Escape to an Ibiza Agroturismo

It’s official. As of July 1, 2020, Spain, and therefore Ibiza, is finally open to foreigners once again! After what seems like an eternity, our airports and marinas are welcoming holidaymakers and to those who’ve been cooped up in a grey city for the duration of the global lockdowns, the allure of the verdant countryside of Ibiza is hard to resist. What could be better than waking up every day to the sounds of birds singing and treetops rustling; to the smell of home-baked bread and freshly brewed coffee wafting through the air; to the sight of the sun casting its glow over lush, green mountains and valleys? This is what you’ll get when you stay in one of Ibiza’s best Agroturismos – rural hotels that are quite often family run, places that grow and harvest their own produce and spaces that retain the authentic charm of Ibiza’s heritage. Coinciding with the opening of the borders, the Agroturismos below have also opened their doors for the season – let the ‘new normality’ commence!

Atzaró Agroturismo Ibiza, San Lorenzo, North East

Enshrouded by the fragrant zing created by 13 hectares of the stunning orange groves, Atzaró Agroturismo Ibiza has long been a luxurious Ibiza institution. The main building – an authentic, centuries old farmhouse – has been meticulously maintained by seven generations of the same family, who grew up here before expanding into the realms of hoteliers. Each of the bedrooms are painted in crisp, contemporary white, mirroring traditional Ibiza homes across the island, while colour comes in the form of bespoke paintings and of course, the vibrant surrounding scenery. With four private swimming pools, the wholesome, farm-to-fork in-house restaurant La Veranda and , the indulgent Atzaró Spa, a stay here is a masterclass in laid-back luxe.

Agroturismo Xereca, Puig d’en Valls, Ibiza town

It’s hard to imagine that the stunning Agroturismo Xereca was once a dairy farm – wandering through its pristine gardens, reclining by its contemporary pool or practicing yoga in the Balinese-style studio on the expansive grounds is a nothing less than a five-star experience. It was brother and sister architectural duo, Maria and Jordi Carreño, who transformed their family’s ancient farm into their shared vision of a high-end boutique hotel that retained touches of its island heritage, and payed homage to its roots. The interior design is truly exquisite, offering guests a restful ambience and plenty of space to call their home away from home. The in-house restaurant fuses Mediterrranean and local dishes with an Asian touch, made with love using produce from the surrounding farmland. Just ten minutes from the buzz of Ibiza town, it’s the perfect tranquil getaway for those who want to stay close to the action.

Can Lluc, San Rafael, Centre

An absolutely stunning and authentic Ibiza Agrotusimo, that was once the family home of owner Lucas Prats’ grandparents, the 300-year-old traditional farmhouse at Can Lluc has been lovingly restored by the family to include 20 sumptuous rooms, all finished to the highest possible standards. Run alongside Lucas’ wife, Tina Soriano, the warm and welcoming service is what keeps people coming back year on year to Can Lluc – with some even going on to get married on the beautiful grounds. Considerate design means the private terrace of each room in the Ibiza Agroturismo boasts unspoilt mountain or sea views, plus privacy and space – essential as we adjust to the new normailty – while the sparking swimming pool at the front of the finca is the gem in Can Lluc’s crown.

Can Martí, San Juan, North West

As we move into this new era of travelling, holidaymakers are increasingly seeking out hotels that put sustainability and a conscious approach to business at the forefront of their brands. Can Martí, a beautiful Agroturismo tucked away in a hidden valley in San Juan, in the island’s north, is one such venue – with just eight rooms, a 100% certified organic permaculture garden, an eco-friendly freshwater swimming pool, plus a yoga platform and much more, it truly is a place for disconnection with the world, and reconnection with oneself. Set in a 400-year old finca and casitas that have been lovingly transformed into a cluster of mini-suites, it’s easy to feel at home from the minute you step through the doors here – totally immersed in nature, clean oxygen and natural beauty, it feels as though time stands still here.

Can Sastre, San Rafael, Centre

If Ibiza has an oasis at its heart, Can Sastre is where you’ll find it. This stylish and chic Agroturismo, set in the rural heartland of San Rafael, is completely unassuming from the outside – drive past farms with goats, sheep and chickens, a retro hippodrome and its horses, down a tree-lined track and through a sliding gate to reach your destination. Then once you’ve gotten out of the car and walked through a huge rustic wooden door, it’s like stepping into technicolour Oz. Tropical gardens, with tall palms swaying in the breeze, lush green lawns strung with hammocks, a fragrant citrus orchard, a sparkling aqua swimming hole surrounded by plush chill-out spaces and just four spacious and beautifully decked-out suites, spread across the grounds to give you ample personal space and plenty of privacy. While it would be easy to hole up in Can Sastre for weeks without leaving, its convenient, central location makes it easy to quickly access all corners of the island for exploration.

