‘New normality’ equals more Ibiza beach dining

As the island eases into its 2020 summer season, the gastronomy scene is also opening up, with many Ibiza beach restaurants applying a slowly, slowly approach to ensure the absolute safety of their guests. Some were keen to open to residents in the previous ‘Phases’ of our de-escalation plan to come out of lockdown while others have been hedging their bets on when they’ll be able to guarantee their customers the authentic Ibiza experience they’ve come to know and love. In addition to the restaurants we shared in last week’s guide to beach dining, now most of our favourite restaurants have announced their plans to re-open in the coming weeks and some have even opened earlier than planned due to popular demand. So without any further ado, below is a comprehensive guide to opening dates and places to dine with your feet in the sand this summer in Ibiza.

Beachouse Ibiza, Playa d’en Bossa, South East

There’s going to be an all-new energy in Playa d’en Bossa this season without the buzz of the major clubs, however this could be seen as a refreshing change that brings a new type of tourism to one of Ibiza’s most stunning stretches of sand. The atmosphere will be one of laid-back luxury – long days on the beach, luxurious lunches, family friendly places to eat and enjoy – and Beachouse Ibiza will be at the very top of the must-visit list for all of the above. The Ibiza beach restaurant re-opened last weekend and offers something for everyone from 10.30am to 8pm daily. Morning yoga classes on the sand that raise money for ‘Save the Med’ charity, divine breakfasts with a view, luxe lunches, a super cool kids’ club, plus a music program from Thursday to Sunday featuring some of the island’s finest resident DJs – it might be a different Bossa to years gone by, but that doesn’t mean Ibiza’s musical heritage will be lost!

Pura Vida, Playa Niu Blau, East

The beach of Playa Niu Blau is still somewhat of an island secret. It’s a place where you can always find a place to soak up the sun, there’s no trouble parking and the shallow waters are ideal for kids. Completing the perfect beach holiday package is stylish seaside eatery Pura Vida Beach Restaurant – a stunning and stylish place to take respite from the sun for lunch, to spend a whole lazy day on the sun loungers or enjoy sundown cocktails and snacks on the terrace. Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 8pm (kitchen from 1pm to 8pm), the gorgeous frontline restaurant offers a special weekday menu for just 19€ per person, in addition to its classic Mediterranean à la carte menu and seafood specialties. Every Saturday, there’s kids’ entertainment, so parents can enjoy a luxe beach day safe in the knowledge their little ones are in good hands. Reservations highly recommended.

Aiyanna Ibiza, Cala Nova, East

There’s just one more sleep until islanders and holidaymakers can dine beneath Ibiza’s most colourful and insta-friendly umbrellas at Aiyanna Ibiza. The stunning Cala Nova beach restaurant reopens on Friday June 26, 2020, after its extended winter hibernation, from 10am until 8pm – with the kitchen open until 6pm. A new cocktail menu, the delicious modern Eastern Mediterranean influenced menu, fresh juices (with a selection available to take-away in environmentally friendly containers), boho-chic and relaxing décor, and those amazing views over the rustic shores of Cala Nova beach make it one of Ibiza’s most in-demand beach restaurants, so advanced booking is now highly recommended due to the limited new capacity.

Atzaró Chiringuito, Cala Nova, East

Cala Nova is one of Ibiza’s most rustic, unspoiled beaches and set within the sand dunes, in pride of place at the centre of the north-eastern beach, is Atzaró Chiringuito – the little sister beach shack to the famed Atzaró Beach restaurant, set higher up on the cliff. Atzaró Chiringuito will open to the public on Wednesday July 1, 2020 (with big sister restaurant due to announce its opening date soon) in line with all the new health and safety regulations we’re getting used to with the ‘new normality’. Open daily from 10am to 6pm, it’s the perfect place for delicious breakfasts, laid-back lunches, fresh juices, healthy salads, and refreshing cocktails – the authentic Ibiza beach life experience, with stunning view of the Mediterranean as your backdrop

