Beso Beach

Subtle, secluded and set just metres from the beach front, the all-new Beso Beach is the latest addition to the Formentera beach restaurant scene. Forget ritzy, overpriced, look-at-me atmospheres – this is the beach hut style place where the fun Formentera crowd come out to play. Exuding Caribbean vibes and a super laidback ambience with a sandy floor and palm-canopy roof, plus all-natural decor that really gives a feeling of being in a secret natural oasis, Beso Beach is unique in the fact it has three very separate sessions throughout the day. Big Store

Is it a store? Is it a cafe? Is it a bar? It’s Big Store, Formentera’s coolest inland hangout ideal for pre-beach breakfasts, post-beach aperitivos and some retail therapy in the boutique at the back! Set in the island’s capital, Sant Francesc, the laidback hippy-ish vibe is evident from the off, with a bunch of mismatched chairs, tables made from old doors and windows and even quirky gigantic nutella jars to sit on plus colourful signage, cool slogans and affirmations on the walls!

We loved the super-affordable breakfasts – from croissants and freshly baked brioche to boiled eggs served in teacups and hearty brekkies (‘Olympic’ sized!), big sandwiches and much, much more. Open from 9am until 3pm, then again from 8pm until 11, whether you’re popping in for a juice, milkshake or icy cold cocktail, it’s easy to find yourself right at home here…

Bike trails

At just 19 kilometres from one end of Formentera to another, escaping the peak-season road traffic and scooter chaos by hiring a bicycle (or packing your own) just makes sense! The main roads covering the island feature a network of cycle-specific ‘circuit verd’ lanes, a green track which means you don’t need to struggle with lumpy, bumpy asphalt. Continue reading

Cala Saona

Situated on the west coast of Formentera, Cala Saona is a picture perfect beach that also boasts the most stunning sunset views on the island. And with the sun setting at after 9pm every night in the peak of summer, that means even more hours to top up your tan basking in the glorious Formentera sunlight and swimming in the crystalline turquoise water!

Ca na Pepa

Clad in bright bougainvillea and offering some welcome shaded respite from the summer heat, Ca na Pepa is a famous day-to-night dining destination offering something for everyone… with a heavily Italian influence! Opening at 8am – think freshly baked pastries and aromatic coffee – for breakfast, then moving into tapas and snacks, blackboard lunch specials form midday, aperitvo from 6 and then dinner and drinks from 9pm until 2am, you’ll always be welcomed, and always leave satisfied.

Cap de Barbaria

The most famous wine export from Formentera, Cap de Barbaria is harvested from grapes grown in the tranquil vineyard in its namesake area and produced onsite. Although the vineyard itself is closed to the public, you’ll find bottles of award-winning red and white wines (made from Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignion, Merlot and Fogoneu grape varieties) available in most Formentera restaurants – it’s THE Formentera tipple of choice! You can also snap up bottles to take home from Vila Vins, just outside of Sant Francesc.

Catalina House

Forget tacky tourist mugs, towels or postcards – the best Formentera souvenirs are quirky, chic and available from cool homewares store Catalina House, or its little sister, Catalina Store. Exuding that Formentera peace, love and hippy chic vibe, we loved the woven baskets with peace signs or hearts; kitsch lobster aprons and locally made jewellery. And its not just gifts of course – for those with a more permanent base in the Balearics (or a view to ship their purchases home), Catalina House is also home to beautiful furnishings, decor and art. We love it all!

It’s Italy meets The OC with a splash of Formentera thrown in to boot.