Can Talaias, San Carlos, North East

Agroturismos are generally associated with countryside – and indeed, this can be said about Can Talaias – but there are a few very special hotels that boast a campo setting with sea views. This hilltop haven in San Carlos is one such place – a place that was declared ‘heaven on earth’ by its founder, the late British actor Terry-Thomas, when he discovered the location back in the late 60s while riding through the countryside on horseback. Over the years, the finca has been lovingly renovated multiple times, and today it offers holidaymakers a place to stay where highly personable service (the hotel remains in Terry-Thomas’ family) complements authentic Ibiza style, healthy organic food and truly breath-taking sea views. If it’s authentic Ibiza living you seek, a stay at Can Talaias is the answer.

Cas Gasi, Santa Gertrudis, Centre

Cas Gasi is synonymous with Mediterranean luxury here in Ibiza, and the uniquely charming Agroturismo, set in the countryside just outside of Santa Gertrudis, has been attracting an eclectic mix of guests since the owners transformed what was once their family home into a hotel over 20 years ago. Margaret von Korff, the Cas Gasi matriarch, is the creative mind behind the hotel’s romantic-chic style fused with high end luxuries. Beautiful gardens, stunning art collections, an organic vegetable garden, plush suites, an intimate spa and an all-new restaurant due to be opened to the public soon all add to the Cas Gasi charm – here, once you check in, you feel as if you are part of the family, and will be welcomed back each year with open arms.

Es Cucons, Santa Agnes, Centre

There’s something so familiar about Es Cucons, the one-of-a-kind Agroturismo set in the famous Corona valley in Santa Agnes. Even if you’re a first timer, it’s the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by the family behind the hotel that makes it seem like a home away from home from the minute you first arrive. The ancient finca has been stunningly transformed into a chic haven of style thanks to the well-travelled owners’ impeccable eye for details – it’s got that authentic ‘money can’t buy’ cool factor that other hotels around the world try to replicate. With comfortable suites, a gorgeous swimming pool with countryside views, a unique wellness area built into a log cabin and a Bedouin tent for yoga, there’s something for everyone at Es Cucons – even if you’re not a guest of the hotel, the in-house restaurant welcomes visitors with prior reservations and on Saturday July 04, 2020, the hotel hosts a barbecue with live music to celebrate the dawn of the new season.

The most romantic hotels in Ibiza

For most of us finding love can be a big enough chore in itself, let alone trying to keep that love alive for any length of time. Thankfully that’s when Ibiza can safely come to the rescue and do what it does best. Even the hardest of hearts cannot fail to be touched by a shared romantic sunset shared or a lazy leisurely day together by the side of a shimmering swimming pool. Away from the bustle and stress of everyday life, lovers can find their private world again, and reconnect over cocktails, a secluded dinner, or a walk in the countryside – alone and yet together at last. Some of the best hotels in Ibiza have offer the perfect couples’ escapes, with attention to the smallest of details and care in providing discretion and privacy so that your holiday for two can be a fairy-tale all of your own.

Es Cucons, Santa Ines, North West

With its white-washed walls and traditionally built-in shelves and beds, the rooms at Es Cucons, in the charming Santa Ines valley in north west of Ibiza are straight from a whimsical fairy-tale. Painted wooden shutters, or half-stable doors all add to the romanticism of this gorgeous and tranquil Agroturismo, which is truly nestled in nature settled amongst acres of almond trees and pine forest. Around the green lawn surrounding the swimming pool, discretely curtained daybeds shelter lovers from prying eyes, whilst the intimate spa to the rear of the hotel is a dreamy place for a couple’s massage, a sauna or a dip in the plunge pool to admire the valley together at sunset. The garden restaurant provides countless candlelit corners for a dinner for two, so there’ll be little reason to leave your love bubble once you arrive.