Los Enamorados, Portinatx, North West

We’ll admit that Los Enamorados is not technically a beach restaurant, however the way it juts out over the Mediterranean Sea in Portinatx, its incredible island views and the fact that it’s just a mere three-minute walk to the beach gives it enough credence to be included in this list! The in-house dining terrace of this intimate and chic boutique hotel in the far north of Ibiza is open to the public via prior reservation and reopens on Thursday July 2, 2020. This is the kind of place where you can truly feel as if you’ve escaped the world and all its troubles – there’s nothing but peace and love emanating from the walls of this incredibly curated space. The restaurant is inspired by the hotel owners’ love of travelling and international cuisine, reflected in high-end takes on tacos, poke bowls, fresh seafood and other delectable dishes that are easy to share. The perfect place for a post-beach sunset cocktail and dinner.

Amante Ibiza, Sol d’en Serra, East

Set on the secluded cove of Sol d’en Serra on the island’s eastern coastline, the award winning Ibiza beach restaurant Amante Ibiza has been popular with island and international foodies for more than a decade. At long last, the stylish and chic restaurant will reopen on Friday July 3, 2020 for lunch and dinner, offering the perfect place to enjoy a contemporary Spanish and Italian menu with views that are unquestionably some of Ibiza’s finest. With the sparkling turquoise sea stretched out before you, it’s easy to relax into the experience, whether under the bright blue sky or a blanket of stars. Set over three levels, there’s much to see and enjoy at Amante Ibiza, from the comfy beach beds and tables in the sand on the lower level, and the shaded cocktail bar on the mid-level, to the beautiful dining terrace and lounge on the top floor. The venue’s famed yoga mornings on Wednesdays and Saturdays will return from July 8, 2020 – advance booking recommended.

El Chiringuito, Es Cavallet, South East

Without a doubt one of the island’s most iconic beach dining destinations, El Chiringuito on the shores of Es Cavallet has been missed by many, so the announcement of its imminent reopening on Saturday July 4, 2020, was much-welcomed. Whether you’re a lover of the huge daybeds on the sand, enjoy dining family-style at a big table with your nearest and dearest, or are looking for a romantic location for a beach lunch, El Chiringuito has it all. And more, of course, thanks to the world-renowned menu of modern Mediterranean fare, a fun and creative kids’ club and a daily soundtrack by the island’s best resident DJs. The opening date is already booked to capacity, so we recommend reserving fast to ensure you get a table or bed in the coming weeks – the return of this island institution has made has Ibiza lovers around the world very happy indeed.

Nassau Beach Club, Playa d’en Bossa, South East

Another island stalwart, Nassau Beach Club, has been dominating the Playa d’en Bossa beach club scene since it first opened over a decade ago. 2020 looks set to be no different, and the restaurant reopens to the public on Saturday July 4 – an Ibiza twist on Independence Day! Luxurious days are spent sipping on cocktails on the beach, with stunning views across the island of Formentera, before heading into the restaurant for a decadent lunch experience like no other. Nassau Beach Club offers a dual-menu concept, one inspired by the principles of molecular cuisine, and the other taking its cues from a fusion of Mediterranean and Asian flavours and cooking techniques. As the sun goes down, enjoy cocktails in the Nassau lounge and music from the island’s best  selectors. Open daily for lunch and dinner – reservations are essential.

Chambao, Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, Talamanca, South East

Set within the five-star luxury resort Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, Chambao brings a sense of Mediterranean authenticity to the sleek surrounds of the hotel. Offering hotel guests and members of the public the opportunity to dine with their feet in the sand beneath swaying palm trees, overlooking the beach of Talamanca and with Ibiza’s coolest kids’ club right next door (within the resort), Chambao re-opens on July 10, 2020. Known for its modern Mediterranean influenced menu, including typical Spanish rice dishes and freshly caught seafood grills, plus hearty and healthy salads and plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, most of the ingredients come directly from the best organic farms and fishermen on the island, bringing the true taste of Ibiza to your plate. Open daily for lunch and dinner – reservations recommended.

