a newly built private villa in the Morna Valley belonging to some close friends. Sleek, modern and all-white in appearance, it provided the perfect backdrop for a wedding celebration. Long communal tables were set up on the villa’s terraces and stretched out by the pool.

Fun mobile drink stations by MOB and a ‘Cortador de Jamon’ (traditional Spanish ham slicer) made for great talking points as guests tucked into the amazingly elaborate canapés created by chef Salvatore Teodoro and his team. Afterwards, it was time to dine under the stars, beneath beautiful strings of lights. To start, a special risotto with lobster was served up, plus a delicate sorbetto followed fresh fish fillets with vegetable gremolata and artichoke cream.

As the clock struck 12, a very special aerial performance (incorporating the hosts!) Circomentario Ibiza took place, setting the mood for the party that was to come, with music by sensational local DJ Jamie Porteous. Keeping the delicious food coming, Food IT served guests a late night selection of hot and cold sweets was served up, followed by the traditional wedding cake with fruit as the couple listened to speeches and watched a cool video projection documenting their love story. As a memento of the event, guests were gifted with customised beach towels, personal old Polaroid instant photos alongside the newlyweds plus a secret message in a bottle.

Manuela says it is near impossible to choose a highlight of the day, as the entire experience was a highlight in itself. “It was just a perfect party,” she says. “People started dancing after the first plate, even while sitting at the table!” After Ibiza, Manuela and Giacomo headed to the Yucatan Peninsula and the Rivera Maya in Mexico for their honeymoon, and were already planning their winter return to the white isle to catch the almond blossoms in full bloom on Valentine’s Day. Perhaps when it comes to love… Ibiza does it better after all!