Cas Gasi, Santa Gertrudis, Centre

Described by one magazine reviewer as feeling like a friend’s stylish hacienda, luxurious boutique hotel Can Gasi remains one of Ibiza’s best kept secrets despite its 20-year history on the island. Wonderfully discreet and private, the 12 unique rooms and suites – set in the heart of the countryside near Santa Gertrudis – feature living areas, Moroccan themed lounges or their own libraries, adding to the overall sense of staying in a secluded – and extremely decadent – family home. Owner Margaret Von Korff personally oversees every little detail, from the interior design and imported Italian linens on the feather-topped beds, to the hydro-massage baths in the Deluxe Suite, and the creative seasonal menu served in the intimate restaurant. For a romantic escape for two, cocooned in nature and divine indulgence, Can Gasi is the perfect place to create your holiday love nest. Truly the hotel for lovers.

Can Martí, San Juan, North East

Eco-conscious lovers head into the wilderness for a romantic retreat at sustainable Agroturismo Can Martí. Nestled in its own magical valley not far from the bohemian village of San Juan in Ibiza’s north, the family-run finca has an agricultural history dating back over 400 years and has been loving renovated in a traditional and environmentally friendly way. A natural and chemical-free swimming pool is kept clean with lava stone filters and an oxygenating waterfall, while fresh organic produce is available from the farm for you eat under the stars or to prepare in your own kitchen if you prefer. From yoga in nature, to a massage under a pergola, if your vision of romance involves the soothing flutter of dragonflies and the sweet chirping of birds, then Can Marti is your dream come true.

Ca Na Xica, San Miguel, North West

Sleek and stylish, rural hotel and spa Ca Na Xica is a spot for lovers to be wooed by luxury. The countryside estate, on the outskirts of San Miguel, boasts 14 recently built premier suites, with private terraces, unspoilt views across the campo, plush two-metre wide beds, and every little luxe mod con that could be considered, from bluetooth soundbars to LED mood lighting. Your romantic escape might be rural, but with award-winning restaurant Salvia right on site, and a choice of professional therapists on offer for massages and more, there’s nothing rustic about a stay at this stunning location. Surrounded by carefully tended gardens of fragrant lavender and colourful flowers, the peace and tranquility of this oasis for lovers is a luxury everyone deserves to be spoilt with.

Can Talaias, San Carlos, North East

To truly escape into a romantic bubble for two, mountain-top finca and Agroturismo Can Talaias feels like it’s on top of the world, with breath-taking panoramic views stretching far out to sea, and overlooking the village of San Carlos in the far north of the island. Originally the island bolthole of iconic British actor Terry Thomas and his wife Belinda, the hotel is now owned and managed by his son Cushan and partner Laetitia, who have created a relaxed and friendly home-away-from-home for guests in any of their eight individually styled rooms or suites. Carefully and lovingly restored over the years into a spacious and spread-out estate, the old farmhouse trademarks of terracotta tiles and exposed stone walls evoke a calming sense of history, whilst the epic vistas from your own private terrace cannot fail to impress and awe. Love at first sight indeed.

Agroturismo Xereca, Puig d’en Valls, Ibiza town

A firm favourite for island nuptials, Agroturismo Xereca, tucked into a valley close to Ibiza town, is also home to one of the island’s last surviving windmills. Now converted into a very romantic and private poolside luxury shower, the intimate boutique hotel is packed full of charming original features like this, making it a joy to discover for adventurous lovers. The close proximity to the island’s main city makes this a great choice for those who love both worlds; find romance over dinner or wandering the old streets of Dalt Vila, before returning to your countryside retreat just a few minutes away. Brother and sister architectural team Maria and Jordi Carreño have created a calming blend of traditional features mixed with minimalist design, sure to guarantee a restful stay with the sweet dreams all round.

Come one, come all…

With just eight rooms in total, the space has an authentic home away from home feel. Think Goldilocks and the three bears – once you’ve checked in, everything is j-u-u-s-t right. You won’t hear the sound of cars within this heavenly getaway, though surprisingly, it’s conveniently located to some impressive beaches and popular, bustling villages. Nothing but love and laughter echoes through the shared spaces at Can Talaias – in fact, you’d be hard-pressed to hear anything aside from the rustle of trees and tweets of the birds. Can Talaias was originally the home of famed British actor Terry-Thomas in the late 60s, however in recent years, the property has been successfully run by his son Cushan and wife Laetitia, who carried the family legacy on in true Ibiza style. With two young children of their own, the couple possesses an intuitive understanding for the needs of families when staying in their hotel.