Cotton Lounge Club, Figueretas, Ibiza town

There’s a new beach restaurant player in town – almost quite literally, as Cotton Lounge Club reopens its doors on the city beach of Figueretas on July 14, 2020. The gorgeous lounge club has operated as a private dining venue in previous years, however due to the limitations placed on its sister beach club venue, Cotton Beach Club (which will remain closed until further notice), a twist of 2020 fate sees it reopen to the public as a day-to-night dining venue, complete with outdoor dining, views to Formentera and a revised cuisine concept. With more details expected to be announced within the coming days, we can tell you that the popular Cotton Weekend Champagne Lunches will be popping up on the south east coast of the island instead of the west – a change is as good as an Ibiza holiday!

Ibiza’s best beach restaurants are back!

The atmosphere in Ibiza right now is like nothing we’ve ever experienced before. Perhaps if you grew up on the island in the 60s, you may remember a time like this but for all millennials and many Gen-Xers – not to mention the thousands of expats who call Ibiza home – scenes of blissfully clean and serene beaches are completely foreign to us. We’re used to traffic in beach parking lots, jostling for a space on the sand, booking restaurant tables a week in advance and seeing the sea filled with luxury yachts. And now, well, it’s just completely the opposite. We know this time is limited and special – our first international visitors will arrive within days. With that in mind, our team of island experts have listed the best Ibiza beach restaurants open during Phase Three of the de-escalation process below. Remember, the national state of alarm will be lifted at midnight on June 21, 2020, so if you want make the most of this time and experience some true Ibiza magic, this weekend is your chance!

Cala Bonita, S’Estanyol, South East

The secluded cove of S’Estanyol, set just outside the village of Jesús, has long been considered a local’s secret though over the years and with the addition of popular beach restaurant Cala Bonita, it’s no surprise the secret got out. Right now however, the atmosphere on this little cove is reminiscent of those days gone by, when you’d trek down the long and bumpy camino to find just a few friends, acquaintances or recognisable island faces scattered about the sand or jumping off the little plank into the crystal clear sea. There’s plenty of parking, the sea is more clear than ever, and DJs are spinning laid-back Balearic beats from the terrace of Cala Bonita – the one and only restaurant in the bay, serving up a high-end grill style menu plus holiday favourites like paella and fish baked in salt. Open 1pm to 6pm daily – reservations recommended.

Cala Gracioneta Chiringuito, Cala Gracioneta, North West

You’d be hard pressed to find a cove in Ibiza with turquoise waters that match the beauty of Cala Gracioneta – this tiny west coast inlet has long been loved by locals, who’d trek over from neighbouring Cala Gracio to beat the crowds. These days, the word is out and thanks to a world-class restaurant, Cala Gracioneta Chiringuito – expertly run by the Mambo Group who know this part of the island better than anyone – the little beach is often quite busy and the wait for a table can be lengthy if you hadn’t pre-reserved. Right now however, Cala Gracioneta Chiringuito is primed and ready to welcome the island’s locals – it’s been in high demand since the very first day it reopened. All your Mediterranean favourite dishes appear on the menu, made using local produce and cooked with love, and the views are a money-can’t-buy bonus. Open daily from 9am to 5pm.

Chiringuito Blue, Santa Eulalia, East

This chic and stylish seafront eatery breathed new life into the south end of Santa Eulalia when it first opened two years ago, thanks to a creative, Mediterranean menu scattered with Middle Eastern delights. The fact that it was right on the sand with uninterrupted views out to sea didn’t hurt either! Fortunately, for island foodies, for Ibiza families and for those who love a classic beach club ambience, the Chiringuito Blue reopened its doors today, complete with its kids’ club and full decadent menu. Now open seven days a week from 12pm to 8pm, with special Family Weekend events held every Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm, reservations are recommended to ensure you score a spot, as social distancing measures are in place for the safety of all guests.

