Where worlds collide

Stylish Ibiza boutique hotel Mikasa Ibiza has elevated its culinary offering this season, introducing an all-new Levantine cuisine concept that is totally unique to Ibiza.

Just a few steps away from the glossy, bustling hub-bub of Marina Botafoch is Mikasa Ibiza – an intimate boutique hotel offering distinctly urban vibes in a central yet beachside location. The ultimate city bolthole, Mikasa Ibiza has won the hearts of many an Ibiza traveller since its inception just last season thanks to its beautifully appointed rooms, breath-taking views, friendly and warm service, plus impressive culinary offerings that have also become a favourite of clued-up island foodies.

Located on a tiny side street with valet parking to make your visit a breeze, Mikasa Ibiza was created by the dream team from Ibiza My Love – who are also behind perennial beach club favourite Beachouse Ibiza and the enchanting Finca La Plaza restaurant in Santa Gertrudis. Drawing on the group’s exceptional understanding of island hospitality and the discerning demands of global travellers and island residents alike, Mikasa Ibiza is a welcoming and relaxed space that ticks all the right boxes.

The kitchen opens from 8am, for hotel guests and drop-in visitors alike, who are also welcome to take part in the rooftop morning yoga sessions at 9am. Breakfast, brunch and lunch are offering all the way through until 7pm, so there’s no judgement on whatever time you choose to rock up to satiate your appetite after a late night out, or a long sleep-in. Guacamole on toast, avocado and poached eggs with smoked salmon, or açai and granola bowls give you a healthy and satisfying start to the day, while delicious power smoothies kick-start the recovery process. If you’re seeking a heartier lunch option, it’s hard to choose between protein salads, a salmon poke bowl, the signature juicy Mikasa Ibiza house burger and a delectable pasta vongole.

Adding further to the gastronomic appeal of Mikasa Ibiza in 2019 is the new Levantine restaurant set on the mid-level dining terrace – open from 8am nightly. This inventive concept – a cherry-picked compilation of the best of Eastern Europe and the Middle East – is set to be a stand-out dining experience on an island over-run with catch-all fusion cuisine. Here, the flavours, spices, ingredients and traditional cooking methods from Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Turkey merge seamlessly with influences from Israel and Cyprus. It’s no accident that this rainbow of culinary cultures has found its spiritual home in Ibiza, the island where everyone is welcome and cultures happily merge.

While Lebanese food has been seen in a few Ibiza eateries in recent years, the Levantine food concept at Mikasa Ibiza is an exciting elevation of this type of fayre, drawing on Lebanon’s neighbours from the part of the world coined as the ancient birthplace of modern civilisation. Each country has its own take on these traditional dishes and Mikasa Ibiza has taken these versions and spun them together in a menu that is creative and mouth-wateringly tempting. This style of cuisine invites guests to break bread together, with most dishes designed to share amongst friends. It’s almost impossible not to pick from every plate on the table, while meandering on a culinary journey through the incredible flavours and textures of this fascinating region.

The Mikasa Ibiza Levantine experience commences with small dishes of mezze for tasting and sharing as you familiarise your taste buds with the flavours of the east. Piquant tabbouleh with fresh mint, parsley, onion, lemon juice and olive oil leads you towards a smoky moutabal of aubergine and tahini. Falafel and hummus are Middle Eastern staples, while marinated prawns with garlic and coriander are the perfect introduction to the starters and mains. The spinach fattoush with pickled onions, dates and complex layers of spices is reminiscent of the type of street food you might taste while wandering through a souk, while the refreshing Greek salad with cucumber, red onion, feta, walnuts and citrus dressing is the perfect palate-cleanser.

An array of delicious fish and meat courses continue your journey through the Levant region, with so many highlights it is hard to pick just one, and so once again, Mikasa Ibiza encourages sharing amongst friends. The pan-roasted sea bass is a stand out dish, with chickpeas, pistachio, garlic and lemon enhancing but not obscuring the freshness of the fish. The spatchcock is infused with preserved lemons and served with the freshest Jerusalem artichokes, and marinated skewers of rib-eye beef are buoyed up with mango relish and a spiky jalapeño and sour cream dressing.

As you gaze out across the port and across to the sparkling lights of Dalt Vila, you can feel the shifting energy as the Ibiza night begins to come alive. When your meal is over, there’s no need to call it a night – simply ascend the stairs to the stunning rooftop terrace where you can round off your dining experience with some of the most divine handmade cocktails in Ibiza. Mikasa Ibiza’s expert mixologist, Jose Manuel Perez Virve has drawn on his travels and worldwide influences to curate a cocktail menu that is simply sublime. Whether it’s a nightcap you seek before retreating to your room at Mikasa Ibiza, or if you’re looking for a boost before you head out into the night, Jose can recommend the perfect libation to suit your tastes and mood. The perfect end, to the perfect evening…