At Can Talaias, kids are surrounded by lifetime memories in the making – fun times by the pool with family and newfound friends, days spent frolicking in the countryside with the friendly pet dogs and cat (who also happens to go on walks with her canine pals!), or admiring the flock or peacocks in pens, and feeding gorgeous pot-bellied pigs in the paddock. A special kids’ corner filled with games, books and toys awaits, alongside an all-new cubby house and trampoline outdoors. There are two suites and a superior room ideal for families who want a little extra space between mum, dad and the kids. Cots and highchairs are available on request and of course, grandma and grandpa are also welcome to stay in the rooms next door. A live-in babysitter – who also happens to be a qualified masseur – is on hand to take care of the little ones when parents need a break, be it for a beach day, romantic date or party night.

Kids are well catered to on the hotel menu – going above and beyond the standard options of chips and rice for your mini-me. Laetitia and Cushan understand the need for nutrition, particularly difficult when on holiday, and so their organic kitchen is on hand to heat up veggies for bubs or whip up a healthy kids’ meal when needed. For families with toddlers or babies, the location is ideal as a trip to the beach is just a few minutes drive down the road, taking away any stress about packing up the car, travelling, finding parking and then the drama if you need to return home quickly. Cala Boix and Pou des Lleo are at the end of Can Talaias’s road, boasting soft golden sand and shallow waters perfect for children. The beautiful crystalline waters of Aguas Blancas, and the gentle waves of Cala Nova (the home of Atzaró Beach restaurant and beach club) are also nearby. Alternatively, kids can play in the children’s section of the hotel pool – separated from the deeper section by a giant stone for safety.

The beauty of Can Talaias is that it offers something for everyone. Lovers of health and fitness can check into the beautiful Agroturismo and enjoy yoga or personal training sessions on the lush green lawn, long hikes into the hills to take in some simply breathtaking views at all times of the day or extensive walks to beaches and nearby villages. Sunrise, early mornings, afternoons, the colourful sunset hours or magical moonrise – no matter how often you take the trails, it is impossible to get bored. Massages are also available – amongst nature or in the comfort of your suite – when you need to sooth sore muscles, and the experienced chef plucks fresh and organic produce from his own garden, and sources other local ingredients, in order to create healthy and nutritious meals. Can Talaias has also long been popular with creatives – harking back to its heritage, perhaps – with writers, painters and other artists often checking in to use the space to finish their masterpieces. There’s almost an unwritten rule among guests – live and let live. While there are no communal tables, many guests often end up socialising by choice and becoming friends, and for the more solitary types, there are many comfortable chilled corners to indulge in that much needed ‘me-time’. And for those seeking some authentic Ibiza retail therapy, the iconic Las Dalias hippy market is in close vicinity – just a few minutes drive, or an enjoyable 45-minute walk through a secret back route directly from the hotel.

There’s also no denying Can Talaias is an incredibly romantic setting, which makes it popular with holidaying couples and honeymooners alike. Whether it’s taking in an amazing sunrise, magical sunset or mystical moonrise, the views are almost heaven sent. Candlelit dinners for two on the terrace, couples’ massages and the perfect central location to explore the romantic terrain of the north, it is a lovers’ paradise. Speaking of love, weddings can also be accommodated at Can Talaias if guests secure the eight suites for a minimum stay to ensure exclusivity. Imagine, making this your home base as you prepare for your big day with your nearest and dearest. Think close-knit dinners, pre-wedding cocktails, post-wedding brunches and farewell sunset cocktails – not to mention the wedding of your dreams, of course!

Life simply flows at Can Talaias. For every different type of guest, there is a different daily itinerary. By the time families have finished their breakfast and are moving onto the pool area, newlyweds are arising late and can enjoy the terrace to themselves, or alongside tranquil health fanatics, who are enjoying a healthy brunch after morning yoga and a swim. Later on, as the families pack up and head out for a day of adventures, couples and singles can soak up the sun by the pool. There’s something about the laidback, effortless chic of Can Talaias that means everything just falls into place, from morning until night. There’s no greater time to experience Ibiza than the gorgeous springtime, when Can Talaias really comes into its own, in living colour with lush green grass, colourful flowers and majestic skies. Opening on April 6, 2017, early bird guests receive a special discount of 10-percent for three-day stays in April or 15-percent off five-day bookings. In May, reservations for five nights or more will be given a 10-percent discount and for extended stays, even bigger discounts can be applied – contact the hotel directly for more information and be sure to reserve soon to guarantee your space.