Elements Ibiza, Benirrás, North West

Beautiful Benirrás has always been a dream destination, for those seeking a taste of Ibiza’s authentic hippie soul. Even right up until the 1980s, this beach was a place where people came together as one, camped in caravans or on the sand, and danced late into the night in celebration of their freedom. Today’s version of freedom is a little more limited, we’ll admit, but there’s no denying the feeling of bohemianism when you arrive at this pebbly cove. Tastefully spread out along the right hand side of the beach is Elements Ibiza, a feet-in-the-sand beach restaurant that incorporates a juice bar, a boutique, a pizza joint, a massage and treatment room, and of course its signature Mediterranean restaurant. It’s easy to spend the day on Benirrás and visit Elements Ibiza more than once: a healthy juice on arrival, a late lunch, sunset cocktails or perhaps a massage and some retail therapy. Due to the popularity of this beach, there is limted access to Benirrás to ensure safety, so reservations are essential to guarantee access to the beach.

Experimental Beach Ibiza, Cap d’es Falco, South East

If you were to Google ‘Mediterranean chic’, there’s no doubt the results would bring up Experimental Beach Ibiza. The stylish beach club on the rocky shore of Cap d’es Falco on the island’s south east coast is part of the French-owned, world renowned Experimental Cocktail Club, and its elegant aqua and royal blue décor pays testament to the owners’ eye for style. The Ibiza outpost was the brand’s first foray into beach clubs and its popularity in high summer speaks volumes to its success – this is definitely a place you need to plan ahead and reserve, however right now residents have the pleasure of walking in and enjoying the space at their leisure. Open daily (excluding Tuesdays), it’s the quintessential European beach club experience – chic sunloungers, an amazing menu, incredible cocktails and DJs spinning tunes that keep your toes tapping all day. Sunsets here are out of this world, with the tip of Es Vedra visible in the distance.

La Escollera, Es Cavallet, South East

It was a sad day for Ibiza when La Escollera was forced to close its doors due to the lockdown – the family run Es Cavallet dining destination has been open 365 days a year for decades – but thankfully, they have had a triumphant return to form. The sun-drenched terrace with panoramic views over the sparkling Med has long been a meeting point for locals and expats of all nationalities – the warm and welcoming service, combined with amazing fresh seafood, grilled meats, sushi, paella and vegan dishes makes it an easy choice for a big group, however quiet corners can be found for those seeking romance. Now open from Thursdays through to Monday from 1pm to 6pm, reservations are essential as its loyal legion of followers are making up for lost time.

Beso Beach, Las Salinas, South East

‘No hay Verano sin Beso’ reads the Insta-ready bench seat outside Beso Beach on the iconic sands of Las Salinas. Translating to ‘there’s no summer without Beso’ (or ‘there’s no summer without a kiss’ depending on what you’re looking for!), Ibiza residents were happy when the beachfront restaurant was one of the first to open its doors when the lockdown restrictions were lifted. It felt like an omen – if we have Beso, we’ll have a summer. The sister restaurant to the iconic Formentera Beso Beach Club has been open but a mere two seasons, and is already one of the most popular restaurants on Ibiza’s most famous beach. Long and lazy lunches are the order of the day, followed by mojitos at the bar as the sun starts to set – in years gone by, this was followed by dancing but it looks like we’ll have to wait a few more weeks for that. Open from 1pm to 9.30pm.

Jockey Club, Las Salinas, South East

Those who are old enough to remember, or those who’ve done their research, will know that Jockey Club was one of the very first chiringuitos to successfully transform into what we know today as a beach club. The evolution was organic – it was never about being the biggest or attracting VIPs. The appeal of Jockey Club has always come via its people, from the family behind the brand (now run by the second generation of Lanzoni family) to the long-serving familiar-faced staff, the DJs who provide the soundtrack and the loyal customers who return year, after year, after year. Its location at the heart of the iconic Las Salinas is second to none, and its Mediterranean menu of the highest quality. Most holidaymakers can’t help but snap up some Jockey-emblazoned merchandise on their way out to commemorate such a great experience, but island residents simply tip their hats and know that they can come back whenever they like. Well, technically from Thursday through to Monday, from9.30am to 8.30pm – but you get the gist!

