Ibiza SUP scene
Ibiza might be well known for a lot of things: beaches, nightlife, dance music, but one thing it’s not well known for yet is stand up paddling. Despite that there’s a relatively recent and flourishing stand up scene growing on the island, complementing the established, but little known, surf scene (yes Ibiza does occasionally get surf in winter).
Of course it makes sense that an island perched in beautiful, warm, translucent waters would have a wealth of water sports, and sailing, kayaking, windsurfing and kite surfing are all popular. Increasingly though, the unmistakable silhouette of stand up paddlers are making their way around the beaches and coves of Ibiza, and hire points and schools are springing up to support the upsurge in interest.
So what’s it like to SUP in Ibiza? Well if you really want to go for it, there is an annual round the island paddle, and if you get your timing right (think winter months) decent swells can push in and transform turquoise blue bays into steaming white capped walls of water. For the most part though, it’s relaxed flat water paddling hugging the beautiful beaches and bays that the island has to offer.
