It’s hard to find words to describe what really happens at this Annual Payés Wine Festival, held on the village sports court in the tiny hamlet of San Mateo in the countryside of Ibiza each year. The 31st edition takes place on Saturday December 09, 2023 from 5pm, and local producers (of which there are many) bring their vinos payés to a lengthy row of tables down one side of the court, while hundreds of locals – and plenty of clued-up expats who love getting into the authentic local spirit – gather to taste, partake and nominate a winner for the year. After trying your seventh (or was that the eighth?) free tester, it becomes really quite tricky to remember which number wine is your favourite, but luckily there are plenty of locally made sobrasada and butifarra (sausages) on hand to toast over the random and quite ramshackle flaming bathtubs (yes, really!) dotted around the court to help soak up the inebriation. Then a band comes on – this year sees Guateque Scoundrels take to the stage – and everyone dances. Or falls over. No-one really knows who wins but everyone knows that a rollicking good time was had by all!