Yemanja, Cala Jondal, South East

Cala Jondal has always been one of Ibiza’s coolest beaches – even before the rise of mammoth beach club institution Blue Marlin. While it remains to be seen if the iconic club will reopen in 2020 (our sources suggest not), its iconic neighbour and sister restaurant, Yemanja Ibiza, is already back in business and doing what it does best – serving up traditional Ibicenco and Mediterranean fare, made from family recipes that date back decades. Situated on the pebbled part of the beach, it’s one of the few restaurants fortunate enough to be able to provide sunbeds at the moment (since they are situated on its terrace, not on public property) which means getting in early is essential if you want a luxury beach day. And without the constant throb of the music from Blue Marlin, a day at Yemanja during Phase Three feels like stepping back in time – enjoy it while it lasts!

Es Torrent, Playa de Es Torrent, South East

Ask any islander where to go in Ibiza for the best seafood lunch on the beach and the answer is a resounding Es Torrent. This old school seafood restaurant, tucked into the pine trees surrounding the tiny pebbly beach of the same name on the south east coast, opened in 1984 (just one year after Jockey Club) and was founded on the principles of good fresh food, cooked using timeless recipes and made with love, in a location that simply couldn’t be rivalled. Es Torrent has never been tempted to meddle with this winning combination – while other restaurants undergo major renovations or revamp their menus, this island stalwart remains almost the same as the day it opened. Simplicity is the key to its success, and what attracts the world’s jetset – who usually arrive by boat – to its charming, white-tableclothed tables. Of course, you don’t need to arrive by boat – right now there’s plenty of parking and all locals are welcome (as they always are). Es Torrent has always been a place where billionaires dine beside bus drivers – the very essence of the Ibiza spirit.

Bohemian beach dreams

When it comes to fashion, there is a universal belief that a little black dress can relive all your woes, take away all your troubles and generally make life great again – if only you can find it. In Ibiza, the equivalent of that dress is the search for the perfect beach day. It might not be the first thing on your mind when you wake up each morning, but it’s something you always have your eye out for, just in case you spot a place with all the right measurements – somewhere that might just fit and be ‘the one’. The 2019 relaunch of Atzaró Beach at Cala Nova means that the search is finally over, and the quintessential Ibiza beach club experience has been found.

Beach days have a certain list of requirements, not unlike the little black dress. They must be special enough to feel like you’re having a treat, but still casual enough so that you can relax and let go of your cares. They are usually best if shared with friends – the stress-relieving benefits of an afternoon of gossiping cannot be underestimated – and yet, also allow space and time for solitary reflection, getting into that good book that you’ve been dying to read, indulging in fine cuisine or best of all, completely surrendering to an utterly relaxing beach siesta. All of these requirements are flawlessly covered at Atzaró Beach, along with many more.

The new look Atzaró Beach is relaxed and calming, harking back to a more natural Ibiza era, where straw chairs and hanging rattan seats take centre stage and an organic, natural colour palette sets the scene for countless Instagram moments. Striking peacock chairs evokes the feel of the bohemian 70s, when life was much simpler, far removed from the artificiality of today. In the kids’ play area, toys are wooden and solid, while in the bar, straws are plastic-free and biodegradable. The terrace is dotted with plants and straw umbrellas, and sheltered with a vast pergola of eucalyptus, creating a dappled shade where you can go to lunch and escape the rays.

Luxe daybeds face out to sea, housing piles of plump cushions and sheltered by stone-coloured parasols, offering the idyllic vista of shimmering waters amongst the terracotta-potted palms. Start your morning with a healthy green juice or smoothie, before your first swim of the day. Then lie back and luxuriate on the thick mattresses, whilst enjoying an impeccably laid-back soundtrack curated by the Atzaró Beach team. Perhaps a massage before lunch appeals, or you feel the call to browse in the boutique. After all, a beach day is not a beach day unless you find a new treasure, perhaps a new bikini from Columbian designers Entreaguas, or a locally-designed jewel-laden kaftan for covering up later. When it’s time for lunch, the choice is yours – will you move to a sofa in the shade or find a table in the cool interior? The friendly and attentive Atzaró Beach staff are happy to serve your sunbed directly of course, if the effort to move is just too much.

In keeping with the free-and-easy vibe, the fresh, new Atzaró Beach menu features plenty of sharing plates and salads that are spot-on for that mellow beach day with friends, family and loved ones. With dishes made for socialising, you can order as much or as little as you all may desire. Choose from salads such as mouth-watering watermelon and feta cheese with figs, mint and basil, pine nuts, spouts and a Modena reduction, or go for a beautiful Buddha bowl with chickpeas and broccoli, tofu, quinoa and cucumber, topped with sunflower and pumpkin seeds and scattered with raisins. In keeping with the farm-fresh ethos of all of the portfolio of the respected Atzaró Group, ingredients are organic and are sourced from their own local farm before being delivered directly to your plate.

Vegetarians are particularly well catered for at Atzaró Beach. The quinoa, beetroot and chia burger is of special pride, with avocado, goat cheese, tomato and rocket, served with fat home-made potato fries. Although fish and meat lovers will also find things to satisfy, with traditional paella, grilled sea bass and juicy lamb chops covering all bases. It’d be hard not to be tempted by the home-made pumpkin stuffed ravioli served in ricotta cheese and tomato and fresh basil sauce. But then you’d have to save some room for dessert, that chia pudding with mango and pomegranate simply won’t eat itself. And if you’re getting the pistachio coulant with white chocolate and Garrapiñados nuts… then maybe it needs two spoons?

Obviously after that lunch, it’s nap time. Any one of the inviting corners of Atzaró Beach is open to you, but your daybed also calls, with those tempting cushions and that thick mattress. As the sun fades and evening approaches the beach enters into that magical hour of mesmerising twilight where the afternoon seems simultaneously timeless and endless, and going anywhere at all is a complete impossibility. The gently lapping waves of the Mediterranean invite an easy stroll up the beach, and maybe a freshly brewed espresso or a liquor apertivo back at the bar as the heat finally retreats from the day.

With no plans for later – one should never impose a curfew on a beach day – there’s no reason not to order a jug of sangria to share at sunset. And then maybe a quick glance at the menu for something to share? From June onwards of course the restaurant is open til 10pm, and from the first of July until midnight. In the evenings the twinkling of lights transform the Atzaró Beach terrace into a Balearic boho dream. With occasional live music and DJs such as Chino Paino and Howard Hill to serenade, the beach day extends into a romantic and memorable night. Now that really does fit perfectly.

Mediterranean purity

Everyone can conjure an azure-hued sky; and the majority can recall a turquoise-tipped wave, but after one day spent on-island, your definition of the world’s favourite colour is blown wide open. Because in fact, there are myriad versions of blue on this wind-blasted Balearic rock, and when you see it for the first time, your eyes can’t quite comprehend it. Take Atzaró Beach in Cala Nova, for example – this is a place brimming with beachside blues. Part of the esteemed Atzaró Group, Atzaró Beach is one of those rare Balearic gems that takes the raw magnificence of its setting and builds a stunning, contemporary space around it. Boasting spectacular sea views, charming white wooden furniture, and splashes of vibrant turquoise, not to mention quirky little touches like disused lobster cages, raffia parasols and ornamental fish that bump together in the breeze, it’s an authentically relaxed yet luxurious seaside space designed specifically with long, lazy lunches and laid-back, salt-kissed dinners in mind. There’s no doubt that this venue encompasses all the signature style you’ve come to love and expect from the Atzaró Group.

Situated on the island’s east coast, Cala Nova is a spot adored and adorned by locals. A long stretch of fine, golden sand, it’s the perfect location for sinking into a chair or daybed and really getting to grips with the slow, relaxed pace of Mediterranean summer life. And of course, there’s something at Atzaró Beach to keep everyone happy, every hour of every day. Here, they cater for all tastes and desires, so stop by for brunch, stay for lunch, and then don’t be surprised if it segues into a magical, starlit dinner. In keeping with the beach club’s authentic yet deluxe appeal, the Mediterranean menu is inspired by fresh, delicious ingredients, sourced locally wherever possible, and each ingredient is treated like royalty before finding its way to the plate. If you’re spending the afternoon on a decadent daybed, tuck into the mouth-watering selection of tapas, which you can pick at while you lounge or in between bouts of sun-worshipping. Crunchy king prawns with sweet and sour chilli, Iberian ham with fresh tomato bread or steamed mussels Marinera all feature.

To start, try the traditional Spanish gazpacho, the Burratina with pesto and homemade tomato jam or the beef carpaccio with rocket and parmesan – you find that the menu is simply awash with Mediterranean favourites that have been modernised with a creative twist. The main menu is divided into fish, meat, pasta and paella subsections, so there’s plenty of local flavour to sample. The bullit de peix (stewed fish with rice) is an Ibicenco speciality that must be tasted, the grilled spiny lobster from Ibiza is a luxurious treat and the sea bass with vegetables and pea puree is divine. Meat lovers will be delighted by the Atzaró Aberdeen Angus beef burger or beef tenderloin with candied shallots, while those looking for a hearty plate of food will find solace in the homemade spinach ravioli stuffed with pumpkin and ricotta, or any of the variants featured on the extensive paella menu – black rice and seafood specialities among them. The wise know to always leave room for dessert, and that should especially be the case here, where cheesecake with fruit coulis, chocolate coulant with vanilla ice cream and fruit carpaccio with caramelised cream cheese all vie for the position of best in house.

Atzaró Beach is the kind of relaxed, beachside experience that you go in search of when you’re in Ibiza. Open to everyone, and with a captivating kids’ corner to keep the little ones occupied while you relax, not to mention stunning live music played on various dates across summer, it embodies that warm, authentic welcome that you want in a home away from home. Stylish yet carefree, world-class but rooted in the island’s natural appeal, this is beachside dining at its best – not a blue mood in sight.

FlipFlop fun!

After a few hectic weeks of working like a lunatic, last week felt like the pace was finally slowing down (I’m talking about workload here, not the island, which is definitely heating up and getting super busy!) enough to let loose. Just a little. Nothing TOO crazy… but some fun in the sun was definitely in order. The occasion? FlipFlop at Atzaro Beach on Cala Nova, this summer’s hit new daytime party with a whole lotta personality. Let me elaborate…

Taking place every Wednesday from 2pm, we arrived in the blazing summer heat at around 5pm, ready for an icy cold cool-down cocktails and greeted by the sight of happy faces in colourful clothes, with plenty of kids and families soaking up the sun, dining in the Atzaro Beach restaurant and with a super inviting, relaxed ambience instantly tempting us inside.

Of course, with a name like FlipFlop, the dress code was obvious – ditching the footwear was de rigueur! The event, presented by Dutch company TYN (also known as Mynth Events), is styled by White Ibiza collaborator and super stylist herself Renu Kashyap from cool inflatable props including sea creatures, palm trees, surfboards and rock & roll guitars to larger than life flip flops (or course!), glittering disco balls and lanterns giving the venue a retro, California beach bar vibe.

But Renu’s piece de resistance had to be the awesome custom-created chandelier made entirely of – you guessed it – flip flops! A vision of blue and red hanging from the ceiling, you could understand why so many eyes were looking towards the roof when you walked in!

In addition to awesome style, delicious cocktails and yummy fingerfood snacks, FlipFlop features a pop-up boutique by Solis Lucrum – a cornucopia of colour, sparkle and retro glamour, plus gorgeous dancers (given the retro pin-up look by the Smack Ibiza hair and make-up team) and awesome music courtesy of resident DJs including Ken Abel, Cat Carpenters and Sweaterboy, with special guests like Willie Graff dropping in every week.

As the sun started to go down, the action really did start to heat up as the (super hot!) dancers took to the custom made ‘Power Showers’ for an unforgettable performance, dancing beneath the shower jets. While the ladies were ooh-ing and ahh-ing over the muscular boys, the boys were enamoured with the pin-up babes and the little ones all gagging to have their very own turn under the water.

Winding up at the civilised hour of midnight, FlipFlop has a few more weeks left of its Ibiza residency and promises to get bigger and better – with even MORE surprises up its sleeves. Remember, leave the fancy footwear at home folks!
